New apartment and maybe a new vacuum cleaner. My Grandma never allowed anything but a Electrolux or my Rainbow in her house to be used on her floors, carpets, and other cleaning so I was thinking of giving my Rainbow a break and following in my Grandma's footsteps for a little bit. Does anyone have one of these?

a Lux 4000 with tools on board which Aerus discontinued , I have a Blue and white the previous Legacy & Guardian`s, I also have a Discovery II , I love all of Aerus uprights plus the Canister Line up to the Guardian , I dont like the newest canister Guardian Ultra as I think it is just a glorified classic .

I had one looked like that in 89? It worked great, loved it. Just preferred the Silverado canister. I think my roommates mother killed that upright in about a year, she was rough on things. Fantom was next I know. Now she has my old, got for free, loaned to the kids for 5 years! Kenmore Progressive. Damn, that could clean. I think I paid $300? for that Montgomery Wards Lux Upright. Tan maybe? It seemed very well made to me, hose port was handy, pretty quiet.

I've never been a upright person myself. I've always liked canisters as I'm a person who uses my vacuum for everything, going up the walls and along the ceiling knocking cobwebs, dusting lampshades, cleaning furniture, the sliding glass door and french door tracks you get the idea. Uprights always just kinda seemed kinda clunky to me so I've alwasy had a canister it just seems to work better for my needs. However I alwasy liked the one my grandma had and it was a good vacuum and I didn't mind using it.

This one to me seemed very much to be a canister with a different bottom! I thought it split the difference between the upright and canister better than most. Bag was a cinch I remember, and as I say, hose port very handy. Wish I still had mine.

I agree on the canister part!

I have a bunch of uprights, but rarely use them, if money were no object,I like the Sebo air belt or a Miele....but since I dont have any new cleaners, for heavy cleaning my Silverado or PrincessII work just fine LOL!

Andy, the Lux is one of my favorite looking uprights. It looks to be at peace and it is special to me as my aunt had a Discovery II growing up. Your cleaning needs would not be met with that upright, though. The suction motor is significantly smaller than a full sized canister vac's motor. With all of the above floor cleaning that you prefer to do, I would suggest a nice canister with a long hose and power nozzle.

I'm thinking I may just stick with my Rainbow. At this point my cleaning is cut down a lot since I had to rehome my dogs since the move and so it's just me and my hedgehog (Basil) so it's not likeI have to vacuum everyday like I used to. I'm really in no hurry at this point and it was just a good idea. Well time for me to start getting my kitchen unpacked. Have a great day everyone!!!

I've owned an Electrolux Discovery II, an Epic 3500, and Lux 3000 upright, and they are great vacuums. However if you have deep pile carpet, they arent the best deep cleaning units.

The new Guardian upright does have a new and improved more powerful motor, but I have not used one yet. Check out this thread about the new Lux upright, it will provide you with some more information.

New Aerus Guardian Upright

sleepdoc's profile picture
I have one. I bought it a few months ago and love it. The suction motor on the new model pulls 394 air watts. The canisters pull 439. The Epic uprights pulled 200 (or 250, I can't remember) and the Lux 4000 increased the airflow by 50 air watts to either 250 or 300. You won't be disappointed by the new Guardian.

Seriously, my fave would have to be an Electrolux 2100. Find a good used one or rebuild one. Can't beat the old lux for filtration and durability.

Choice for Modern Vacuum Cleaner

I recently purchased new vacuums for my personal residence and the Estate Residence that I manage in South Florida. I have always been a fan of Electrolux. However, the new models are terrible. They have great performance, but are cumbersome, clunky, do not have user friendly attachments, and are very noisy. The new S5 series from Miele is hard to beat. Our Housekeepers love them. Quiet, powerful, easy to use, great attaachments, and a reasonable price. Maybe one day, Aerus will realize that they are no longer the leader and are fast losing ground to the Germans. I do not represent Miele or any other vacuum company. Just someone that uses vacuums daily and needs one that adapts to my needs. The new Aerus models do not.
A great day to all,
Richard

I thank you all. After careful consideration I just decided to keep my Rainbow and continue to use it. I figured I would just put the money I would have bought for a new vacuum in my vacation fund to Saint Thomas next year. At this point I think my sanity is a better investment!!!

Richard I have to respectfully

disagree , I have used Aerus/Electrolux all my life and love the Uprights . I have a Miele S7 and I think it is too bulky and heavy to use. I also don`t like tool`s onboard. I used to be a Miele dealer and prefer the canisters to any upright they make. Dan

Get a pair of high performing vacs! Upright = Hoover Tempo, Canister = Electrolux UltraSilencer Green! Two of the easiest vacs I have ever used, and lots of "suck for the buck!"....The pair will cost you under $500 including tax and bags....

:-)

I must also respectfully disagree

The Miele cannister vacuums surpass the new Aerus vacuums in every way. The new S5 Miele vacuums have excellent power, filtration, easy functionality, and most important at the Estate, the Miele cannisters are very quiet. So quiet that you can here the telephone ring. So quiet you can answer the phone with the vacuum running, not that you would want to have a conversation with the vacuum on.
I come from a family that only used Electrolux cannister vacuums. They were always the best. When it came time to replace vacuums, even my relatives have purchased Miele cannister vacuums. We have all been very disappointed with Aerus Electrolux in the past ten years. Aerus should look to the past and build a modern vacuum with all the features and functionality of the Olympia and Silverado series. Of course, with HEPA filtration and quiet but powerful motors.
Stay well,
Richard

And thats why we all have

kirbyloverdan's profile picture
so many different brands of machine`s to choose from. I personally loved the older Miele`s as the Aluminium and the Silvermoon and Bluemoon each I own . I beleive they are the last of Miele`s best built machines. I gifted my sister an S5580 Aquarius Miele for her Birthday and she has had it for 3 months and it is falling apart . She had to go back to her Aerus Guardian that`s 5 years old and her Silvermoon which is like brand new and it`s from 2008 . My entire family love`s German products and we all drive German cars only . The vacuum my family still chooses is Aerus . My family has been using Electrolux / Aerus for over 75 years and I can`t get them to switch .I love Kirby as my #1 favorite but Aerus is my #2 choice then Hoover Convertibles followed by Rainbow .

If I were to change my mind and get a new vacuum...

rainbowd4c's profile picture
It would be a hard call to make. I have had my Rainbow since 1998 and I love it and there is nothing wrong with it. I'm in no way a collector, I don't have the room and looking at the collections that I have seen this would be a very costly hobby. My vacuum collection is the following, my Rainbow D4C, Hoover Floor Mate, and my Bissell Spot Bot. All three I use and all three serve a purpose.

I have been looking for a while thinking about a new vacuum and the thing is nothing on the market really catches my eye, except for the Electrolux Aerus. I think that I like more the older vacuums that are no longer on the market and if I decide to go a head and buy a new one it would maybe be something I find off Ebay. Who knows.

I too,USED to be a Lux Guardian owner-The thing was clunky-just looked "cheap" to me and NOISEY-was like running a B-52 engine in your living room. The salesman simply said-"You can get used to the noise-the motor is more powerful,so it is noiser than our other models"and the filter on top of the canister kept popping off.Traded it in toward a MEILE-so much better-more powereful, easier to use, better made,QUIETER,better filtration.Honestly "Lux should ditch the Guardian design and go back to their roots.the older metal body machines with quieter motors.Kirby is my favorite-but use a canister instead of the Kirby hose.Right now I am putting my Rainbow E2B thru its paces.always been a fan for Kirbys,Rainbow,TriStars as DTD vacs. Now Meile and Sebo are other favorites.

Lux Guardian

I wouldn't EVER touch it! I'll take a Commemorative Edition Ultralux or any steel tank Lux any day.

@floor-a-matic

Do you own a Commemorative Edition Ultralux?  If you do, Im very jealous, there arent many out there.  If I could find one I would buy it in a heart beat!  One of my most favorite Electrolux tanks, aside from the Commemorative Edition, is the metal UltraLux Classic, the blue body with the beige and chrome trim is in my opinion one of the very best looking Electrolux tanks made, certainly the best 1521 body style right behind the brown Marquis :)    I remember being a young kid going into the Lux dealer and staring at the large poster they had on the wall of the UltraLux Classic (this was shortly after they stopped making them), and aside from its beauty its an iconic machine being the last metal bodied canister Electrolux ever made.
