![]() For many years I put off buying a carpet washer as I had my parents old Vax canister. The machine was great but it was a bit of a strain doing carpets with the suction only floor head. I've always recommended the similarly, but far better made Numatic George to others and I find myself possibly wanting the same model, even though it would mean the same kind of back wrenching experience for washing carpets. I've only had my Bissell upright washer for a year now but I'm not happy with it and at the time of purchase I couldn't afford to buy one with a built in hose.
Anyone in the UK have a Numatic George? Thoughts on it please!

![]() Since they came out I wanted a bagged T-series, just last week I paid mine off and I love it so far, it cleans just like a hoover should!!! For a TTI machine I am surprised with the quality as it seems like a durable machine. Powerful and light it will definitely do the trick and I also vowed to only use the HEPA bags in it seeing it was my 1st brand new purchase.

Re: Numatic George... I'm in Canada, but I adopted a Numatic George last year...
George is powered by a two-stage, bypass Ametek Lamb motor (Acustek series). He's one of the few all-in-one machines that can do all three functions (dry, wet and extraction) well.
Outstanding in almost respects, but there are really only two issues I have with him. First, when the vacuum is turned on and moved around, he sometimes has a tendancy to spit dirty water out the exhaust, and that's even with a small quantity of water in the tank. Secondly, the fishtail nozzle doesn't recover liquids quite as well as it should. Its design uses a rather large aperture and that choice in design results in the carpet remaining rather damp. Because of this, I now use an older Bissell Big Green nozzle for extraction with George.
As for a new machine that is currently in production, like others, I would love to have one the Rainbow E4 machines.

![]() Thanks for that info Piano_God (I also play piano too!). I was initially worried about the wash head tool being used on short looped wool carpets. Since that's what I have to clean up daily, it seems I'll just have to keep on using my Bissell upright washer until it breaks. The fishtail nozzle doesn't sound very efficient if it can't drain carpets as efficiently as others.

![]() Well, it only cost £70 brand new reduced from £99 at the time and it's already been back to Bissell free of charge. I just wish I had bought the model with the built in hose at the back and probably now missing the old Vax even though it was a heavy old thing.
I just wish Vax would update the current wash vac they have but they won't - they'll let it pass into history - even though it was the first machine they ever sold in the UK that had the 3 in 1 design. They have spun out so many versions in Australia though like a clear bagless design one where you can see the water collected in the base part of the dust bin to models that have the variable suction control dial and better tool storage points. Vax UK used to sell the pet version and more expensive black Rapide version but these days unless I consider other sellers of older stock, Vax no longer sell those higher spec machines.

![]() I have a bissel prohet x2 It works great on carpets but for some reason the water pressure is very poor when it comes out the hose. I really miss my old hoover spinscrub I wish we still got them here. I really like my bissel but I can't help but feel it was designed with the that will do attitude. There is a lot on it that could have been better. I really wish dyson would design and build a carpet washer I think it would be great.

The Kirby Sentria(I'd wait for the next model, but I must say that I don't like the pictures of the so called Avalir. It looks hard to use and of lower quality). The Filter Queen, I sold those for a week and love them. The newest Rainbow The Tri Star And the metal bodied Perfect. Justin

![]() He is a friend but we don't discuss business much , the vacuums that I sell have cost him many sales as its shows up there ancient old demo test of look what your old vacuum left behind. But I can't wait to see it myself, I really hope they have given it a complete redesign for there own sakes , my shop is littered with Kirby trade inns from people who find them to heavy but more so to cumbersome to use. There sales have taken a big knock, this can be seen by the number of Kirby dealers that have shut down, In Cape Town ther used to be 10 , now there is 1 . Not every one enjoys vacuuming like we do ( imagine how boring there lives must be ) to them its a chore and when something is a chore you want the lightest easiest machine to use. Just my view not knocking anyone

I use to work for UL and we had several prototypes of the new Kirby come through the office, it is a very different design from the current. Last I knew they were having some issues with some of the accessories drawing too much power away from the motor.

Numatic George![]() I had a George but I sold it after a few months. I really only wanted it for above floor cleaning, for the stairs, upholstery and car interior as the suction on it is far greater than the hose you get with many upright carpet washers. I found it very effective with the small wash tool but didn't bother using it for carpet cleaning as it would be hard work. I used the floor washing tool a couple of times but because it's awkward to set up, I can't see anyone using the George to regularly wash floors. There is quite a lot to store away too, with the two hoses and solution tank. An upright carpet washer with a hose has the same downsides as an upright vacuum with a hose. They tend to be easier to use on carpets but awkward when using the hose and the suction isn't always great. The best solution if you have the space and money is get an upright carpet washer for the carpets and a tank type 3 in 1 for everything else.
Currently I only have a Vax Oasis complete which is the nearest I could get to the Hoover Brush N Wash that we had for many years. I find it very effective on carpets and it does extract most of the water meaning the carpet dries in less than two hours. It is very noisy though. I also have a Bissell Spot Bot which is used for occasional spillages but it leaves the carpet quite wet when using the auto setting so I tend to go over the cleaned area with the hose which rather defeats the object of having an automated cleaning function. Regarding new vacuums, I would like a Sebo K3 Premium, or a C2 Total if I can find one. I have just purchased a Sebo Professional G upright from Ebay de but it hasn't arrived yet. I have owned a Sebo X4, X1.1 in white/grey and red/grey and an Ensign Sleath, all from brand new but all were sold as I kept forgetting how annoying the auto height function is on all these models. The brush always seemed to set itself too high and I was constantly raising the cleaning head off the carpet until the wheel adjusted itself to the lowest setting. I would then have a few precious seconds of decent cleaning before the brush would be lifted off the carpet. I'm hoping that the G model with its manual height setting will perform better as I will be able to select the height I want rather than the on board computer. I am currently in my Sebo phase again so most of the new vacs I want are Sebo's. I would also like a D4 Premium and a Felix Rosso.

I have both ![]() The Ultimate G Diamond Edition and a complete Sentria. Personally, I think the Sentria is a step backwards from the Ultimate G DE. The reason I say this is because the UG DE introduced a switch that reduces the motor speed for vacuuming delicate carpeting, etc. This in effect made it a four speed machine. This was removed from the Sentria. I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time) but I think it was removed because people left it in the low speed setting when vacuuming regular carpeting, and that lead to burn out of the motor. They are both, in my opinion, great machines, but if I could only keep one, I think I would keep the Ultimate G DE.

Well Gary,![]() The normal Kirby is a two speed machine. Speed is determined by the attachment mounted on the front (High for canister mode, low for everything else). When the switch on the UG DE is set to low, then I believe the attachment switch on the front of the machine would operate at the lower power providing lower speeds for tools and rug nozzle, etc. At least that is the way it was explained to me when I questioned it. I could be wrong. If I am, I would certainly appreciate it if someone would set me straight.

I'vw been Naughty........![]() Well... Further to my comment earlier in this thread. As its the Queens Diamond Jubilee here in the UK, I thought this Queen deserved a gift too....
Its a 2008 Model I picked up for a snip of a price.. This has been virtually unused and the previous owners (once they said, and I can believe it. No wear on the brush roll at all and totally clean). They even treated themselves to a brand new Zip Brush earlier this year and didn't even use it. Even has 2 hoses and the Handy Butler (Unsealed).. I'm a happy bunny.... Happy Diamond Jubilee to Me!!!!

My thoughts on Kirby...![]() Does Kirby still make that Hose End with the sliding speed selector? I have one on my GSix and I think it makes the Zip Brush easier to use and clean better. I'd like to put one on my mom's G3, and should I ever get a Sentria I'd put one on it as well.
As for the Speed Switches on the Diamond, there was the standard Speed Switch on the front of the vacuum as was one earlier G-Type machines. There was a second Speed Switch on the top-rear of the machine(I think it had a light inside). It was there so someone could lower the speed of the machine when vacuuming a delicate rug. I was told that it was removed when Kirby introduced the Sentria because of motor burn-outs, whoever, if that were the case I think I'd see rather a lot of Diamonds sitting in junk stores, pawn shops and the like... which I don't. I suspect that the reason for so many Sentrias being traded-in or replaced is the weight issue. I love Kirbys and would never go with out one... or several, but they are not easy to use if you have not grown up with them. They are way too heavy, when I lived in a two story house I had to have one upstairs and one downstairs because I did not like to carry them up and down... and what was before my heart gave out and limited the amount of weight that I can carry. That said, I still want a Sentria and when the next Kirby comes out, and if it meets with my approval, then I will want one of those too. Justin

The Kirby DE was indeed a four-speed machine. The switch on the back selected, in essence one of two speed RANGES. Just use a pen to activate the speed selector switch through all four possible combinations NORMAL-nozzle, NORMAL-hose, LOW-nozzle, LOW-hose and you can hear four distinct pitches. I doubt this was intentional, but it is what they ended up making.

I got an answer from Kirby![]() I posted the following query on Kirby's Facebook page:
Hi!, I own three Kirbys, 1) Sanitronic VII, 2) Ultimate G Diamond Edition, and 2) Sentria. I used to be a Kirby dealer selling the Tradition and the Heritage, as well as managing our local area distributorship service department back in the early 80s.. So I have a little Kirby experience :-) I have a question regarding the UG DE. I know all Kirbys from the DS 50 through the present are two speed machines. My question is would that make the UG DE a four speed machine, with the gentle switch this machine has? Thanks for any help. This is what they responded: Kirby Company Hi Joe. Thanks for the message. The Diamond Edition does have four speeds -- two for the upright nozzle and two for the hose mode. We hope you had a great experience as a dealer and service technician. Thanks for being part of the Kirby family! If you go to www.kirby.com/..., and click on US page, and then click on the Facebook icon on top of page, you will go to Kirby's facebook page. Joe

![]() So last night I tested out my UG and sure enough it has 4 speeds. I never knew that there are 2 different buttons that get depressed depending on whether the hose or the nozzle is being attached. When attaching the hose, the top button is depressed and when attaching the nozzle the bottom button gets depressed so along with the 2 speed switch that makes for 4 speeds. Learn something new every day!

In response to Pdieten about Spinscrub.
The newer Hoovers are saying Spinscrub 50, Spinscrub 45 and other numbers, I don't know if that number corresponds to any speed difference or if its just a name. It depends mostly on the series. The original series uses direct turbine power and is supposed to be very reliable. I think the spinscrub on that does a good job. Yes the bristles are extremely soft and if could be a little harsher, and spin faster for more agitation, also the brush head floats, so if it was more stationary that also would help, the main I think it needs is a PSI rated sprayer. It seems more of a mist of solution coming out so the machine I think does more surface to mid cleaning and perhaps not as good deep down cleaning. The V2 line focuses suction more with the nozzle. The brush turbine is belt powered I've heard and overall not nearly as a reliable a cleaner to original series. I know some vac shops that do not sell the V2/ All Terrain series. The Platinum looks like a good cleaner, it uses spin scrub and a multi brush vacuum style agitator for scrubbing along with I believe a better spray. Warranty is good, but I'm not sure about overall build quality. The Platinum line in general has great warranty but quality in that line especially sadly I've heard that canister has major issues with controls in the hose. I say sadly cause I love canisters. I'm not an upright person. Finally is the Pressure Pro series. I've heard mixed thoughts on these. When they work cleaning is supposed to be good. The idea here is when they work- not leaking or otherwise. The Agility and other lines are just cheaps to me, I pay attention only to the larger series. I have an original series Steamvac Widepath. I am happy with it. I do my annual shampooings with it. For better cleaning I'd go with Stanley Steemer or one of the professional style machines for $1000+. The Bissells are unreliable. I rented a Rug Doctor Widepath a few years ago. I thought it was the worst cleaner I'd ever used. Absolutely horrible. I only did one room with it. The next day I rented a RinsenVac from my local vacuum store and shampooed all 3 floors of the townhouse I was renting with it. I even redid the room i ran the rugdoctor in. Much better results.

New vacuum thougts I like canisters so it has to be that.
I've tried the Hoover Anniversary Windtunnel. Its good, I was hoping they'd put the newer Windtunnel powerhead on a bagged canister, they haven't. The hose on the anniversary machine is awful--stiff and hard to use. Otherwise a good cleaner. I got a used Riccar 1700 canister. I thought one of these was going to be mine dream machine. I like it, it cleans good, but I think there's better out there. Its heavy, its hard to maneuver, doesn't run over its own wheels, too many push buttons on hose handle and each time you turn it on, you have to reset the speed you want and turn on the powerhead. I think the agitator cavity should have a wider opening. I think its just too narrow for good suction seal and airflow time grabbing dirt on the rug. Also now CenTec is making the powerheads, they eliminated the Chevron brushroll. I'd like to try the Chevron wood brushroll. Has anyone used one of these? How do you like them. I do want a Royal Lexon SR30020 looks nice. I tried one in a vacuum store and glides so easily over the carpet but there's good power. Looks good on some youtube videos. Everyone talks great about Sebo. I tried several in a hotel they were awful. Maybe the maintenance staff just wasn't keeping up on them and I need to try a new one? The power nozzles on the youtube videos sound wierd and lame, just strange sounding motors. And Mieles I'm curious about but skeptical. The new Wessel Werk power heads coming on them that people rave about, are they really that good? Theres no bars on the bottom for keeping area rugs or extra base support. Wierd how its all open. I'm very interested in opinions on this. I really wish Hoover or Eureka went back to their 1980 routes with RotoMatic, Quadraflex Powermatics and created something neat and exciting again Thanks
