HOOVER LOUDNESS WAR: POWERMAX UPRIGHT VS. ELITE II

Is it true that the very last PowerMax uprights (the Concept One Electronic derivatives) seemed to run as loud as those Elite IIs with 6.0 amp and higher motors?

I've had two Hoover PowerMax uprights in the past. The noise is almost unbearable when using the hose. I love Hoover but what were they thinking? Using the PowerMax with the hose on a hard surface floor could almost wake the entire neighborhood.

Kenny,

I wonder if the Power Drive Supreme models, those that replaced the Concept-derived PowerMaxes, were equally loud?

I've only heard that PowerMax model on youtube videos, never used one in real life. They sound in the video. The Hoover Elite 7.2Amp 17.0 C.E.A rating motors seem to fluctuate not sure why. Most I find ok and much better in noise compared to several Eurekas and Dirt Devils. However, I remember a Consumer Reports issue I believe 1996 where they rated most Elites as Fair noise level and a Preferred model as Poor noise level. Yet all the machines were rated the same motor.

I've been helping Service Master and Merry Maids these past few weeks with college apartment turnovers. They use commercial 7.2 amp Elites. A few different hood designs but otherwise pretty much the same "guts" inside. Some were definitely louder than others, but that could also be age as a few of these machines were definitely not in the greatest shape. Most of the good condition ones sounder great though, I didn't mind the noise at all.

There is some detail about this in the Elites, Elites, Elites thread I believe as well.
Wish I could be more help. Hopefully John Long will find this thread soon, with his extensive collection, he may know more!!

Happy Hoovering!! It Beats As It Sweeps, As It Cleans!!
