Did they work well as a dry cleaner?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

* SCREAMS *

Yes, I did have one of the canisters - one of the most painful vac experiences I ever had. Those were made by Panasonic, and a few years after they were produced, Sears and Panasonic got into some sort of megillah that resulted in no replacement hose availability for a time (I understand they're available again, too late to do me any good). Worse, the hose was prone to premature failure via splitting, and I mean BAD splitting - you'd tape one split and another would appear before you got the tape put away.

After about a year and a half of frantic taping, I finally got rid of the thing, because I could not get a new hose. Between this baby and a Hoover Dimension that blew its motherboard, I said goodbye to new vacs forever.

OMG!!!

I've got one downstairs with whats left of the hose. The model that I have, the hose is completely obsolete. I will have to dig it out and get some pics of it, if I can find it.

I had the canister (still have it but no hose)

Will the new hose fit or can I still get the one this canister originally takes?

I acquired one through a local estate sale, think it was called a Power Handle Canister, but sold it on Ebay awhile back, maybe a year or so ago...I wasn't impressed with it...the hose needed work, but it sold on Ebay. I laugh because the catalog states "deluxe tools" that 4 piece tool set was standard on most of their canisters...nothing deluxe about them in my eyes, haha.

I think he's asking about the dry clean upright thing. I have one and I think it's great. This model can also be used for plain vacuuming. It has paper bags that are long discontinued. Seems to very powerful though i never used it for dry cleaning. I also have the other model that's a cyclonic bag less and it's a peice of Sh@@.

I've never seen the dry cleaning machine.

We did have a similar canister. A cousin gave it to us as she got a new vacuum, and it was a lower end model without the power handle or headlight. I really liked that machine. The hose was duct taped but otherwise it worked fine. Unfortunately my mother threw it away when she got a new Kenmore Whispertone canister in 1999. She tried to sell it at a yard sale but it didn't sell.

The shape of the upright looks similar to the power nozzle that Alex Braun has. That won one of the competitions at the convention, if I remember correctly.

Is 1984 the date of the catalog? Machine looks like a Panasonic product but I didn't know they were using that case design in '84. The material used in early Panasonic-made hoses wasn't the best. Premature embrittlement was a problem. You can restore such hoses with later hose stock using the original fittings. Many of the Kenmore hose fittings come apart by being squeezed on the two sides with the latches, then from there it's pretty easy. I've restored many Kenmore electric hoses with hose sections taken from other makes, such as Eureka and Hoover.

Gary and all, the 24991/2 Powerhandle is still a 100% Whirlpool product, Sears Best canister from 2/3/84 to early 1987 at a price of $439 USD and the beginning of the "Premier" line 5055 swivel hose models.  This was the only model with a 3 wire white hose, prone to the splits, and the only way to get a replacement is the gray 3 wire hose body part 4150585 (NLA).  There is another Powerhandle Kenmore, the gray 26455 with the 4.5 motor and the wide beam quick release Powermate, oh what I would do to get one of them.

Brian, I bought your Powerhandle back in 2010 and still have it, but this one I had Chad Cunningham get for me in Kansas City (thank you again) as the seller was a cuckoo church lady feeling uneasy about me driving 500 miles round trip for a sweeper.  Mine had a perfect hose until 2 weeks after I got it the dreaded splits started forming near the handle and I used silicone sealant and white electrical tape to hold it together.

Kenny, funny you should mention how the dry clean n vac looks like my Ultra Vac Power-Mate II, the dry clean n vac is actually referenced in the patent for the machine when describing the nozzle body and design.

I just recently acquired a similar canister model. Mine is not the power handle model. It has the power switch & cord rewind pedal on the rear of the canister.Complete with all tools & a non-splitting hose all for $2.99. I was ecstatic to find this model since this was the identical machine that my dad bought for my mom on their anniversary in '86 or '87. Seems there was a past thread about something that could be used on these hoses to keep them supple & prevent cracking, anybody remember what it was??

curb find

I picked this up on the curb just last week. A landlord was cleaning out a rental house. I had to repair a split in the hose by the handle, but I have to do that on alot of my older kenmore canisters.

Nice finds on the canisters. I never see them around, and I don't recall seeing any of the fancier ones with powerhandle or the rewind pedal and speed control from that era. The ones I saw and had just had an on/off pedal.

A Lot of the Canisters....

....Bit the dust a long time ago due to non-availability of replacement hoses. Sears turned a lot of customers into non-customers with the situation, Yours Truly included. I ate a five-year-old Whispertone that I'd bought new and taken impeccable care of.

Had no choice but to junk it - they're no use if there's no hose. You saw them in thrifts a lot a few years ago, always the same story - hose full of splits.

You are right on the hoses. Both our beige front hose and swivel hose canisters had to have the hoses taped with duct tape. I also had a green and gray swivel hose canister with silver/gray hose that too had to be taped.

Both of the gray hoses on our green 1999 Whispertone canisters seem to be okay. One has one slight crack, but I think that's it. The hoses on these are smooth and not textured, and I've seen what appears to be the same hoses on the lower end TTI-made Kenmore canisters at Kmart and Sears.

I did see a beige 3.9 swivelhose Kenmore at an estate sale, and it had a replacement gray hose that appeared to be in good shape. I bet the original had fallen apart too.

Ok Phillip, the Dry Clean n Vac is a Singer/Ryobi product, the early version of the DryTech capture dry carpet cleaning machine.  You are right that it can be used as a regular vac or as a dry carpet cleaner.  Click on the link for patent info.

I'm just in awe of how you were able to replace a molded end hose carcass with a central vac hose, I'm reading the patents as we speak of how it looks on the inside....

Can U make a 10ft long electrified hose for a Electrolux 1205, Epic 6500 or Ambassador?  It sure looks difficult making a new hose with molded ends

Post# 291940 , Reply# 30   8/4/2014 at 18:15 (3,550 days old) by DesertTortoise ()

I recently acquired a beige 4.1 with the two speed motor just like the one depicted above I am about to embark on refurbishing. It arrived filthy with cracked and decayed hose and no wheels (WTH, did the owner drag it on it's belly or carry it by the handle everywhere?). This will be my third vac of this series. I like them a lot.

If Davinator has the patience I am going to embark on learning the dark arts of making up new Kenmore hoses using central vac hose stock and the original Kenmore hose ends.

Post# 292026 , Reply# 31   8/5/2014 at 14:15 (3,549 days old) by DesertTortoise ()

Alexb1186, those early 5055 bagged 24991 canisters, like most Kenmore canister vacuums from at least 1971 forward are Matsushita products made in the US at one of the many US plants operated by Matsushita Electric Corporation of America. Matsushita began manufacturing consumer electronics and electrical industrial goods in the US in 1961.

I want you to compare that 24991 canister as you call it with a Panasonic MC-V9626. Here is a diagram of the Panasonic version that you claim is "100% Whirlpool".

www.hescoinc.com/schematics/panas...

Here is another version of that vac you ought to recognize, the MC-V9634

www.hescoinc.com/schematics/panas...

And this next vac, the Panasonic MC-V9628 is recognizable as a member of the Kenmore Whispertone series.

www.hescoinc.com/schematics/panas...

Same vacuums, probably from the same assembly lines in the US, just different names on them. Production was moved from the US to Mexico sometime early in the production of the Whispertone series. I have both "Made in the USA" and Mexican made versions of the Whispertone series. The power nozzle is still in production today in Mexico, mostly unchanged, and sold for use with central vacuum systems under various names such as Hayden Delux, Nutone and Centec.

I have a letter directly from Sears where I posed to them the question of who manufactured my earliest Kemore canisters, starting with my 1971 vintage 2.7 model number 116.29971 . You can look that model number up on Sears Parts Direct and see for yourself what the vacuum is. It's a big heavy steel thing with a plastic lid. In Sears reply they state that vac is a Matsushita product, as are all of my many Kenmore canister vacs save one example made by Ryobi. I believe you have to go back to the 1960's to find Kenmore vacuums manufactured by Whirlpool.

I can post my question to Sears and their reply if you require. I am not inclined to argue with Sears position on this subject.

Post# 292098 , Reply# 32   8/5/2014 at 22:49 (3,549 days old) by DesertTortoise ()

I also can't get over what Sears was asking for those vacuums back in 1985 or thereabouts. $549 for a vacuum back then was a huge amount of money for a family to spend.

For grins I inflated that number to 2014 constant year dollars using the DoD Inflation tool (I use this tool at work routinely and is available on line to anyone). The constant dollar inflation index for converting 1985 dollars to 2014 dollars is 0.5379. The calculation is to divide $549 by the index. The result is $1020.64. Kenmores of that era were relatively that expensive. Today their top of the line canister vacuum retails for $450 and usually sells for a lot less than that.

Sears sold a premium vacuum back then but charged a premium price. It is surprising they moved as much merchandise as they did at those kinds of prices. Today a thousand dollar vacuum is a niche product.
