I second the motion! Although not too many people like them over there, I happen to love them. They are great deep-cleaners and are easy to maintain. Even better is they use much less electricity than their successors.
You have two choices: The first is to pay $100 to get a new soft-cover commercial model. If you pay another hundred you can get a hard-cover model with tools. The downside is that they are made in Mexico by TTI, unlike the older household models made in the USA, and that they only come in black. I've never liked gray or black anything. The second choice is to go to thrift stores and find a used one. They are not too hard to find, but they normally need some work such as a new belt or brush roll, and of course a new type A bag. I personally like the soft-cover 1990s Elite II-type models. They come under all sorts of names: Decade, Preferred, Convertible, Soft-Guard, Breath Easy, Soft and Light, Encore and lots others. If you are lucky, you might find a bagless Elite from the early 2000s, or even better a Hoover Caddy Vac, which has a removable tool caddy. With any one of these models, with good parts, you will be very happy with. Sadly, the last Elites are nearing the end of their life-span, about 10 years. I think they ended production of household models around 2003-2004ish. Nathaniel |

Thank you! What do you think would be a reasonable price for a used one? |

strong, yet, not my favorite! People recently have been literally delivering them to my door... in various conditions. While I was away, a green Elite was placed on my porch. Not sure if it even runs.. If you were closer, I'd just give it to you, or one from the basement. I also have a U.S. one, right out of the box, and, one mint one from a convent. (don't ask). There WAS a great CONVERTIBLE "Elite", too. If you could get your hands on one of THOSE........... |

In my last post, I said a name of an Elite was "Breath Easy", but it's Breathe Easy, sorry.
For the price, I personally would never pay more than $30 for an Elite at a thrift store. Just make sure to turn it on before you buy. Many Elites die from a broken fans, and that might be the reason it is at the thrift store in the first place. Check the brush roll too; if it's too worn you'll have to invest another $20 in a brush roll. $30, good parts and sound, and you got yourself a great vacuum! |
