Hi Everyone!

To make a long story short, I needed to get some model trains repaired for my neighbor. When I met the repairman, Alex, I had mentioned the fact that I collected vacuum cleaners. He asked whether or not I had any canister vacuums from the 1930s. I thought about my collection in my head and told him no, I didn't, but my oldest was my Hoover 105 Special. He told me to wait there where I was standing and he went into his back room and came out with a dusty and green Magic-Aire with the attachments, including the hose, 1 extension wand, and the hard floor tool and carpet tool. He commented on how knowledgeable I already was with model trains, and because of this, he gave me the vacuum for free. Not to mention all of the knowledge that he passed along to me about repairing model trains! So anyways, it was well worth the visit to drop of those trains that day!

But can anyone tell me about Magic-Aire and does anyone have some pictures? The latch for the front of the vacuum seems incorrect, as there is another screw hole that is not taken up as well as another bar that seemed as though it would have something on it. I would love to see another one, as mine is in far from great shape. Mine is the model 178, green wrinkle finish with bakelite or hard rubber handles and the bumpers on the back end. Anyways...it runs fine, and I may eventually take it apart to clean out the motor. Thanks in advance!

~~K~~

Yeah, Ian, I think you are right! I am sorry to hear, though, that people have mistreated you. Kind of sounds like me...only I'm still a kid!

I can't take pictures at the moment. The vacuum is apart, as I was going to clean out the motor, but MAN that motor is hard to get out! I will have to remove like 8 nuts just to get it out. Not to mention the screws that actually hold it in! I will eventually get to it.

It is a strange looking vacuum, and I would find it hard to believe that GE made them as they were listed in a very early (1930s) Consumer Reports. Also, it doesn't even look like a GE! It was made in Cleveland, Ohio. Anyways, it's an interesting vacuum, and eventually I will get some pictures.

MAN! I have so many projects going on at the same time! Band, summer reading (grr!), making Kirby bags, repairing fans...I am just a busy kid!

Kyle

In 1961, we moved into a house that had hardwood floors in some areas of the house. My mother mentioned to a 2nd cousin that she would need to buy a tank (canister) to use on these floors. At the time, she had a Kenmore upright but it would't do the job on the hard wood floors. The cousin gave Mom a used Magic-Aire that had been purchased right after WWII. It was just as you described.

I have been told that GE produced the Magic-Aire for the door-to-door trade to complete with Electrolux and other brands sold in the same manner. I would guess that yours is probably from the post WWII period. If you look at some of the GE ads for their tank from the same period, you will see that the GE attachments are identical to what came with the Magic-Aire.

When you are able, it would be fun to see pictures. These are extremely rare and hard to find machines. Other than the one that Mom had, I have never come across another one.

Nice addition to any collection

Bob

I have personally never seen or heard of such a vacuum before, I would be very interested in seeing a picture of it. Discovering new brands of cleaners - one of life's joys.
