My 1977 HOOVER Senior Ranger has a vent on the left hand side of the body, which I presume is for cooling, but I never feel any air coming out of it.

I presume that is normal, but just thought I'd check.

In a word no. I may be wrong, but I think that air is drawn in through that vent, amongst other places, and exits thorough various gaps in the cleaner. The hood as I am sure you know is not air tight or sealed. There are gaps in the chassis and all around the area where the fork enters the cleaner. In order to feel anything through that vent, be it air sucked in or blown out, you would have to seal up pretty much all the gaps in the cleaner and seal the hood down. That way you'd know for sure.

Sorry I should have written 'yes' as in it is normal. I thought you'd said "should I be able to feel air coming out of it". My fault.

Thank you for yet another informative post! What would we do without you ? Worry endlessly about problems that went unanswered I suppose...

Something along those lines I would expect.

My Hoover Junior U1012 does that on the left hand side, however I have never noticed it on my refurbished junior, don't know why. :S

cuse....

the convertible and the Junior motor have cooling fans in the motors to help prolong life, and reduce heat...thats what your feeling. the excess air has to go somewhere.....

By convertible do you mean the UK convertible or the Hoover Senior (known as Convertible in the USA)?

I presume she means the Senior, as that is what we're talking about.

It is rather confusing however, the Dial-A-Matic being branded as the Convertible here in the UK with the Convertible in America being our Senior...
