My 589 and some of my other convertibles have a cracked tool door. The door has trouble staying shut and leaks suction. I suppose I could just try and glue it shut. Since I hardly use the rear conversion tools; the front conversion “power seal” tools provide more suction even on the older metal based convertibles.
I can imagine that was a pretty common problem back in day, for the tool diverter door to break on the metal based convertibles. |

I went through the same thing growing up. I ended up reinforcing the back side of the door with vinyl electrical tape and then putting a small bead of clear silicone around the backside edge and it did a good job of securing a crack in the door and not leaking. I used graphite on the spring after cleaning it with WD40. I did have to check on occasion to make sure the door was closed tight. Just a couple thoughts. Convertibles forever! :)
