Hi,

I am new to this forum, but I would like to introduce myself. My name is Debbie, and all of a sudden I have found I am a vacuum nut.

How did this come to pass? I have always been facinated with appliances, mainly fans for years. I have always loved the "chore" of vacumming. I even asked my mother the other day how I was w/ the vacuum, and she said I always insisted on vacuuming my own room. I also asked her what vacuums she used/preferred, and she replied, "We always had Hoovers."

Anyhow, I recently discovered your siteclub and I love what I have found...I wasn't a vac collector a few weeks ago. I had an Electrolux Ultralux Classic that a friend had lent me for a long term period. Basically, it was broken, and I had it repaired, with the promise I could keep her for how ever long I wished.

Well, that friend and I had a falling out, and I relinquished the Electrolux, but not before becoming so attached to it and it's cleaning ability.

I posted an advert on Craigslist seeking an electrolux replacement. I soon heard back from a fellow who worked for Kirby as a service tech and received trade-ins on a daily basis. I purchased from him, all the above electroluxes (sans 1 Super J that I had an eBay bid on prior), attachments, and portable vac called little lux.

Decided to google Electrolux Vacuums and repair info, found you folks, read forums, for days and days, now I am hooked. Thanks! I have learned so much, and now am on the hunt as a collector!

Thanks for the warm welcome. Looks like a great group. You all have very impressive vacuum collections by the way. I am not sure how large my collection will become, but I can see how this could become addicting.

I did some thrifting yesterday, but no luck. Saw a regina sweeper stick vac and a sad looking Eureka Dial A Nap that had a pen stuck through the bottom part of the handle and underneath it was missing the brush roller. I passed on that, not really what I am looking for and was too rough even at 7 dollars.

There's a great vacuum shop out here by me in Allentown, they have been in business I beleive for 40 years. I checked there too, but they had newer vacs and they are a little pricey on their used anyhow, but they are a great friendly shop and very knowledgable. They sell Miele which looks like a nice vac as far as modern goes, very quiet. But out of my range $$$$ wise.

Anyhow, I am looking forward to learning more about vacuums, and chatting about them too.

Electrogirl, is that shop in a brick rowhouse off Tilghman Street? I went to Allentown in July '97 with a friend from there, we passed it and I would have gone in, but he was always busting me for some of the things I like.

Hi arh 1953,

No this Vacuum shop is located on 7th street just south of Hamilton St (which is the main rd downtown). It is called Dave's Vacuum. It is in a row of older buildings. I have a link below to their website.

There was also a Vacuum store across the same street down the road, I think that was called Hirsch Vacuum, another store that looked very old, but alas, I never went in there and they closed up about a year or two ago. Thet were selling off all their stuff too, I remember they had some old Kirbys im their window. That store from the outside looked real old and dusty.

I am not sure if there is one on Tilghman, if there is I never noticed it, I will have to research further. There is a vacuum shop in the Allentown farmer's market, I will check that out soon, and report back. I do recall they had several used Electroluxes.

And lastly there is a vacuum store in the Quakertown farmer's market, I did browse in there over the weekend, the lady seemed a bit crabby, and she had some old luxes, but they were in poor shape from a collector's stand point plus she wanted too much money for them (ie..a Super J canister for 155.00, and that was for JUST the canister, no hoses or attachments). She was asking 59.95 for a used hose. I could do better on ebay for a new one.

Hi Debbie!

Nice to have you here! And is the Quakertown farmer's market the only farmer's market in your general area that has a vacuum shop? When I visited my aunt and uncle in New Jersey a few years ago, I got several things, including some bags and some manuals for some different vacuums. There were 3 men working there, and the store itself was in the middle between the two isles. I remember seeing an Electrolux model 30 out on display. Anyways...I was just wondering. Thanks again, and it's nice to have you here!

~~K~~

This store would have been off Tilghman, but I may well be wrong about that. I'd bet Dave's is the place I'm thinking about. It's in an old brick rowhouse.

Hi vacuumkid3,

There is another vacuum shop in the Allentown Farmer's Market. Both are in the middle between two aisles. Small little shops packed with stuff.

Arh1953,

You might very well be thinking of Dave's. His shop is in a brick row house. His showroom is in the front, and the back of the store is their service deptsales counter. They have the used vacs in back and the bags and accessories on the wall. I will see if they let me take some pictures and I can post them here if you like.

Getting pictures of the shop

Thanks, Debbie, and if they don't, I'm sure they couldn't object to outside photographs. At the time I was there, I wasn't collecting, but had retained my childhood fascination of vacuum cleaners. The reason my friend and I ended up in Allentown was because on our way to Maryland, he wanted to see his parent's graves. I liked Allentown, just for the record.

Hi debbie its the Kirby service manager you got the electrolux from... Had your J in for about an hour the other day (owner wanted it back) but I will keep watching for one let you know. Side note daves vac is on 7th, but 7th and tilghman are the same street.
