I am loving the model 70 I recently picked up on ebay but I am having one problem with it. It will severely snag rugs with anything greater than a very low pile. I am trying to be as gentle as possible when I run over them. I can't seem to determine where it is catching. Anybody have any ideas for me? Thanks.

Another thing this vac has going for it...

I absolutely love how low the nozzle is on these old convertibles. I am getting spots that my $600 Simplicity could never reach.

Do you use the height adjustment (norm, high) on the opposite side of the handle release? For medium and high pile carpets, you might want to set the height to high. There could be a problem with the height adjustment lever, which should be an easy fix as long as there are no missing parts.

and, remember, on the 2-height models....

when you put the lever at "high", you must push down on the back wheels for the it to "shift". These are very different from the simple 4-height adjustment. Enjoy it. They were/ARE great vacuums.

@gottahaveahoove:

I love those Hoovers you have! It looks like some of them need new light bulbs, but nonetheless, you just can't beat those Hoovers!

I have been using the high setting almost exclusively because it has a brand new brushroll and with this generic belt it will slip on low. I have genuine Hoover belts on order because I could not locate any locally. If anybody has a blue hood or bag for a 70 that they are interested in selling please give me a shout. Thanks.

OH!! I WONDER IF . . .

the new brushroll was different from the original, in which case it might not be working for your machine. You should try to find someone on this site who has an ORIGINAL brushroll for this model.

That would make a difference!

Does it have the "beater bar" on it?

And, yes, I'll replace all of my burned out bulbs. I stocked up on the bayonets at Lowe's.

No, the replacement has two rows of brushes instead of the beater bar. I have put the original brushroll on but I am not sure that it is doing any better.

I have ran my Hoover 70....

I bought my mom a brand new hoover model 70 and she had medium pile shag carpet. No problems using it on the normal setting at all. Also I have tried the brush roll you are talking about and it will stall or make the motor sound different in my model 70. It also did not handle the nap of my carpet very well and I have low pile plush carpet. I was fortunate enough to find a genuine hoover brush roll on Ebay a while back, which works great in my model 70.
