Saw the episode today where Hazel is using a burgandy colored Electro Hygiene to vacuum the "Baxter's" living room.
Its from 1962, the episode is called "Hazel's Pajama Party",,she throws a PJ party at the Baxter's for a neighbor girl who dosent have a family.
Hazel is cleaning up the livingroom for the party with the Electro Hygiene.
She is using the carpet nozzle, and S wands, hooked up to the burgandy criss cross pattern hose and is actually using the machine, you can tell its not a fake vacuum sound. I didnt know those machines were THAT quiet!

Super sleuthing, Brian. Thank you. That surely is a Modern Hygiene and they really are that quiet, I can tell you.

I did some more digging:

Season 1, Episode 26: Hazel's Pajama Party
Original Air Date—5 April 1962
Hazel organizes a pajama party for a motherless girl.

Interesting that the upscale Baxters use a Modern Hygiene in 1962; that model was introduced in 1949 and it's doubtful it was still in production. One would expect the Baxters to have something newer and modern. Maybe the back story is that it was Dorothy's - Mrs. B - Missy - Mom's M-H that she brought to the marriage.

Thanks for that spectacular screen capture of Hazel, I have the first season in black and white, with the exception of one episode filmed in color (maybe #14) when she gets a color tv set. Then of course by the '62/'63 season, they started filming in color. Also, (please correct me if I'm wrong) it seems as if there is an Electrolux in use as well.

BrianKirbyClass, it sounds as if you have a colorized first season DVD, that's neat!

I have the first season of "Dennis The Menace" and the Roll-Easy makes three appearances! One being when Henry tries to replace the switch on it.

I remember another episode where Hazel is using a Lux XXX, and yet another when if I remember correctly she got a new-fangled vacuum (a prop shop-made rectangular box slipped over a XXX with several power control buttons on the top)  She was raving over the new machine, miss-judged the power on high speed and a comedic moment ensued.  Does anyone remember which episode that was?

That's very cool, but it's a MODERN HYGIENE, not an ELECTRO-HYGIENE. (I was wondering when you said a burgandy Electro-Hygiene.)

I have a feeling this machine was part of one of the TV studio prop departments because it's showed up other times as well. Below is a crummy screen shot, but it's from the mid-1960s show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. When you watch the skit you can clearly see that it's a Modern Hygiene.

Henry200, yes, i have that episode you are talking about on an old VHS tape,,its in with a million others, so i dont know which one exactly, but i do remember seeing it several times. Its later in the series, i know that episode is in color.

Dave,Charles, looks like the Modern Hygiene is a beast of a machine to drag around,,is it as heavy as it looks? Is it a Royal made machine? Could the fact that it was on runners scratch a polished wooden floor? I remember my Grandma was always affraid of that whenever i would vacuum for her back in the day,,"DONT marr up MY FLOORS with that vacyum!" ( she always called it the "vacYUM")

You would think as much carpet and as much money as the Baxter's seem to have,(by early 1960s standards anyway) they would at least have a new Kirby for poor Hazel to schlep around the house! Or at least a new Hoover Convertible!

Arh,,i will have to watch for that Roll Easy in Dennis the Menace!
We are now getting a channel on our cable system called Antenna TV,,has alot of the old 60s and 70s sitcoms.
A couple of episodes of "Maude" from the early 1970s ive seen a vac or 2,,in one early episode Maude is using a mid line Eureka canned ham with the floor nozzle, (not using the Vibra Beat, darn it),,and in a later Episode Maude's maid "Mrs Naugatuck" is using a mid 70s yellow Hoover Convertible. Either an Estate, or Deluxe? Its not one of the bol models.
Infact, i think in the episode where Mrs N. passes away, the ashes are delivered to Maude's house, and of course she spills them all over the carpet/floor,,and vacuums them up with the Hoover. Havnt seen that episode in yrs, but i think thats right.

Roll Easy

A Roll Easy also made at least one appearance on Father Knows Best.

I know Tony Nelson had a Roll Easy on "I Dream of Jeannie." Infact there are at least 2 episodes featuring the Roll Easy. I know one of them is when Tony's mother comes to stay and has a fight with the vacuum.
There is also an episode where the "Blue Djinn" (The HEAD genie) gets trapped in a Hoover Dial A Matic,,and the whole thing gets thrown in the ocean. In the last scene, the DAM comes rolling out of the ocean, onto the beach by itself. lol,,there's soemthing you dont see every day!

Neil - that's the only Hazel vac episode I remember!!!!! To this day I often thought I was only dreaming I had seen such an episode with a really weird "monster vac" the size of a clothes trunk! And I do indeed remember the thing exploding or blowing up or something like that.....wish we could find a YouTube clip of that scene to set my frazzled memory at ease.... :-)

LOL,,me too, i though maybe i had dreamed it too,,,but i just happen to capture it on video one time.
In the mid-late 1980s, a local TV station was re-running all of the old Hazel episodes. Since it was one of my favorite TV shows, i would set my VCR to record it every day while i was at work. I KNOW i have that episode on VHS,,where Hazel wrestles with the monster vac and all H breaks loose, of course. I know the scene takes place in the Baxter's entryway, right infront of the staircase. I think the episode revolves around Hazel buying the vacuum because she feels sorry for the salesman, who is down on his luck (come to find out), and of course Mr Baxter is miffed that the vacuum was too expensive, and then blows up.

BTW, there are several "Our Miss Brooks" episodes on some of my old VHS tapes that i set the VCR to record,,it came on right after Hazel at the time.
There is an episode where Even Arden (Connie Brooks) is vacuuming with a mid 1950s Lewyt Big Wheel,,,infact she pulls it clear across the livingroom, and it goes sailing after her. I have seen this episode within the last 5 yrs, so its fresh in my memory.

OMG!!!!! Brian....you MUST dig out that VHS tape with Hazel's monster vac!!!! And post it on YouTube right away!!!!

I remember the scene exactly as you do!!!! The thing blows up right near the entry hall next to the staircase!!!

(I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO grateful for Vacuumland! It's memories like this that make me want to break the bank and come to all the conventions! Who else could I share this bizarre "Hazel Monster Vac" memory with?)

(BTW - how many vac-lovers ARE there named Brian?) :-)

Hazel's monster vac on VHS

I second that motion, Brian!  I would love to see that monster vac episode again.  As far as "breaking the bank" I barely have a penny to my name but still think the price for the convention is the best deal you'll ever find.  I can't wait to meet the members of this crazy Vacuumland gang in-person!

I will try to find that tape, and that episode,,but it will be a huge undertaking,,first finding the actual tape amoung 100s, then finding THE episode, then, how to convert it from old video!
Sounds like a job for a rainy day,,will sure try!

Thank you in advance for your time, Sir Kirby Class!!! Please don't kill yourself trying to find this show.....if Lady Luck is on our side, maybe the episode will magically appear in the first hour or two of your search! *fingers crossed* :-)

Yes, too many Brian's as usual! lol

One time when i was in grade school in a class of about 30 kids,,there were SEVEN Brian's! Some were spelled Bryan of course.

The teacher had to name and call us Brian 1, Brian 2, Brian 3,,,ect. that whole year. lol
Poor woman.

Of course that gave us plenty to fight about on the playground,,"Im better than you because im Brian 1, YOU are Brian number 6! HA - kids.
