This past weekend while in Kansas City I brought home six uprights including: five convertibles and one self-propelled Eureka. The 34 was found at a thrift store and the 707, 66 and the plastic base convertible were found at three separate estate sales. I purchased the Eureka from Mr. Fix It’s vac shop in Kansas City. It’s a shame the 66 is lacking the original bag and cord but it runs very well. The bag collar had become lose and the motor compartment was full of bird seed and threads. The red convertible with the red striped bag was found in the trash with its cord cut. It’s amazing that most of the vacuums we find in the trash work great after a little TLC.
So now I have the 65, 66, 69, 34, 35, 1010, U4003, U4005, 1076, 704, 728, 707 and the 593 of the metal based convertibles. Hopefully, I’m finished. With these new finds I will be busy for quite a while; sorting and cleaning.

Love the new vacs, the plastic base convertible is U4413-042. I have one also, one of my favorites. |

The U4413 didn't work when I bought it. So the Estate Sale company let me have it for a dollar and fifty cents. It had been sitting in a basement. I imagine it's probably the switch since I'm using the cord on the other plastic base found in the trash. I plan on using the U4413 for parts.
Hopefully I can get my garage cleaned out soon. After this huge hall, it really looks cluttered :( |

I'm not really a big fan of the Eureka uprights, but this self-propelled model is amazing. The self propelled feature works very smoothly and it doesn't leave those big "tire tracks" on my carpet like the DAM and my former Concept. When I brought the Eureka home I tried to remove the top blue plastic strip on the bag and it broke the two little posts that hold the bag up. The outer bag was nasty on the inside and needed to be washed. Has anyone else had this happen? Forgive me I'm not familiar with Eureka uprights. The pancake motors look challenging so I leave those alone. |

Big surprise, huh? I need a bag for the 68, a grren hood and bag for the 66. Dennis Jones gave me the 'tigerstripe' plastic "Haney". MINT condition, a treasured vac, even though it's plastic, because it was a personal gift. I have a few 707s, hideous, but, like a 28, if you collect, you MUST have them. Anxious to see these specimens rehabbed. Get to work there!

That's a beautiful orange Eureka Roto-Matic Power Team! I believe it is the middle of the line-up from the very first line that debuted in 1973. It should be Model 1260 if I am not mistaken. The 1240 was a harvest gold version with no headlight on the nozzle and no control panel on the canister. The top of the line should be an Empress II version Model 1280 if I remember correctly.
Your orange Eureka canister was number two in Consumer Reports' rankings of all power nozzle canisters in 1974. A really great performer from the "Golden Age" of the Eureka Company. Enjoy your new toy! |

I've been using the Eureka canister for the past two days. It may need some bearing work in the future. Phillip may have to help with this since he is the local expert on Eureka canisters. I haven't started on the 34, 66 or the 707 but I plan to do so this weekend. The 707 must be a common model, because I've seen four of them in the past two years, or they were popular in my area. Who knows!
John - I like the tigerstripe Convertible as well. It seems very deluxe with the hand grip and headlight.
Brandon - The color on the 66 is just okay to me. The 65 and 69 had a better color scheme. But that's just my opinion. The original bag would probably make it look even better. Thanks for responding. This post was last edited 05/01/2012 at 13:02 |

Interestingly enough, I have found no less than four Model 34 Convertible's in my travels. One being the one Kenny has. So my town must have sold a ton of that model where I live. |

That Eureka "Iron Sides" (as they are called) cannister is one of the best every produced by Eureka, imho. It wasnt heavy to use, and followed you around easily. Was a very user friendly vacuum. I remember the cord winder "Cordaway" could put your eye out of you werent careful,,,had a STRONG pull back spring!
You really had to be careful,,it could have easily nailed someone! The handle grip of the hose was easy to hang onto, and these PNs were excellent! I think they originally had a VG 1 in them? I remember the PN was called a Roto-Matic. This vac was also easy to use on stairs, and the attachments were the deluxe ones. I remember a neighbor lady back in early 1975 that bought that exact orange model. She would pay me once a week to "run her sweeper" as she was elderly, and had alot of thick carpet, and didnt like to vacuum. She had a large house with thick wall to wall shag,,low pile kitchen carpet,,and carpet in her bathrooms, all stair ways, and even the whole basement had carpet. Even the basement walls had been carpeted half way up, with dark panneling going up the rest of the way. (it was a 1960s, 70s thing) I remember the basement carpet was a thick orange and green shag. I remember this specific machine being VERY VERY POWERFUL,,so much that you had to use the suction adjuster on the top of the cannister to lower the suction on her low pile carpet,,or you couldnt move the PN at all,,,it would clamp down to the carpet,,TIGHTLY! Infact one time when i was using it, the PN picked up a snag in her kitchen low pile carpet, and pulled up a whole row, which cost to have a carpet man come out and replace. I felt bad about ,,but the lady understood it wasnt my fault. It was that Darn powerful vacuum! I know a few times when i went to change the bag, id open up the cannister to find the bag had burst open at some point,,,i think that vac was almost TOO STRONG! |

Hey there Kansas Brian!
I always called the "boxy" Eureka canisters (series 1600) the "Sweet Sixteen"s because that's what Eureka called them in the early 1970's before the Roto-Matic Power Team versions came out. The name is obviously based on the series number "1600." I don't think the "Ironside" term came out until later in the 1970's or even the early 1980's (I've actually never seen one with the name "Ironside" on it). The power team versions were given model numbers in the 1200 range - so the Sweet Sixteen term no longer applied when these power nozzle canisters debuted. Great to hear that these Eureka Sweet Sixteens were powerful! No wonder they aced Consumer Reports testing...... Toronto Brian :-) |

Noticed that you have an identical Eureka canister in your collection, they are great! I plan on keeping this one. Love the suction control panel on the front of the canister. My Ward's canned ham is lacking this feature. Brian, you are correct it is powerful.
I usually clean the fans with an air compressor and air gun and get a lot of dust out of the fans and motor with this method. A better way would be to disassemble the entire motor and wash the fans in warm water and soap. I’ve noticed that these are not the best at filtration. There was quite a buildup of dust in the fans and motor. Nevertheless, I have really enjoy using this canister as you said they maneuver well. |

This weekend I finally had some spare time to cleanup my Convertible 34 and 66. They were both dirty. Below is a picture of the products that I used in the cleanup and restoration process.
Napa/brake drum grease: for the lower motor and agitator bearings. Normally, I leave the top sleeve bearing alone. The top bearing usually does not need oiling.
Metal polish: for the base.
Johnson's Paste Wax: for the hood.
Simple green: to remove dirt and grime.
Vinylex: for the bumper, vinyl bag and cord.
Steel wool (not pictured): for the bottom plate and brushroll cavity. |
