I have an 0700 Vitavac from the 90's, which I inheirited from my grandfather. He was a lover of well-made metal machines and tried to set the family up with household accessories that would last forever. Alas, I found I cannot replace the unraveling power hose since Vitavac is discontinued. Airways, their manufacturer, has closed their doors.

I have taped the hose with every kind of tape under the sun to no avail, it has continued to split in spirals down the coil. The tape then leaves gooey waystations between the coil for monstrous dustballs to congregate within the hose...which leads to stripping, unclogging, and yet more taping!

I am sure vacuum lovers can understand my reluctance to part with this well made machine, as my dear aunt says "can suck the chrome off a bumper" - so does anyone know of a comparable hose from another manufacturer that I can purchase and use on my machine?

The VitaVac has a 1 1/4" pipe from the canister to connect the hose to. The electical prongs to plug into the machine are 5/16" apart (center to center). I was looking at an ELECTROLUX replacement hose with power cords at both ends for models prior to 1205. I would have to rig up a gasket to connect the metal end of the hose to the canister. Any advice?

blank hoses with electrical connections you just have to remove your ends and put them on the new hose. Go visit a local vacuum shop they can help you .

Thanks kibryloverdan for the advice! I'll visit vac shops this weekend!

Nice to know there are other vitavac lovers out there - none of my friends have ever seen one!

I've made electric hose substitutions between brands before. So long as the fittings may be disassembled, it's fairly easy. Usually, it involves Kenmore or Hoover 1-1/4 inch hoses. The Kenmore/Panasonic hoses typically have snap-fit ends; the older (60's-70's) Hoover hoses have a little rivet in each fitting that hold the collars in place. The rivet is easy to get out; just hold a soldering pencil tip on it for a minute or two and the heat will cause it to back right out of the plastic.

I don't usually fool around with hoses that have sealed ends. You can use these, but it involves cutting off the fittings, which shortens the hose a bit.
