Reusable bag! It is almost the same as a draw string bag, how it lets air pass through it, beyond me! |

Love getting a close look at these old European Electrolux uprights! This must be an early fan first precursor to the later 500 series....am I correct.
But I'm totally befuddled....can't figure out how you open the bag compartment. From your pictures, it looks like you actually swing the whole box around to the back 180 degrees - am I correct? |

There is really no connection between this model and the 500 as this is a "dirty" fan whilst 500 series was clean fan. There were three iterations of this cleaner: 152 White/Green trim, 160 coffee/cream and the 170 as shown above. The model first appeared around 1967 as the 152, the 160 around 1969 (very short lived) and the 170 ran for about 10 or 11 years. You are correct about the dust bag box, when the clip is undone the box drops down very slightly so it can be turned through 180 degrees to replace the (paper) bag. Tools used a pan connector attached at the front of the machine. The brushroll has a single straight brush strip positioned opposite a single straight beater bar and has the same sort of sound as a Hoover brushroll. There are no wheels on the front of the machine, just at the rear. It was pitched up against the Hoover Junior mainly, but offered several convenince improvements such as the very easy bag replacement, quick release flex and somewhat better filtration. I have seen a US softbag cleaner (possibly a Sears) which looks very like this cleaner (well the base anyway) - there was no softbag version of this cleaner (in the UK at least) although the successor model did have a softbag version. that looks like a short lived machine we had here in the states called the Regina Brush.N.Beat, it used the same handle and head, but it had a soft bag in the front and not the hard cover.... |

congratulation on your 170. As I have probably mentioned before I grew up in an Electrolux family. My Nan had a 152 and later a 170, both my aunts had 160's then 170's and my mum and grandma had 160's. I love those cleaners....I think the 152 is my favorite though, I loved the colour. You will find they are easy cleaners to maintain and the fill tube and box can be detached for cleaning. In fact when I was about 6 or 7 I completely stripped down my mums brand new 160! Took a while for my dad to put it back together and ever since my mum used to panic if she saw me with a screwdriver in my hand!!!
