I came home today to find ...are you ready? It is a "prized" HOOVER 65 GOLD , 50th anniversary Upright! A MUST have. As you know, (or, maybe not), these weren't 'sold'. They were prizes, gifts, etc for sales. It is considered rare. It came from my very close friend in North Canton, Mr. Tom Anderson. He told me to "look for something in the mail". Well, the water bill came, as well as the light bill. Then, 2 boxes!! I got an email from Dennis, as well. Not sure of the link. No pictures, yet. But, you KNOW how much I'll appreciate this. As great as it is, I appreciate the friendship so much more. Does this now make 401? 402? 403? Heck, who can count anymore?! I'll share this with ye very soon. Aren't I an awful tease?

Congraulations John

I came within a couple of Hairs of having a good friend get me a Gold Convertible
that is Grandmother had Won. When he was growing up in Sandusky Ohio. He knew his sister had got it. After his grandmother had come to live with his Mom and Dad. I held my breath for several weeks. Only to have my hope dashed into a
dumpster somewhere outside an apt. building in Port Clinton, Ohio.
Such is my luck, I did get his Mother's Hoover Green 87 Constellation, only to realize. That my friend, had put a flip on/off switch on the can. After his Mom and Dad were fed up with replacing the Hose with the Handle Switch on it. If I recall, the matching upright that she had. Did find it's way to me, but was totally done in. So I gave them both back to him, when I moved. They are sitting at the top of the attic stairs in his historic home in Lancater, Ohio.
So they are still in good hands.
Enjoy your gift, as they are as rare as Hens teeth. Even in Ohio Hoover Land !
Norm

John that's great,

Now what is interesting is I have a gold and black hoover 652 ( same shape) that I got from a friend who bought a appliance store that had been around since the 40's. He found it upstairs minus its bag and I have kept it tucked away in a box,
I wonder if it is not something done along the same line. These machines were manufactured in SA for SA so it is possible.

Thanks, gang.

Jamie: Yes, the gold light is much dimmer. They make 2 different wattages for those bayonet bulbs. Sometimes, people put in a bulb that was too hot. It added to the warping, along with the motor heat. You'd notice, if you took off the hoods, that, the light apparatus is not simply screwed on, as well as the bearing cap having 4 screws. That all modified with time. These cleaners are as strong as when they were new. I ran the gold one through the library (den) here and it really performed! Naturally, they would.I'm learning that I have, and, will post, a lot of the anniversary vacuums. I have the 100th year, the 50, the 25, the 40, the 75, and, possibly, a few more. Who knew? So, loook for the "AnniversaryWalk". I REALLY MUST photograph all of this stuff in nice, creative ways.

I've learned that , another thing that made these so rar

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
they only made about twenty thousand of them... a big difference to, say, one hundred and fifty thousand of a lot of other models. Can you imagine 150,000 HOOVERs rolling down the line? !Some were made for 2 years or so. Tom has an upright that was only made for 6 days. Yikes.

Cannot manage 150,000, but what about a few Juniors - taken in 1958 I reckon this is the final test area for the all new Junior model

If you should need any as part of your re-model - yes Hoover bag material. This is taken from the bag cutting area, same vintage. The pink material for Juniors, the blue for 638 or Dustette models

I would have LOVED to be in there seeing that in real life! All of those cleaners in a row look like the late pop artist "Andy Warhol" type of art. Are ye familiar with him? Thanks for those pics. Was that inside the famed Perivale plant?

Perivale

vacbear58's profile picture
John

The pictures are from two sites, the Junior line is in Perivale and the bag plant in a newly acquired building behind the main plant. At that time Connies where manufactured a few miles away in another factory in Wembley. This in addition to the High Wycombe plant (about 20 miles away) which was given over to the steam iron (HY had been round a long time, I believe it was previously for bag manufacture)as well as the washing machine plant in Wales and the electric motor plant in Scotland.

The bag plant may have been a temporary addition as the Perivale production lines would have been changed from the old style 119/1224 range to the 1334 Junior and in 1959 the "Senior" lines would be changed from model 638 to the new 652. The Wembley plant had been in use since the introduction of the Connie in 1956 - at this moment in time I do not know when Connies would have been transferred to Perivale although it may have been with the introduction if the 862 which would also have been in the planning stage at the time of this report. I will also have to check to see when the 417 cannister series (which carried on here with variations right through to the early 1980s) went to Scotland
