While it annoys me that manufacturers recycle names for completely different machines (Bissell Big Green, Bissell Pro-lite, Bissell Lift Off, Dirt Devil Broom Vac... Bissell seems to be the least creative) to name a few, I have been quite intrigued by the new Bissell that is an obvious competitor to the Rug Doctor. Has anyone had a chance to try it out yet? I've never been a fan of their regular machines, preferring the Hoovers since I was old enough to know the difference, this new one has me intrigued. I know that Lowes is selling it for more than Wal-mart has the Rug Doctor, I wonder which is truly better. Is it still true that the dirt tank on a Rug Doctor cannot be removed and the whole machine has to be tipped over and dumped out, or have they fixed that by now? I do like that the Bissell has a handle that actually reclines and that it cleans in forward and reverse.... no tipping the machine up on its back wheels to go forward and doing a back stroke only.

What do you guys think?

On a side note, a friend just picked up a Bissell Spot Bot and I got to play with it for the first time. It left the carpet a little wetter than I expected and ran for a really long time.... the suction seemed really weak even at the hose, but it did get the stains out!

I've read nothing but good things about this machine as well.......And yea.....What's up with the Rug Doctor tank not being removable? I'm sure now that Bissell has created this Rug Doctor will change that. What would be even BETTER is if it had smart mix for separate detergent and clean water so that you could rinse.

I rented one from Lowes about a month ago to do the carpets at my Grandmas, the suction was great, however is just seemed a little awkward to use compared to the Rug Doctor. I don't know if it was just because I was use to the rug doctor or what. I did like the fact that the clean water tank was removable to fill up. I never liked the idea of putting clean water in the dirt water container.

I also loved the brush-roll, it did a great job of lifting up the nap on the carpet

Rug Doctor's Tank

The Rug Doctor's in the single unit form factor do not collect the dirty water in the lower tank. The fixed tank is for the clean water, which is drained out by the pump during use or through the hose if you attach it. You can choose to tip the machine over to dump it out if you prefer.

The dirt water is collected in the upper removable white tank.

Speaking from experience and ownership :)

Rick and I saw one of these in a vacuum shop in Bellville IL. They got rid of all the rental rug doctors and are now renting these because they seem to be so much better to ues with more suction and it has a brushroll rather than a brush that goes back and forth. I personally don't know anything about them but if a vac shop switches over to a Bissell then that must tell you something.
