I wanted to love them! I thought i would! But I don't, infact I hate him!! Can somebody tell me why they like theirs?

I have an e2, he cost a lot of money. I find his suction basic, his power nozzle is horendous! His plastic cheap (he creaks when you carry him) he is time consuming to use and maintain.

I still want to love him, but I find him to basic. So he's sat collecting dust, and not in the way that he should be!

Why do you like/dislike rainbow?

I love my Rainbow. I've had one since I moved into my first apartment back in 1998. It's great for my allergies, I can do a lot with it besides just vacuuming, I have the 4 quart water pan and a third hose that I use for wet pickup and shampooing the rugs, I have the rug scrubber. The air always smells better and really you don't have to worry about buying bags and filters, and if you really take care of it your maintence is at a low cost.

Yes it is rather time consuming sometimes to have to empty and dry the water tank, and there are times you wish you had something that you could just stash in the closet and be done but you will never find the perfect vacuum. It's always something. Really this was one of the best investments I made for my home.

RainbOw

MInes a e series and now he sits in my storege unit. The power head stoped working and i found the cleaning power weak and crappy! So i got me a miele and i love it and now im Gonna buy me a new miele s6 to replace my rainbow . The other reason i hate it beacuase its too time consuming and cheaping. People conplain about regular vacuuming blowing dust and you have to store the dust in the closet ! But big deal . Then some people compain that reg vacuum smell nasty after they vacuum and it smells like there animal. I say the animals dont belong in the home!. And if they do give them a bath that will solve your problem haha. They came out witha updated verison the rainbow which i hate

Who Likes Rainbows?

I do like mine but they are not for everyone. What I appreciate about my Rainbow:

(1) great if you have allergies (certified asthma & allergy friendly and AHAM certified)

(2) you have full power and air flow EVERY time you use it and it maintains the air flow during use

(3) No expensive bags to buy

(4) like the new longer power cord and electric hose

(5) can be used to pick up wet spills, shampoo carpets and wet clean hard surface floors

(6) never any stale vacuum odor

(7) active edge cleaning revolving brush on power nozzle work very well in close quarters and around chair legs

(8)  long warranty

(9) made in USA and in business for 75 years

(10) Never storing  the dirt and filth in the closet form week to week

I like rainbows but they are not my favorite and I don't use it in my house, I prefer uprights.

I think its water filtration is good but no better than a miele or sebo with hepa .

I like the looks and I like the quietness, they don't use bags which is nice , I just don't think there cost is justified.

I have a se, e series . both are good vacs but I wouldn't buy one new not for that price.

Who Likes Rainbow?

Gareth,

I sure have enjoyed your posts on the forum. I also agree with you that a Rainbow is NOT for everyone. I used to be able to use an upright but in this house they are almost useless with so many different floor types and levels.

I just could not get past the fact if I paid $1000.00 to $1200.00 for a top of the line cansiter I still was going to be spending about $100.00 to $125.00er year on hepa bags and filters and that goes on for as long as you own the product.

Keep up the nice posts

I love my rainbow. I have the D4SEPE right now. A nice and quiet vacuum.

Yes emptying can be a pain sometimes.

I did have a 2 speed E2 model (the last gold decal one) It was a GREAT vacuum. Just a little noisy.

Rob

thank you very much , personally I use a number of dysons and a AEG by Electrolux supercyclone at home. Our home has a major mixture of Carpets loose rugs tiles and wood flooring, I also have 11 cats 3 dogs and 2 inside bunny's so pet hair is a major problem. We used to have a miele cat&dog and a Electrolux oxy3 and Eureka Ultra smart vac. all were bagged vacuums but I would go thru atleast 2 bags per machine a week. When dyson came to SA eventually I became an agent and started using them instead.

The rainbows are very nice to lok at but I find them two heavy to pull around and when your house like ours is made of many levels they can tip over which is a big mess. I did this one day by accident while trying to vacuum something on another level. I spent the next hour cl;eaning the carpet with the Bissel proheatx2 NOT FUN

Still they appeal to me .

addressed the problem of struggeling with pulling it around they added more wheels to the dolly and now its easier to pull and it wont tip over as the older ones used to . I love my Brand new 2011 E2 Onxy . All the problems have been addressed. It is now a much improved Rainbow and I enjoy using it more than I do my E2 Platnium Blue model . Also I own a Pro Aqua , Aura Robo Clean and an Ocean blue . All very good water vacuums . When I use any other vacuum my home is much more dustier than when using a Water Vacuum .

Who Likes Rainbows?

Dan,

I think you are correct about the dolly. I never even used the dolly with my old Rainbow but the new design is so much easier to use. Those extra wheels and the new rubber trim make it easier to go from one surface to the next. Also really like the new cord wrap set up. Since I use mine on a daily basis ,I only loop the cord and drop it on the cord holder. No winding and no cord winder to brreak or add weight.

I also like the fact that I can store the floor brush on the machine during use and can go from carpet cleaning to bare floor cleaning by just changing the tool. No more double hoses, wands and the new extra length hose really helps in my house.

Did you notice they redesigned oblong shape of the Dolly so the tools and even the wide floor brush do not stick out and catch on the machine as it moves from room to room and between furniture.

It is so strange that the basic machine looks so similar to my previous Rainbows but the ease of use and power have really been changed. It seems like they made changes that benefit the customer's ease of use.

WOW ,do you ever give ANY vacuum a real work out with 11 cats,3 dogs and 2 bunnies! I have one little cocker spaniel and he keeps me busy with the Rainbow and shedding dog hair.

Don't have a Rainbow...

...but I sprung for a Hyla. It was used, so it was a good deal. An impulse purchase, really.

To tell the truth, I haven't really used it. I'm just getting my feet wet with vacuums, so I'm trying out a bunch of different uprights currently. One important thing to me is the quality of the filtration. I'm partial to high filtration, which means Hepa rated or near Hepa. If a vacuum is leaking dust, I can feel it on my skin and in the back of my throat. I hate that feeling.

I understand the current Rainbows have a Hepa filter after the water trap. What do you guys think? Did they add this because the water trap doesn't filter to Hepa standards or did they do it for marketing purposes? I'm interested because the Hyla, like the older Rainbows, doesn't have a post Hepa filter. Can you guys tell the difference?

I've only seen pictures of Rainbows, never one in person, but I'm not sure I like the styling of the old Rainbows. It's not performance related, but if you're going to live with a vacuum, you'd better like the way it looks. I keep thinking of 70's woodgrain. Am I right that some of the older models looked like that? I much prefer the look of the Hyla (sort of art deco styling and text), and the sleek modern look of the Pro Aqua and Delphin. I haven't seen to much of the new Rainbow, but I'm sure I'd like them better than some of the older models.

The E Series and the brand new one just seem large and clunky. I love my D4C the round shape. It's rather easy to store and from what I can gather more quiet than the E series. I've been asked why I haven't ungraded yet and the answer is simple. "Why fix whats not broken."

Who Likes Rainbows?

Khoi,

Sorry I have not used a Hyla. They look like an old Rainbow style and would asume they would operate much the same.

I know nothing about the hepa filter. I do have one on my new Rainbow. It is to be checked every 3 years. I don't expect to find much on my hepa because I change the water about every 30 minutes or one time when cleaning each floor in the house.

It was my thought they are there to catch materials that really should not be vacuumed up like plaster dust, flour, fireplace ash. All things I would never use ANY vacuum to pick up -bagged,bag less or water filter.

I can tell you my 18 year old Rainbow has given me no repairs in all those years and the exhaust is still as clean as when new. Of all the vacuums I have ever used,it is the only one that never has any odor, smell and it keeps the air flow and suction as you are cleaning.

I still say they are NOT for everyone. Some users want an upright that can go through the middle of the room. The Rainbow is more time consuming to use because of the tools and hose, but I need that ability with a dog in the house and hardwood floors .

I really like the concept of REMOVING the dirt from the house every time I use the machine. I don't store dirty dishs or dirty clothes so why would I want to clean the house and then store the filth form the street in a closet. Every time you are using a clean machine with full suction and air flow.

I would like to try a Hyla sometime.

Rainbow

I still say a cental vac is the best ! you get your moneys worth ! Some brands like Aqua air and drain vacuum use water to flush the filth down the drain by it self like a toliet and never have to clean out a nasty bowl like with the rainbow and others ! And the will last longer and dont have to worry about cleaning it every second . If i lived in house i wouldnt waste my money on another vacuum again becuase this would really be the last vacuum i would would buy and unlike the rainbow the Aqua air cental vac is metal not plastic it will be there the next person that moves in . And will increse the value of my home. Also i think its metal but even if it not its still the best investment.

Who Likes Rainbows

Andy,

I have a D4c also. It is a beautiful style and all Rainbows work the same to me. My D4c is very quiet too. I have heard the early E Series were noisy  but on the new E2 Black they have added a thick helmet of insulation and it is very quiet in operation plus the new power nozzzle design is much quieter.

You might want to give one of the new Black E2 Series a try sometime. The only reason I bought a new one was because of the new features of the Hurricane motor, new dolly and new power nozzle with the lighted base and led lighting.  I also found the new design of the water basin to be much easier to empty. It is hard to beat the durability of the old chrome machines.

I was just emailing with a Rexair expert yesterday and he was telling me my old SE and the first E series pulled about 60-65 water lift and the new Rainbow pulls 95 with the Hurricane motor. Because the Rexiar's never lose suction or air flow it's hard to tell the difference except when you put your hand over the end of the hose.

It's funny how we have some vacuums like the old Hoover Convertibles,Electrolux's ,Air-Ways that seem to just run and run and run.

Hi William.

It is a rather funny story how I got my Rainbow. I I think 20 or 21 when I got mine. I was living in my first apartment at the time and the Box Kenmore Canister Vacuum that a friend of mine gave me for a apartment warming gift was on it's last legs and I needed something. I was looking through the local newspaper classifieds and saw a add for a Rainbow Vacuum for $300.00. I called the number and reached a dealer who was going into his retirement and was trying to get his inventory cleared out. He came down the next day. He brought the origional attachments and a extra power nozzle and hose and a extra third hose and shampooer. This vacuum looked like it was brand new and still had the stickers on it and I asked about it. He said that is had not been used and had been sitting in his basement in corner forgotten about. The technology had since changed with the different styles of hoses and he showed me. The hoses that actually went with the vacuum were the ones with the one long cord strapped to the outside of the hose and plugged into the main unit, and the second hose was the one with the pistol grip? with internal cords. I tried both and the origional hose was actually more comfortable than the newer hose. I liked the machine and I bought it on the spot.

For the price of $300.00 I got the vacuum and shampooer, a third hose for the shampooer and wet pickup, the 4 quart water tank, the sprayer (which I have never used)and some Rainbow Scents and rug shampoo. I have never in the lifetime that I have had it never in a million years had any problems with it at all and it still looks like I bought it yesterday maybe a couple of scuffs here and there but all the same it has been a very very good investment.

See, i really like the look of the new rainbow! New dolly, active edge cleaning (REALLY like that idea!)

The e2 that i own, the things that i dont like are the pump style handle, i have big hands and find it uncomfortable to hold. The power nozzle is awful, really cumbersome and uncontrolable. As in you can twist your wrist either way and the big numb power nozzle carrys on going forward.. I dont understand the point in that. I like sturdy!

Does anyone know what the water lift is on the e2? My DC07 has LOADS more suck..

Yeah I don't like pump style nozzle/handles. They have always been uncomfortable to me. That was why I went with the older style hoses.

Who likes Rainbows?

Andy,

You got a great deal and that machine will be running years from now. They did change the shape and feel of the new hose handle and you can now either have it locked on or off or still run when squeezed.

I never liked those huge gas pump handles like the Kenmores,Hoover and Filter Queen either. I don't even really like the one on my Electrolux Epic 8000. Of course that is just a personal preferance of mine.

Shaun,

I was just talking to a Rainbow expert yesterday and was told on a digital water lift scale it will pull 95-96.

I think my Dyson Dc07 does have more suction at the end of the hose but it is so hard to use the hose. The machine keeps falling over and I don't like the brush roll on my DC07 or messing with the dirt cup. I do love the Dyson tools and design.

I have the DC23 which I like except messing with the dirt bin and it has a short hose and cord but great suction.

Post# 156268 , Reply# 21   10/21/2011 at 14:21 (4,569 days old) by baglessball ()

Have you got the DC23 motorhead? If the DC07 had that brushroll id be a happy boy! Im always on the look out for a brushroll that could be modifed to fit the DC07!

I never really have problems with my 07 falling over with tool use.

and when emptying a dyson my advice would be to put the bin in the, so far that you can control the flap to drop slowly! the seperate the clear bin, dont take it of though! twist the cyclone one way and the bin the other as the flap is opening. click it back together and as you lift the dysons bin/cyclone out close the lid on the edge of the bin, so you dont have to touch it. Quick wipe with a damp cloth and back to dysoning!

Does that make any sense?

We have a Rainbow E2 we bought on Ebay years ago. I don't like the powerhead either, it seems to be too flexible in it's movement.

We have 4 large dogs and we find that even if we vacuumed three times a week the water reservoir clogs up in a very short time. Plus the suction is not all that great.

What we do like about it is we run it after house cleaning with either the Pine or Fresh Air scented Rainbow scents. It makes the house smell nice.

We switched to a Miele about 6 years ago for our daily driver vac.

Who Likes Rainbows?

Joel,

I am not sure about the water lift on the previous machines. I know the first E Series had about the same as my SE. I would assume that after they went to the brush less motor they would be the same. I think the BIG difference is in the new power nozzle which it better sealed and has 60% increase in air flow. You can tell the first time you use it that it has much better air flow.

Allen,

I have never used the power nozzle from the E Series or the E2. I know I did not like the power nozzle that was on my SE. It too big and bulky and flipped flopped when you went from one surface to the next. It must have cleaned ok because I never got much dirt when I followed it with my Kirby or one of my Hoovers uprights.

You can tell a big difference with the new power nozzle. It is so easy to use and the handle stays up. I like the led lighting and the revolving corner brushes get so close to chair legs and around furniture. It is also much quieter. Of course it is much nicer to be able to change to the floor brush and use the same hose and the all direct connections are an improvement over my old SE and I like the fact they changed the design of the hose handle. Now the power nozzle can be locked on or off or you can set it to be used like a trigger which is nice if you are cleaning small throw rugs. Also has the suction control right by your thumb.

Whirlcool, these are my thoughts exactly! If the machine had super suction and a sturdy feel to it I wouldn't at all mind dumping the dirty water after every room! It just seems that everything on him is hardwork, unfortunately!

I had a boxador and a yellow lab and so I had lots of pet hair all the time. Durring shedding season I usedthe 4 quart tank which made the cleaning easier and I could get more done that way and didn't have to refill as often. I could usually get the whole house cleaned in one or two fillings of water. I also would vacuum two or three times a week also just to help keep the animal hair down which helped. I never had a problem with the sepertor or the tank clogging.

..

The thing that gives rainbow their ability is airflow! I have heard people say before that air flow cleans, not suction. For example, I have an SE with the box style PN and it doesn't have the greatest suction, but I know it is getting my carpet clean because of the huge amount of sand and grit in the water. That airflow really helps it clean deep down. The box power nozzles have awesome airflow as well, making the original SE a PHENOMENAL vacuum. But starting with the SE performance edition with the newer style power nozzle, the airflow was choked off in the airpath behind the brushroll. It also didn't have good seals. As a further experiment to this, I used my Se with the box Power nozzle and if I lifted the front on the corner of my area rug, it lifted the whole corner of the rug up! I used the same machine with the PE nozzle and that one wouldnt even lift the rug the slightest bit. Those "performance" power nozzles were rainbows problem from the SE PE up until the E2 blue/platinum. But with the latest model, the problems have been fixed with the power nozzle, so they once again have a power nozzle that actually makes use of the machine's amazing airflow.

Sorry guys, I looked at our Rainbow again and it's a Rainbow SE machine. I looked at a photo of an E2 and that's definitely not what we have.

Yes, the power nozzle could be better. When you push it forward it flip flops side to side a little. Could a new power head be used on a SE? Maybe that will solve the problem.

Where can I get the 4 qt water pan? That coupled with a new power nozzle may make this machine more usable.

What's the model number of the latest powerhead that will work with an SE?

Who likes Rainbows?

Allen,

I had the SE for 18 years. Mine was and still is a very good machine but you should check out the Rainbow web site and take a look at the new machine. So much more user friendly. That is the only reason I bought a new machine.

The new dolly,Hurrican motor and compleley redesigned power nozzle really make a big difference.

I have had mine 5 months and NOT ONE TIME has the new power nozzle fell over. The new water pan design is much easier to empty. I know JUST what you are saying about the SE but you are still trapping the dirt and filth not just redistributing it around the room. Check out the web site and let us know what you think.

Post# 156480 , Reply# 33   10/22/2011 at 20:17 (4,568 days old) by whirlcool ()

I looked at the Rainbowsystem website. The new machines sure have been updated, haven't they? My aunt has a D2 (the chrome dome) that she has had since the 70's.
Compare the new ones to THAT!

I like the way they look. The powerhead looks much sturdier than the one I have.
I like the LED lights on it. Isn't this the first Rainbow power head with lights?

I saw the fragrances, but I didn't see the big bottle of the clean smell stuff. We used to buy it at a Rainbow dealer before they went out of business. It was kind of a bluish color fluid. When you put it in the Rainbow water your house would smell hospital clean.

Has the motor been increased in power?

Who Likes Rainbows?

Allen,

They still make the deordorizer but now it is called "clean air". Also the water lift has been increased from about 65 on my old SE to 95 on my new machine. It is a difference you can feel at the hose hose end but the thing with the Rainbow has always been the constant air flow. I have several vacuums with very strong suction but are not really that good at cleaning.

I have seen so many people try and use a machine with a clogged bag but it still pickes up the surface litter and fluffs the rug nap so they assume the rug is clean.

I have used one of my most powerful machines that gets very high ratings by consumer reports and has tremendous suction at the hose end but  it just pushes the dirt around and you end up having dust on the blinds, end tables  although it makes the carpet look great.

So much depends on what type of flooring you have and how you use and care for your machine and no one "best" machine in all applications. In my case ,I am  very sensitive to dust and I just hate buying bags and every time I use my Rainbow it is removing the dirt from my house and I don't have to store that filth in a closet.  Rainbow is not the right sweeper for everyone and I would be the first to admit that fact.

I think that it is interesting that in today's world a company has made so many "user" improvements. So many times today you buy a new appliance and all you see are cost cutting and cheaper made products. Almost every thing they have done with the new machine is an improvement over my old SE.

The carpet in our house is a deep pile. And we have a lot of tile too. Our Miele seems to handle this well.

Our Rainbow didn't really clog up (the separator never got dirty) but the dog hair and other stuff turned the water to mud in no time. That's what I meant by clogging up. I'll look out for a 4 qt pan for ours.

It seems that Rexair isn't given to fads. The Rainbow machine itself isn't changed all the often. It appears that they only change things on it when needed.

How much are the new Rainbows going for?

Power nozzles...

Is there a place where we can see pictures of the different Rainbow power nozzles? I picked up a used one today and I don't have the faintest idea which one it is. I would guess it's from the early 80's - quite wide, rectangular, with woodgrain print on top. It's kinda floppy.

I'll look closer when I'm at to see if there's info on it or post a picture later.

Some info about the various models...

I did some research and found some good info about Rainbows at the linked site. It gives info about the various models including water lift numbers. Worth a look!

Rainbow

I wouldnt spend my money On one . I would rather spend less on a cental vacuum and have a better vacuum then a rainbow! . In a cental vacuum you have better filteration and a better made product.

I like central cleaning systems as well but for some peopel they just wouldn't be a easy investment. People who have to move all the time for work or what ever reasons or those who live in apartments it would be rather hard to get a hold of a central vacuum and so they would have to go with a portable unit. It's all in preference.

I use my kenmore powernozzle on my 2 speed Rainbow. I wonder it cleans better if i use with D4c pn than kenmore pn.

Who Likes Rainbows

Hey guys,

Don't forget to use your Rainbow to do the fall clean up of the screened porch. It is wonderful . I use the Rainbowjet to scrub both the screen porch rugs and the cement floor. Also use the Rainbow sprayer to spray the plants with insecticide before I bring them inside for the winter.

When I use the Rainbow concentrate it only takes one cap full and I can scrub the 10X12 cement floor and pick up the scub water.

Only have to empty the basin one time as the floor cleaner is very concetrated. Because the tool turns 360 degrees the hose never binds up and it has a scrub brush on one side and you flip it over for the squeegee.

When you are done I empty the basin and then pick up up 2 quarts of clear hot water and that cleans the wands ,hose and basin. Nothing could be easier or faster.

It even removed some green mold on the rugs where plants had sit during the summer.

who likes Rainbows?

This small squeegee tht fits on the fabric tool is also handy to do the windows. I use the sprayer to wet thew windows down with cleaning solution and then the sqeegee to pick up the water. It works so fast and no wasted paper towels.

If you have an older model Rainbow you can use the squeegee attachment to clean the cement floor but you use the spayer to dispense the cleaning solution first. The new Rainbowjet is self contained with its own pump and you control the flow of the cleaning solution  with the 3 -way off/on trigger.

At some point I think I'm going to get the new PN and hose for my Gold 2 speed.

As far as I know, it's basically the same machine (except for the LED lit basin)and design change.

I've always thought my Rainbow had good suction. I mean, if I'm using my 14 foot non electric hose and I'm vacuuming a cat blanket or something, it tries to inhale it. It may to have water lift in the 140's, but it still has really good suction IMO. With a proper PN, great cleaning : D

I mean the current PN I have is OK, it still picks up dirt/sand/cat hair so it's doing something.
