Today's POD made me wonder, What ever happened to the old brands. Apex, seems like a cool machine, I have never seen one in person. What happened to them, and when did they stop production?

Lewit? Same, never seen on in real life.

Can't think of others right now, so please add their history and info if you know it.

you know what....

harley i know what you mean.....

I have NEVER seen a Apex or a Lewit , or even barley see GEs or premiers here either.....and no JCPennys or Wards very often, seems like everyone bought name brands, like hoover or Eureka, but never bought the top of the line models....like i see a lot of blender motor F&G Eurekas but i never see high end rugulater or Cordaway madels......and Hoovers, i see the mostely low end promo or mid range Convertibles......and same for Concepts and Elites.....but if people did want something high end.....the always seemed to think that a Kirby or a Electrolux was the way to go.....

Apex.....

Apex was purchased by the White Sewing Machine Co. in the late 50s becoming White-Apex Co. they discontinued vacuums in the early 60s, 63 I think. One reason they are no more is that they were VERY expensive, A Strato Cleaner was 150. 00 when a Lux was 89.00 in 57.

Harley, I have a brochure for Lewyt, from when they were re-formed in the late 1990's by SMC Home Products Corp, which is a large producer of ceiling fans. They state in the company's history & timeline, that Lewyt left the vacuum world in 1993. And if memory serves correct, they were reformed around 1997-1998, but left again in 2003.

We used to see Lewyt's all the time here in Canada, they were very popular. Of course, that's changing though with each passing year, as more of them go to vacuum cleaner heaven....
