HOORAY! I'm almost finished restoring my TriStar CXL 2-speed! After 25+ yrs of use (my parents bought it new) I have replaced the vacuum motor's carbon brushes & yet to put in a new PN motor. I also just got a new electrified hose; the original is beat-up (ripped at the machine end almost all the way & held with tape) Can I put in a geared belt motor or should I stick with a flat belt motor?

I'm so happy to own a TriStar; I will never use anything else (other than the vacs I currently own) as a daily driver.

Here's the hose I recently won from eBay.

Regarding the PN motors, if it has a flat belt motor, use a flat belt replacement motor, the geared version has some electronics that go with the geared setup to prevent it from tearing the belt to shreds if the brushroll is jammed or the motor is overloaded, if you just went and put in the geared motor (and corresponding brushroll) alone, then you could end up causing damage to your PN...

Parts and peripherals are available from Tristar (The Comapcts to DXL seem to come under the EX20 category), saves messing about with ebay auctions:

Very cool to own a one-family from new vac! When did Compact/Tristar go to the two-speed motors, does anyone know?

This TriStar isn't the only one family vac I own, I also own several others that my parents, siblings or I bought new.

TriStar vacs w/2-speed motors were from 1982-85. I wish TriStar still use 2-speed motors on all the later mdls.
