For me it's a real toss-up. While my favorite brand of vacuum is Electrolux, and favorite model is the LX (60) which I fell in love with back in 1953, I was about two years old at the time. seeing it eject the wrapper (bag) was awesome! I also have a strong interest in Kirby. My grandmother had a Kirby 512 (1952) and I loved it too.
Over the years I devoted a lot of time in research of both of these companies, as well as patent searches. Then in 1975 I got a job with Kirby, and eventually became a training manager dealing with the Omega, Classic 111, and Tradition. By that time I'd acquired a number of non electric vacuums that were all pre 1900, as well as a lot of background info on Kirby. Naturally, being a vacuum cleaner historian, I worked a history session into every class. My idea was "know your company, know your compeditor!" Then in 1981 I got to know a fellow collector through the Hoover company. This was John Lucia, and as I listened to the stories he had about digging info, I realized that we were not alone! The result was that he and I decided to form this club. Now I have a wealth of Kirby information that I love to share, so if you have questions about the older models like the 505, and earlier. I also know a lot about the first vacuum cleaners Jim Kirby designed in 1907, 1910, 1914, and 1917 (all pre Vacuette). I also know a lot about Georg H. Scott and Carl S. Fetzer, as well as James B. Kirby. We are all here to help you, and are glad you are part of our forum. Alex Taber. |
