By running a Vacuum Cleaner without a belt you are removing the "governor" and thus letting it over rev, so I wouldn't recommend it, even though there is a facility to do so on some makes (Kirby being the one I know of).
On an older motor it wouldn't do much harm I don't think, but still, she is an old girl, so I'd leave it. I doubt the increase in suction would be magnificent either, so you would probably just be wasting your time. |

It would be OK to operate the vacuum cleaner without the belt---the motors internal cooling fan and the suction fan act as governors to prevent overspeeding.Many uprights require you to remove the belt so you can use the hose. |
