If you recall, I found a Hoover Spirit on Craigslist back at the end of November... It took me a few weeks to dig into it; it all came apart (but I didn't dismantle the motor on this one, it was exceptionally clean) then once I started on it, the holidays happened and life got busy. I finally threw all of the parts in a dishwasher a few weeks ago with a heaping scoop of phosphates... I ran everything through a few times, and it all came out nice and shiny!

Got around to putting it all back together over the past few evenings, and voilà!

This cleaner came with two "straight" wands, and a 6' hose which has the curved hand-grip. I found in my stash of hoses, an unused Spirit hose which matched this cleaner--which was a bit longer, but had the "straight" hose end, like early Spirits and Celebrities had. I then found a curved upper wand in one of my many wand-bins... and now I have a great little machine with a nice, long hose. I love canisters with long hoses. :-)

I don't think the powernozzle on this cleaner was used very much, it's just not scuffed up, at all. It really shines! All that this machine needs is the brush insert for the bare floor tool. The one that was in it was pretty nasty -- I think this cleaner was primarily used for cleaning bare floors. Add it to my next parts order.

I just love how well this little powerhead gets underneath everything!

Doesn't have the 4-brush "quadraflex" brushroll, but it's still very effective!

What a fun little machine Fred, you did a fantastic job on it!  I agree with you, I love a long hose on a canister vacuum.  It makes using it so much easier!  Have fun using it!!

Nice job on that Spirit; it looks all brand new and good to go for many more years. I vaguely recall using what must have been a BOL version of one of those years ago; straight-suction and no cord winder, etc.

You have one of the nicest and cleanest looking vacuum display/storage areas I've ever seen.

You've GOT THE SPIRIT!

Great vacuum Fred. And, yes you indeed have a well-built display to say the least! Where is that neon sign from? Is it custom? I want one. Anyway, love the t-shirt too :) Ron

Wow, what a great job Fred, and a great little machine. Had one back in the 80s, very effective lightweight affordable machine, wish it was still here, for straight suction it did great. Nice powerhead too, lucky guy! Long hose is a really big bonus, as I can attest to with the short one on the Miele, so frustrating. Hope you get a chance to actually use the machine! Beautiful display, guy with it not too bad either!

Oh Veda,

Absolutely beautiful, "rennovation", of the Spirit. You look quite handsome in that shirt too! I've always thought those were great little vacs--kind of like a Dimension less the steroids.

Even with the 2-strip brush roll versus the quad they were great performers. The efficiency of the two motors made it very effective.

I find it interesting that so many of the canister manufacturers used a flat belt for years on the power nozzles. And, still do! Lux was the only one that used a geared belt early on and those belts lasted for years. If all the flat belts had used a geared belt think of how much better they would have been. But, less belts sold means less $$$ to vac stores and manufacturers.

To this day, I think Filter Queen and even Rainbow use flat belts. Who would have thought?

Anyway, love your Spirit and nice job making it look factory fresh!

Charlie

New Rainbow!!!

Charlie, believe it or not the new Rainbow uses a V belt of all things, and has gear driven brushes on each end for edge cleaning!

Fred,

What a wonderful job you did with the Hoover Spirit. I have been trying my hand at detailing some vintage vacuums, but I still have much to learn.

Sincerely,

Bud

Fred..Hoover question??

That Celebrity QS , behind you,..there is a near perfect one at the Habitat store for 15 bucks, no attachments, just Machine and hose, since I know nothing about Hoovers, what is your opinion??

Oh my!

WHY CANT I COME FOR CONVENTION! I need more time and money! Wish you lived closer or I lived up there. Would give anything to come see your amazing machines.

That has to be the best looking used spirit I have ever seen. Just saw a brownish one at the goodwill. Cant hold a candle to that!

Very nice work Fred, the Spirit looks like a cute little canister, maybe someday I'll get around to trying one out.
Love your canister display as well,

Fred - that last photo of you is amazing. The vacs, the display, the T-shirt, and you!!!! Can you please be our "poster-boy" for vac-lovers the world over? *eyelashes fluttering* :-)

Hey guys, Fred's new Spirit is quite a dandy little Hoover!  I saw it last night, along with all the other treasures in the house from basement to attic.  Fred gets my vote for vacuum poster-boy, and he's so gosh darned cute to boot!  (Lucky Robert)

I'm also green with envy on your neon sign. What a great addition to a vac room.

Fred,

That turned out better than great - sometimes you get a cleaner that restores easier than others as far as the finish goes, but this one tops the cake. It really looks like new from the photos. :-)

Great job!!

Enjoy!!

Thanks, Everyone!

I sure gave this new Spirit of mine a workout last Friday... We had out of town company this weekend, and the house got a good cleaning.  I absolutely loved using this cleaner.  My only *tiny* gripe is that it's just kinda noisy.  But other than that, it did a wonderful job!  There's something wonderful about being able to use a cleaner you've put lots of time into!

Thanks, everyone for your nice compliments on the machine!

The neon Hoover sign actually came out of the Hoover store I used to work at in Milwaukee.  When I got word that they were closing, I talked to my old boss and asked for a few things from the store.  I got a few boxes of parts and repair manuals -- and I had also requested this sign.  It needed a new transformer -- which was only like $70, and pretty easy to replace.  I remember when I worked there, every time I walked past that sign on the outside, I thought "ugh, if only I could have one of these..."

While I'd rather the Hoover stores were still around; having the sign to which many memories and 5 wonderful years of employment are attached is a good consolation prize.

Here's the store with the sign in the window from Christmas one year... one of the only shots I have of the outside of the store.

Cool!

That hoover store is almost identical in layout to the one that was hear. Now its just a regular vacuum store, that sells commercial hoovers and riccar.
