I was working on one of Rics Goblin Solo's today and after finding that it was dead, I took it apart and discovered this…

The commutator was completely annihilated! It was in pieces and scatted around the motor compartment. It come off with such force that it had cracked the outer plastic motor cover. I'm so glad this one hadn't gone on me! must have been scary!

I can tell you scary story's about motors exploding when I worked in engineering at Electrolux, I had the cooling fan from a two stage bypass motor hit me in the head once when a motor exploded while I wa testing it.

These motors spin at speeds ranging from 19000rpm up to 45000 rpm, so when something goes bang it goes bang in a big way

Ok this picture is really scary!! That motor looks extremely similar to the suction motor in my Eureka 1784B RotoMatic. I don't want that to happen to it!!!!

Well whatever happened to it, it seems to have been encapsulated by the cleaner it was fitted to. In actual fact, not withstanding the damage to the commutator, the motor looks quite healthy. No signs of burning to the field coils, armature, or commutator, from what I can see. So perhaps the commutator fell apart, or maybe the cleaner suffered a blow, such as falling down stairs. It could also have absorbed some water which damaged the porous areas.

The motor itself is one which was widely used by Goblin during the 1980's, but not much into the 1990's. Hoover also used it on some of their smaller cleaners. I wonder which one of them made the motor? I know Hoover UK used to make motors for other manufacturers for a good deal of years, so there is a chance the motor was one they made for Goblin.

Just had another look at it, can't seem to find any branding or indication as to who made the motor. Theres also no damage to the outer casing of the vacuum so I don't think it was dropped or anything like that. Theres no sign of any water entering it either. Since one of the carbon brushes looks like its been snapped clean off, i'm inclined to think that maybe the carbon got caught or something?
