I recently acquired an old red and black handvac that predates the 501 series. The issue is that when the motor is not under load it spins fast and strong. When I attach the belt it slows down drastically. The bearings are oiled and quiet, the belt is correct, brushroll is fine. My guess is the armature is going bad. Any ideas my friends?

Whenever the belt is successfully attached between the motor shaft and the brush roll, yes, the motor speed will be reduced slightly, but what I think you're saying is that it does so moreso than you think it should.

I say if that's the case, then it may very well be the armature.

I think you may have a model 157.

Yes, it is a 157, one of my favorites! I will arrange to have it sent off for restoration. Thanks for the info!
