They were bought out around 1988 to replace the 2000 series and continued into the early 1990s. The model 2000 was still on sale after the Dolphin was bought out, into 1990, because the 2000 was exclusive to Electricity Board stores. But other 2000 models had finished. The Dolphin came in several models, too many to remember as they all looked the same, but not that many. The biggest change was when the on board tools went from being inside the dustbag area, to a small lidded area on the top of the cleaner.

They crop up on ebay from time to time - not seen that many of them but seen a few over the years.

Very possibly knocked off, who can tell. But like I said, there is also a massive ammount of counterfeit cable doing the rounds too. It's actually very worrying.

If I remember rightly, there were three Dolphins in the begining. The middle range model is the one pictured here, 1200 watts with electronic control and boost. The top model was I think 1400 watts. It purple with electronic remote control hose and used the exact same small tools -even same colour- as the lilac Hoover Turbopower Total System upright. In fact they all used the same tools, but the purple model was colour co-ordinated. The other two models were grey.

The bottom of the range model is the one I am least familier with, I think it was either single or twin-speed. There was not a lot to seperate the Dolphin range from the Lite range really, and the Lite cleaners had the exact same motors and similar sized bag, but were smaller cleaners and much lighter and less bulky. The Lite cleaners were originally 1000 watts and I am sure the bottom of the range Dolphin was too. The main thing was that the small tools were very small on the Lite cleaners. But the rest of the tool kit was the same and only the top model had metal tubes. The biggest change came when the tools were fitted into a flap in the top of the Dolphin, instead of sitting above the dustbag. I cannot swear to it but I am sure there were other models before the range was superseeded.

I was lucky enough to find one in a junk shop a few weeks ago.

Its been interesting comparing it to our Lite, Im not sure they use different motors as they sound unalike in many ways but anyhoo,

Mine is the TOL Purple one with 1400w Boost power and remote control handle, thankfully it still works.

Very powerful, and a feature that Modern "Engineered" brands seem to brag about these days as their own creation, ideas and doing.

Very quiet too,

Hello...not sure if you are agreeing with me about the motor or not. Well anyway, the Dolphin and the Lite both had the same full sized motor which had been around since the late 1960s. Although the Lite was replacing the Slimline, Electrolux decided not to use the same 500-upright-sized motor in the Lite, unlike the Slimline cleaners. About 1993 Electrolux introduced the Microlite cleaner, which was a very cheap quality version of the Lite, and that had the same small motor as the Slimline range. They were very loud in the Microlite.

Now as for Tools, did they really come inside the cleaner? I cant see any extra provision for them, HAd assumed it cxame with a purple crevice and butterfly tool but I suppose the Lilac Hoover tools could of been included. However still not sure they were onboard additions - the cavity really is quite small for the Hoover Tools.

VintageRepairer are you sure you dont refer to the Hoover Sensotronics/Compacts?

Now that floor tools is very different from the one supplied with the other two models. I had forgotton that the top model had this. The other Dolphin had the same Electrolux brand floor tool as the Lite. Originaly the Lite had a colour-matched tool as seen on the Vax 121 but they soon changed to one of their own.

Turbomaster, I am quite sure. Your cleaner is missing the tools. They sat across the dust bag, in a holder, just as the Hoover Compact did. The sensortronic was different again as you could access those tools with the cleaner running. The Dolphin and Comapct required you to switch the cleaner off, or else the suction held the lid down. This is most likely why Electrolux changed the design to one where the tools were in a lidded section of the bag door on later models.

Yes Sorry

I had forgotten all about the LITE, I was in fact refering to our MicroLite.

The lite was a boxy rectangle affair IIRC that came in either Red or White, think the Red was TOL.

Sorry for the confusion

That was the only image I can currently find. Like i say, a tray was provided to store the tools on early models.

Hi again. No, you're thinking of the Elite now, from the middle 1980's. The Lite was the exact same shape as the Microlite. It was on sale from about 1988 until 1991. The standard model was pastel blue, the middle (autoflex) model white, and the top model with autoflex and variable power was dark grey. In 1991 the colours changed. All of the cleaner were white & dark grey, with deep blue accents on the BOL, pink on MOL, and green on TOL. Afer this, the top cover went trough a redsign but were still called Lite. Later, the Microlite was brought out and the current Lite design went on to be called Classic and Chic, with the BOL machine being dropped altogether.

Well you learnt something about your Dolphin tonight :) It would have had a tool tray. It's probably been lost, I mean getting the tools in and out was such a performance, it was easier to leave the tray in the cleaning cupboard and take it round the house as you were cleaning.

One thing which the Dolphin did have which the Lite didn't, was the facility to attached the suction hose to the blow end of the cleaner. However there were not that many cleaners which did this by 1988 and I don't think that many customers wanted it particulalry.

Hi

kirbymodel2c's profile picture
Hi I have 3 Electrolux Dolphins. One is the same TOL model as the one above.
I've checked mine and mine has the tool tray and attachments still in it. Also one of the other Dolphins has the attachments in a compartment on the top.

I've took pics of both and will post them later when I get home.

I also have two lites I think and one Chic (Dark Green) which was a later version of the Lite from the mid 90s.
I also think I have brochures on the Dolphin/lite as well as the later chic etc.
I have a White Elite as well which was the TOL but still need the Red one which was the same as the white but did not have the variable power.I had one years ago but it broke and have not been able to replace it since.

James. Great photos. If I may correct you on one think, I am not disputing that your exact Lite cleaner there is from 1992 if you have something to indicate this, but that range was launched in mid 1991 to replace the original three Lite cleaners. By todays standards, the quality of the Lite was excellent.

Now that is interesting! The 1610 Microlite must have just gone on sale, and it never had that floor tool either. The wattage of that cleaner went from 800 to 1000 and even 1100 over the next few years. Interesting to see the 3rd generation Lite cleaner (the one in pink) which formed the basic design for the Chic and Classic in the years that followed.

I remember seeing an Electrolux Dolphin around 1990-ish, that was salmon-pink. It might have been a Currys exclusive.

I didn't like the Electrolux cylinders, because the plastic they used seemed to smell of mothballs.
