I just purchased an older Electrolux on Ebay. The gentlemen I purchased it from said he purchased it from an estate sale and it looked as it had never been used - still in the original foot box. He did try it and said it worked like brand new - I think his words were "It has some serious suction and runs very smooth. Now I just need to know what model it is. Your help would be greatly appreciated. And if you can tell if the parts look original that would be great too.

and one of the power tool out of box

Also if you can tell me what motor was in this model and what your opinion would be of that motor. I know most people hate the Diamond J motor, but say the Super J is the best with Olympia close behind.

This is a model E that was manufactured in 1954. Somewhere along the line someone adapted a cordwinder from a model AE (1956) onto it, from the factory this was known as the "worlds lightest weight heavy duty" vacuum cleaner, it came with a halo on the back to wind the cord to cut both costs and weight on the machine. It looks like it could have been refurbished at some point since there is a TK2 turbo power nozzle on it and a crevice tool, the model E did not come with a crevice tool, it was optional. The hose of course was changed at some point, the original hose was a cloth woven hose in a blue/grey herringbone pattern. Hope this helps. BTW it looks like it is in nice condition.

SO I've done some research because I thought it was between the model E or the model L. I think it is definitely a model E Turquoise with a cord rewinder due to the look of the wheels. It has three. So what do you think and what motor was in the E?

Hi mj! Yes, that's definately a Model E. The rug/ floor tool and combination dusting/ upholstery tool are both original, I believe, and though the crevice tool was optional, I think it's the one sold for it as well. The hose has been redone, of course, but I'm pretty sure those are the original ends with a new piece of hose between them, because the Model E was the only Lux hose with a painted machine end, which yours has. As for the motors, others will know better than me, but I've seen many Es over the years, and the motors seem to have a long life if not horribly abused. Enjoy your Lux, Trg

Model E!

caligula's profile picture
This vacuum cleaner is a model E. A previous post is partially correct, there was a 'halo' on the back to wrap the cord. However, this cord winder IS original! Back then it was sold as an optional acessory. The combination floor/rug tool, combination dust brush/upholstry tool, crevice tool and wands are also original. As for the sprayer, and vaporizor, they are from a model XXX. When the LX was introduced in 1952, the sprayer was given a black bakalite top and vaporizor was changed to the same hammertone blue/gray. As for the hose, it's NOT original, I'd say sometime in the 1980's. The original hose was a braided fabric over a rubber base, the same color as the machine. As for the bags, they are most likely 1956, as this model still used the same blue/gray as with the model LX, LXI, (1952/53.) At the time Electrolux called them 'wrappers.' Looks like the box is also original. Models V, XI, XII, XXX, XX, LX, and E, all offered storage cases as an optional accessory. Most people didn't buy the storage box, and kept the machine and tools in a closet. The turbo brush, is not original, and like the hose is about mid 1980.

Looks like you got a very sweet deal.

Hose not original.

caligula's profile picture
As I said, the hose is not original, but the ends are. I took a closer look at the box, and it is most likely not original! This machine is not an automatic, the automatic E (AE) was introduced in 1956, this would be the lower end model which was sold with the model LXI. It would have replaced the model XXX. As for the motor, I think it was the same one as the models XXX and LX.

Sandwiched in between the model XXX and the LX, was the XX, though it had a very short run. The model E was followed with the T, better known as the 'thrift' model, because it was made of excess parts at the factory. It was truly a frankenstein monster, and was really ugly!

As I said, you have a really sweet Electrolux,

Enjoy!

Electrolux E

All good information above.E was he first with wheels and I have been told that many sales were preferential as they sold faster than they could build them.A customer would make a down payment and the machine would be delivered from the next shipmemt. The earliest Es had 2 screws at switch, later 1.The box was often labeled for Leywt vacs and available with no name to store vac, toys, blankets, etc. The E had no spring lock on rug/floor elbo and no suction adjuster on hose end.The Automatic E had both. The rubber handle will have an 'E' and this one is the E.Later models kept the E on handle but were newer models sometimes causing a bit of confusion. These were also the great original Elux motor(can sometimes have metal fatigue cracks on fans after high milage).Looks like it will be a great vac.Enjoy.

The model LXI had wheels--sort of!

caligula's profile picture
As any Electrolux historian knows, the model LXI had wheels. There were two types, the optional wheels that fit on the back of the runners (under the cord winder) and the swivel caster that replaced the tube thingy that held the spare wrappers (bags.) When the last of the model LXI's were manufactured, these wheels were no longer optional. A few months later the model E was introduced, and from then on, wheels were standard.

The Electrolux LX that I have, has the detachable wheels on the back runners, and it's easy to 'steer' by lifting up on the hose, and letting the wheels manuver the machine. As for the swivel caster, I opted to stay with the bag holder.

While the LX, and LXI were wonderful vacuum cleaners, they were quite heavy, especially when there was the companion, (tool holder) cord-winder, and all the tools in place. As for carrying this beast, it's 25 lbs, (ugh!) I like to hold it by the runners. There's no doubt that the models E, and E automatic are as good, and certainly lighter. In addition, the new 'combination' tools made cleaning a breeze. For me, it's a matter of personal like and dislike. Heavy, bulky, akward and combersome as it is, it's the only Electrolux that tosses out the wrapper. (I've seen it fly across the roon a good 20 feet) and as that was what started my interest in vacuum cleaners, nothing else comes close!

As I said, this is a matter of preferance.

Alex.

I'm really curious about that turbine nozzle that came with your Electrolux. For whatever reason, I think "Nutone" when I see it, but I can't find any documentation to back it up. I've seen it somewhere, but I don't know where. Do you have any information on it?

It is so great you got a decent hose with that Lux, and with original wands as well. A fantastic find.

More on E

Wheels-I should have said first starting with wheels as the LX-LXI started with runners and was adapted to combination of wheels and runners because of weight.Weight-The E was known for light weight as mentioned above and many ads aimed at the baby boom housewife compared the E as being same weight as newborn baby.Cordwinder-This is wired in unlike later plug in cords probably showing that it came from factory or at least branch with CW.Filter-The E had removable rear cover for filter similar to LX.This was soon discontinued as all bags became 4 ply and after fiter was not seen in US until rare Hospital G and then 2100.(Canadian Elux seem to all have after filter.)Bag door-The E,S & R are only paper bag Elux with removable door before all were hinged.Rug/floor-The E/AE were the first with the combo nozzles and only rug/floor with no rubber bumper.Turbine tool-This seems to be a Euro fit-all the was sold with some central vac tool kits as well as vac store accessory.Above Model E-We might assume the previous owners traded a MoXXX and kept the older sprayer/demother and used it regularly at least through 80s when hose was replaced and turbine nozzle added.I would guess it to be from a smaller house and possibly have been used along with a later upright or an even newer Elux.In any case it looks to be well maintained and cared for with less than expected use.--In many ways the E can be considered the ultimate straight suction Elux.Hope it works as well as it looks.Happy Vacuuming!

@bagintheback

I just picked up another 70's red NuTone central vac earlier today and it came with the manual, and I think I know exactly what you're talking about the turbine nozzle being NuTone related. There's a picture of a turbine nozzle identical to it in the manual. Will post pics tomorrow.

Daniel :-)

Heres the tool found in the NuTone manual for my CV 353! It is the same tool! I have the motor driven one instead of the air driven power nozzle.

Heres some pics!

Not sure why the pictures went all patterned after I scanned it, but It gets the job done I guess. Heres that page with the tool that you were referring too.

You are the man to go to for Nutone information!

Not a problem! I love old nutones. They're the only central vacs ill buy now. I sold me kenmore central vac about a month ago and replaced it with a rebuilt NuTone cv450; two motor white unit. Then I have the Canadian cv353, and the American version of the 353 as well, which is what I picked up yesterday. I'm still looking for one of those brown NuTone attachment boxes though. I'd love to have one. That and the old square eureka dusting brush that went with them that was that creamy white colour. Here's a pic of my nutones :) Canadian model on the right which is missing the correct dust bin.

Daniel :-)

My parents have a red NuTone CV353 that is missing the floor tool (their house was built in 1987, and the vac was installed at that time). Please post the pics and/or part #s for the following missing attachments for it:

Floor tool

Wand elbow

In addition, one of the plastic knobs on the elbow of the Motor-Driven Brush has broken off. If you have the part # for that, too, please post it.

FYI...The attachments have a convenient dark brown plastic storage/carrying case.
