I have a Dial-A-Matic model U6039-030 that has a very rough sounding transmission and thought about using a transmission from a Concept in its place.

Last night after I had dissembled both vacuums; I noticed the Concept one transmission would not fit into the Dial-A-Matic. The Concept’s transmission has a little nub that sticks out. The nub prevents the front of the Dail-A-Matic from pivoting (or self-adjusting to the carpet).

The Concept’s transmission has a plastic housing, whereas the Dail-A-Matic’s transmission has a metal housing. The Dial-A-Matics seem to be built better than the Concepts.

It’s a shame that the transmissions are not interchangeable and Hoover’s Power Drives are no longer available.

It is a shame, but they had to be adapted slightly from machine to machine in order to fit new designs. They also made them lighter by using plastic housings, rather than metal housings. Very early on, those transmissions were serviceable. But it was deemed that they were too difficult to work on in the field... they just took too long to work on and there were too many parts. I'm sure you'll find another SP DAM that will be able to spare a transmission for your cleaner.

Actually, the transmission sounds a little better, after some use. I really like the Dial-A-Matic it may not be the best carpet cleaner, but they are so easy to use with the tools. I replaced the brush strips and it does seem to groom the carpet well. On mine the bag check light indicator melted, so the bag check light is always on.

I have that same model in mint cond. with all attachments and manual. Great machine! Although the transmission on my machines is rough as well, and it jerks back really hard while vacuuming too.

Power Drive failure

Sadly,

The transmission / power drive locked up over the weekend. It keeps burning through power drive belts. It's like pushing a brick without the power drive, and I have to keep holding down the manual drive button. Hopefully, I'll find another donor Dial A Matic soon. It's really not a bad vacuum; despite from what I've heard other people say.
