Some of you might remember me mentioning not long ago that I had a 541 Hoover "on the way any day now." After almost 3 months of waiting and emailing back and forth and getting nothing but excuses from the woman whom I'd bought it from on ebay, I had somewhat given up on it, especially after she refunded my money, even though she had promised she was going to ship the vacuum and refund my money to make up for the long wait. Anyway the refund arrived but the vacuum still hasn't, but I won another 541 on ebay which is now in my posession, having received it in less than 2 weeks after winning it. I already had a 541 instruction book and tool kit that I had bought while waiting for the one that never showed, so I was determined that I HAD to have the 541 to go with it.
The 541 I now have is kind of an oddball. The base and handle are original, but it has a replacement bag (don't they all?), and it appears the motor has been replaced. The motor housing is aluminum instead of black, and has, believe it or not, a small built-in (not added on) headlight, with a screw-in bulb instead of the usual bayonet base. It runs, but seems to lack power--barely blows up the bag.
Also received a model 512 Kirby from the same friend who gave me my Lewyt 90 and Electro-Hygiene 701 last year. It's incomplete, with only the power unit, handle and bag, but what's there is all original. It needs a good polishing, and we fired it up by holding the safety switch down with a screwdriver, and it runs GREAT!! So if anyone happens to have an extra nozzle or hose and attachments for a 512 Kirby, I'd appreciate hearing from you!
Jeff

Jeff,

I will be happy to take a look at it. I may have a running parts 541 that could donate its motor. Sounds like someone did some modifying over the years.
