My Maternal Grandmother! Bought new..in 1948, a Electrolux XXX complete with cordwinder and polisher, which my Mother and Aunt said they used each and every Saturday to wax and polish the hardwood floors with!!! | ||

My mom's first vacuum was a 1990 Eureka ESP 2011. It was a wedding gift, and she had it for 7 years! That is the longest she has ever owned a vacuum. My dad's first vacuum was a tan JC Penny 'Hoover' with a square headlight. He said that is all he remembers about it, and it was a hand me down from either his parents or his ex wife's parents. But he specifically remembers it being tan, having the big headlight, and saying JC Penny on it. I would love to find out what it actually was!

 Well, I won't say it was a vacuum cleaner my "parents" owned, because I don't EVER remember seeing my Dad use one! However, they were given a new Kirby when they got married in 1953, so I'm assuming it was a Model 513. I vaguely remember it when I was a kid. But the vacuum I remember the most was a green Hoover Convertible. I don't remember it having a headlight, but I do remember that it used the Type C bag. The outer bag had snaps. Those Type C bags were always a mess to change! She finally got a Kirby Classic Omega (which I now own) when I was in Junior High School. I have no idea what happened to that Convertible or her Kirby 513. My Mom is always hard on vacuum cleaners. I see those "torture" tests on Youtube. They're nothing compared to what she does to a vacuum cleaner on a daily basis! | ||

 We lived with my grandmother, and we used her fabulous Hoover Model 28. It's still one of my favorite Hoovers, and a real workhorse. My parents went out and bought a Hoover Model 31 Special in 1959 (no headlight, snap-up vinyl bag). I was sick. My aunt had the DeLuxe Convertible 65 with the headlight and zip-up bag. I bugged my mother for days...."Why didn't you get the NICE Hoover, like Aunt Barbara?" | ||

 The first vacuum my Mom had when I was born was a '50s Kirby 511. God, I wish I had that machine today! She had it until sometime in the '70s when she got a Hoover Convertible U4005 from K-Mart. That machine was so darned plain (blue snap bag, no headlight, no handle grip) that I actually despised it! Now the only thing I have in my collection that's even REMOTELY close to it in plainness (is that a word?) is my 1020 Convertible. Even though I was still kinda young, I didn't hesitate to let my Mom know that there WERE better choices out there. But, at least she bought a Hoover.
She had the 4005 for almost 15 years, and then she began to get my castoffs -- starting with a Panasonic-made Kenmore Whispertone upright (which broke before it could get into my collection), then going to my Miele Powerhouse Plus S174i Upright and finally ending up with my Windsor Sensor SR12. | ||

My mom has told me that my Dad had a some type of an 90s Dirtdevil for awhile, died picking up kitty litter. I'm not certain what it was, but from what I'm told I think it was a Featherlite style machine. Then he got a white first gen Hoover Elite which also died by kitty litter. Then, when they got married in 1996, they went to Target and the got the Hoover Elite we had until 2004. Guess how that one died. Kitty litter! All of these vacuum were 90s machines and bought before I was born in 1997. My family has long vacuum-brand loyalty stories I can tell if anyone is interested.

My parents were married in 1947 but didn't own a vacuum cleaner until a couple years before I was born. Their first vacuum was a factory rebuilt Hoover Special model 700, given to them by a friend in the early 50's. | ||

My parents married on June 6, 1969. But I don't know what vac they had before their marriage. I know sometime after their marriage, while they lived in Plymouth, WA, they had a gold-colored Hoover Slimline canister. They retained this when moving back to P-town in May of 1976.
But on November 7, 1978, my dad got himself into a deal with a Kirby salesman, representing the C & E Kirby Co. located on NE 72nd & Sandy. My mom strongly despised this course of action at the time, insisting the Kirby was old-fashioned-looking (think 1920s to 1940s) but my dad ultimately won out. This meant my parents relinquished the Slimline in favor of the Kirby Classic III, which was the first family vacuum I'd ever known. ~Ben | ||

My parents were married in Feb. 1971. Their first vacuum was a disc shaped Hoover, suction only(don't know what model it was, it was long gone before I started my obsession). It was followed by a Hoover Convertible(also, I don't know the model... for the same reasons as before.) I do know that the Convertible was mom's birthday gift from dad and she did NOT appreciate it. Later came the Kirby Tradition, which mom agreed to buy when dad was out of town(he was a long-haul trucker)and could not object to the purchase.
No wonder they divorced. But the Tradition has lated to this day. Justin | ||

When my parents started living in the flat in 1988, my mother inherited grandma's Tornado TR11 Électronique, then in April 1993 when I was a baby she got a Vorwerk Kobold 121, and the old Tornado came back to my grandparent's house

 My mom's first vacuum was a tank style but I don't know the make or model. It had thick chrome runners, with a pointed black cone shape at each end. The body was greenish/brown I think and cone shaped at each end. The cones were black also. There was a round push button on/off switch right behind the handle, removable cord and the hose inlet and exhaust were at an angle, about 45 degrees. The hose had a screw type connector, was rubber I think, had a straight hose handle as both steel wands were curved. There was a mop like floor tool as well as the standard brush style, rug nozzle, crevice tool, dusting brush and upholstery nozzle. It had a shake out style bag. I don't remember my mom actually owning it but I remember her telling me that she only had it for a very short time and then gave it to my grandmother after she bought a Filter Queen. This would have been in the mid 1950s. I remember my grand parents kept the hose and tools in a large canvas bag under my grandfather's bed and the vacuum was kept in a pillow case, also under the bed (there were no closets in the house). I only got to use the vacuum a few times because then my mom bought my grandmother a Constellation model 86 or 88 (it was light blue in colour) for a Xmas gift. After that my grandparents used the other vacuum just for cleaning out the pipes to the wood stove.

After they got married in 1947, my parents either received as a gift, or bought on their own, a brown General Electric cylinder vac - I think it was close to the Air-Flo AVT 150 models I have seen on the internet. When my fascination with vacs started as a toddler, I would play with the cloth-covered hose and attachments and pretend I was cleaning like Mom!
When my parents bought their turquoise Eureka Automatic Upright (similar to my profile photo but without the cord-reel), it came with a turquoise attachment set. I loved comparing the blue and brown tools from both vacs, and when I noticed that the GE tool set was missing a crevice tool like the Eureka had, I went hunting for a brown crevice tool in all the closets and drawers of the house and garage! Never did find it..... Here's a very very close version of the GE vac:

Exactly! And there would be soot everywhere from when my grandfather dismantled the stove pipes and before he vacuumed them out. I remember him doing it once without telling my grandmother that he was going to do it. Normally she would have covered everything up in the vicinity to protect it from getting covered with the soot. She was so angry when she came home and saw what he was doing. Soot is not easy to clean up.

My Mom had 
a Kenmore canister. I remember it very well. I used to sit on top of it and ride it when she vacuumed. One day the vacuum was out, and I picked up the wands and pretended to be vacuuming. She saw me and snuck up behind me and turned it on. It scared the living hell out of me! Shortly after that my Mom died in a car accident, and my Dad decided to relocate us to Florida, where my Aunt and cousin had moved to. I remember the day the movers came, I pulled the vacuum out of the closet and sat there, refusing to move until I saw them pack it up and put it on the truck. This picture is not the exact model my Mom had, but it is very close. I don't use it for cleaning, but like to just plug it in sometimes and run it, just to hear the sound.

Joe - That's a very sweet story about your Mom and the Kenmore.
Jonathan - Did those 638's have a shake-out bag, or were they Type C paper bag outfitted? I can't remember what they did in England.... Here's an ad I have from long ago. I don't remember where I got it.....It makes reference to a "Disposall" bag. Was that like our Handi-Sac?

My parent's first vacuum was a Hoover 62 with all the attachments. I remember it perfectly. We had it till we got a Hoover Convertible Model 69 with deluxe attachment set in 1965.

My parents married in 1963,first living in a small upstairs apartment. Their very first vacuum was a blue Eureka stick vac. When they moved into a larger house in the late 60s, they bought a Hoover Connie (dust blower),,dont know what model number, but it was yellow and dark tan or taupe?,,had the red Hoover logo underneath the hose inlet.
In 1972 they built a new home with wall to wall plush blue and green sculptured shag. By this time i was vacuum crazy and dreamed of having a Kirby Classic, or Central Vac! Mom then purposely and with intent went WITHOUT ME (knowing how much i wanted to go) to buy a new Hoover Dialamatic Powerdrive at KMart,,dont know what the model # was, but it was cream and tan colored,,with the headlight.(this is still a sore subject between us to this day) The DAM proved to be nothing but trouble, and ended up catching fire and burning a hole in the shag,,right in the middle of the living room. ( i couldnt help but snicker a little over that one!) This was about 1980. (Which by then it was my job to do all of the vacuuming, and had been for several years). I was working and had my own money by this time, and traded the DAM for a used Rainbow D2 with the Eureka style PN. And then traded the Rainbow for a used red Kirby Classic 3 a few yrs later. (was testing and trying to find out which one i liked best) After i left home, They traded the Kirby for an Electrolux upright Discovery 3 (tan model) in 1988,,and then when it went kablooey in around 2000, Dad bought a Hoover Windtunnel power drive that they are still using. Tried talking them into a Kirby again but they hated having to take the head off for attachment use,,ect. Oh well! Thank God for my dear Grandma and her Kirby D50 and new Electrolux Golden Jubilee, that i loved! One of the most exciting times in my whole life was when Grandma bought that new Golden J. She knew it would make me so happy. Something Mom would NEVER have done! (My mother has always dismissed my vacuum obsession as completly rediculous and worthless. She thinks vacuum cleaners are nothing more than GLORIFIED TRASH CANS, and could never understand why i would care so much about something so discustingly rediculous. HA,wasnt easy living with her!) | ||

A fvaorite Aunt and Uncle got a GE Swivel Top (light brown and cream colored) as a wedding present in 1957. It is STILL going strong to this day. They have had a new hose and attachments over the years, and she still uses it for all the above the floor cleaning.
She uses a Hoover Convertible (not sure of the model #),for her carpet, from about 1976-77,,its yellow with the handle grip and has a striped bag,,still going strong,,has had new brush strips and of course a new belt and bag once in awhile,,she still uses it regularly! | ||

My parents were married in June 1949, but it was not until 1957 that they got their first cleaner, when my mother was pregnat with me!
It is a Bylock Electromaid, and it lasted until 1968. This is very much a BOL machine, earlier Bylock cleaners were based on Apex models. It took me quite a long while to find this one, so now very glad to have it Al

I said what my parents had before they met each other. Obviously, there would have been a time when they had the two vacuums in the house, but I'm guessing that wasn't very long. The first vacuum they bought together, was a Dirt Devil Deluxe. It was a Christmas present for my mom, which would have been in 1997. They got married in 1995, and my mom used her Eureka ESP until then. Think of that MAJOR change! Going from a direct air cleaner with no attachments, to a clean air vacuum, with onboard tools and much more suction! That Dirt Devil went through a move, so all of the attachments were lost. It was replaced around 2000 or 2001 with a Fantom Thunder.

Kenkart, i know what you mean! you were lucky to have had that Celeb 2, I could only DREAM of having a vac like that with a PN! ( I HATED that Connie and that DAM powerdrive with a passion) I would have been thrilled with a Powermatic!
I still have Grandma's 1974 Golden J,,its one of my prized possessions. The motor is a little tired now,,but still fires right up! To this day my mother says a vacuum cleaner is nothing more than a glorified trash can. HAHA (there are very few things we agree on) She makes my Dad do all the vacuuming. | ||

Mama's Vacuum
My parents got married in 1952 at the very young age of 15 for my Mama and 17 for Daddy. They did not get a vacuum till they had been married for 5 years. My Grandmother gave it to them. It was a GE swivel top tan and dark brown. Then after I was born (one of 6 kids) she got a dark blue and light blue Premier swivel top.
Then in 1972 our family business took off and my Mom got a brand new Electrolux 1205. I have the 1205 I do not remember what they did with the GE or Premier. Then when they downsized to a 2 bedroom condo back in 1993 she switched and purchased a Hoover Celebrity II. They had that for only a year and the housekeeper dropped the hose in the toilet when vacuuming and sucked up water and killed it. I am now working and so I purchased a Miele do not remember the model and they had that till they passed and then it went to my sister who killed it in short order by leaving it outside in the rain. She said she was cleaning her car and got distracted. As she is a total air-head that is plausible. | ||

My Mom's first vacuum was a 1948 Hoover Model 28 with all the attachments. Then in 1963 she got a turquoise Electrolux model G, and the Hoover got sent downstairs to be used in the basement. She used the Electrolux until a year ago when she passed away. I now have both her Hoover and Electrolux in my collection.... | ||

My mom had a Electrolux Super J, which she got shortly after my grandmother upgraded to a Diamond J. The Super J is long gone, but the Diamond J is now in my closet and still runs fine! | ||

When my folks married in 1956, someone had given then an old Royal tank. Then in 1959 when I was about 2 years of age, our neighbor Gloria who sister worked for the General Electric Company in Ohio, arranged for my mother to purchase a machine through Gloria's sister. My mom thought she was getting a model like Gloria had; a Westinghouse canister model DC 7. Instead she got a GE canary yellow canister machine with a plastic swivel top and no wheels. The machine came with a rectangle rug/floor attachment, dusting and upholstery (fabric) attachment. No crevice tool. Needless to say, she was quite disappointed. My mom told me that they paid $35 for the machine.
In those days we lived in a new 3 bedroom ranch style house. The only carpeting was in a small living room. I do remember her wearing out the original fabric nozzle and a replacement as well. She did not care for the rug nozzle, though she did use it too. I also remember my dad buying replacement attachments for the vacuum cleaner, including a crevice tool.The hose was replaced twice. I remember the color of the replacement attachments: rug nozzle and fabric nozzles were green and the crevice tool was blue. The dusting brush never was replaced, though after time it disappeared. It probably was thrown out my accident; never did find it. The machine eventually ended up at in the basement, and in or around 1967 it was tossed in the trash. The machine was pretty-well tow up by then. Years later, my dad told me that this machine probably was an economic model from the factory. My dad work for Sears as a repairman. So, after that we always had Kenmore machines, until in 1990 I bought my mom a Royal tank with power head. She ran that machine for 15 years. My mom now has a Sears Kenmore machine which was purchased 10 years ago. She does not do much vacuuming today. | ||

When my parents married in 1950 they lived on the second floor of Gramma Schaef's huge Victorian house in downtown London Ontario. Her brother Uncle Harry and his wife Aunt Bern(ice) lived on the third floor. Gramma had converted the house to three apartments just before the war. Being younger by 9 years than her 5 married siblings Mom Marylou lived with Gramma on the first floor until she met and married Dad Jack. Each large floor comprised 3 bedroom apartments with two baths, kitchen, dining room and living room. Both families bore and raised 3 children while there. My brother came along in 1951 and myself in 1953. Our 'apartment' was so large - the house was 3 times as long as it is wide with a two story stable barn with a turntable in the back yard (all carriage and auto access was through the back lanes) - that my parents had a student border Bill Schwetz renting the third bedroom until my sister came along in 1955. Bill was a lifelong buddy and babysitter long after we moved to our own house through the 1960s and in the 70's when Bill married the beautiful Maple.
We moved out of Dufferin Street in 1961. The house 'exploded' in 1965 entirely due to the city's purposeful neglect because they wanted the land to build their new City Hall, Concert hall, Apartment building and City Plaza for Canada's Centennial in 1967. While I have vivid memories of the entire house and floor plan I am particularly fond of the leaded cylinder glass bay above the front porch entrance. This was the small kitchen off the dining room to the left. I would lie in that window and listen to the table radio for hours while my brother and sister were in the livingroom to the right watching the 19" B&W TV. :-) The Big House on Dufferin Street:

Anyway, Mom would go down the back servant stairs and borrow Gramma's Filter Queen Model 200A, which she gave us when we moved to South London. I remember this beast so well and Mom would tie up my sister's hair in rags and set her under the FQ hairdryer hood. I also remember the cloth tool saddle yoke with pockets that sat on the motor rim. When the 200A wore out Mom got another used Filter Queen, probably the Model 700 or a brown 33 because I recall it had the Power Nozzle. FQ Model 200A

In 1967 Dad surprised Mom with a brand spankin' new Electrolux 89 with PN.
This vacuum was considered long gone and lost for years by Mom. Unbeknownst to her, when it was replaced with something I don't recall (I left home in 1969) Dad absconded the 89 to his basement and later garage workshops - whence Mom would never tread unbidden - where it served admirably for decades as his Shop Vac. He engineered & canoodled many modifications from spare parts to keep it running. Two years ago at Christmas Dinner I brought up the subject of Mom's lost 89. My brother piped up that he had it in his basement gathering dust. Only he knew! He had taken it home after Dad died. The next day I packed that vacuum in the car and brought it home. I have left all Dad's improvements just as he left it. Green Body well-dented, Red cordwinder and gray cord, green woven hose sealed with a layer of matching red Tuckey Hardware plastic bags and a pale yellow PN Model 200, no doubt acquired at some local vacuum Shop as required through the years. Nothing could break the green telescopic wand apparently... Besides all the usual vacuuming tasks he used it to clean up balsa wood sanding dust from his airplane model hobby and also had a hookup to the belt sander and table saw. Jim says that Dad called it The Baboon...because of its Red Ass. (He was no doubt thinking of the Mandrill baboon) Family story - great wistful memories. LOL

Parents and grandparents
I remember as a 3 year old the Electrolux salesman showing up at our door literally right after our Westinghouse purple torpeedo vac crapped out as if the guy had ESP. Mom was flabergasted. He brought in both a low end blue L and one with a cord winder and powerhead. Asking mom if she had any trade in's she promptly went in the cellar and brought up her grandfathers model XI. The saleman was flabergasted and told her that was by far the oldest machine he had traded in for many a year! He told mom that was going in the front window on display. Mom settled on the regular blue L and still has it to this day as her main cleaner.
In 1978 Tehans department store was having a sale on Regina Electrikbrooms and her and Nana went there to check them out with me in tow. They settled on the deluxe blue 3 speed model with power plus and Nana bought both herself and mom one. Well mom's got used very hard and eventually sold at a garage sale in 1995 but I still have Nana's and it works as new. Speaking of Nana, which of course was mom's mother, she had a brown model G Lux with powerhead as her daily driver bought new in 1968 right up until 1997 when she went into a nursing home. She gave it to me when I moved to my first apartment in 1998 and I used that awesome machine for a while until the hose gave up. I had her original hose ends with a new tan section installed, cleaned up the tank and cord and powerhead and from that point it has been carefully stored in a box complete as a show piece. She still purs like a kitten and runs as new to this day. Dads mom who I called Gram, bought a new model E lux during the 50's and they had that machine right up until there passing in 1995. They also had a 1968 green one speed Regina broom that I loved using when I went over to there house. Of course I have both machines in mint condition stored away at my place curently. Mom's first vac
My grandmother bought my mom a Kenmore Powermate around 1987 as a housewarming gift.
She used it up until I was born, 11 years later. Around the time I was born they bought a Kenmore Destiny Plus. That saw it's fate from vacuuming nails/other crap when our old carpet was ripped up in 2002. Sad thing is, It could have been saved and It probably would have still run today. | ||

My parents had a 1950s vintage ('56 or 57 maybe?) Lewyt canister. It was vertically oriented like a shop vac with a charcoal gray tank and a pink motor on top. That thing was around the house well into the '80s, maybe even the '90s. The thing still ran but we quit using it because the hose was split.

What a fun thread!
My parents received this model of Eureka for a wedding present. They used it until my Great Grandfather went into nursing care and we inherited his Kirby Sanitronic VII. I loved that old Kirby...so sad my Mom sold it in a yard sale a few years ago without my knowledge!
I have such good memories of vacuums growing up!

my moms first vacuum
was a Hoover Celebrity Powermatic canister vacuum it had the air ride body style whit the caster wheels on the bottom it was light blue on top and dark blue on the bottom .I was in love whit that vacuum cleaner i still remember cleaning my moms car whit it in a hot summer after noon aaah the memories . One day my mom ex boyfriend took it away whe thought he was going to fix it .... he never did i had lost my beloved vacuum .Im still looking for on btw . It was replace by a 4 gallon shop vac that lasted 12 years that thing was used and used again by my mom my brother and me also .It saved us from a flood to whe had a leak in the basement because of a crack in the foundation out came the mighty shop vac to the rescue I have a video of it on my you-tube channel 4 gallon shop vac power head demo .That's right i added a power head and a 16 feet long hose that thing was a beast loud but function right .I replace that whit a c9 compact electra .

as a little boy
back in the early 60s i remember my aunty having a Goblin upright vacuum cleaner it was called The Goblin Wizzard Delux cream handle and blue bag the main body was blue with a cream hinged flap where the tools fitted with a red goblin on the bag it looked a little like a hoover 119 i have never seen another.has anyone got one? .The thing i remember the most is the stink of dog that came from it when it was in use [my aunty had a yellow labrador]and the fact that she was always having to empty it because it would fill up with dog hair

My parents were married in 1936, but didn't have their own vacuum until either 1951 or 1952, when they bought a brand new Lux XXX, with cord winder, Companion tool holder, sprayer, vaporizer, and floor polisher. Mom used it until 1974, when I bought her a 966 Electro-Hygiene tank, while I was selling Electro-Hygiene. Here's my Lux XXX, just wish I had Mom's. This is actually about 3 or 4 years older than Mom's, but similarly equipped.

My moms first vacuum was one that my Aunt gave her as a house warming gift when she rented her first apartment. It was a golden GE Swivel Top. I was three years old. Over time it went to her sister. My Grandma upgraded to a New Electrolux. I don't remember the model but I was about 5 at the time and she gave my mom the old Electrolux she had. My mom always had the hand me downs from my Grandma. It was around 1986 when she finally bought a new one from Sears.
My mom was always hell on vacuums and so is my sister. She killed the Electrolux my Grandma gave her. Bought the Kenmore and had that about seven years or so before she killed it. | ||

My parent's first vacuum was a Kirby 518, which I still have, I refurbished it some years back and it sits in the box, I took it to the 2014 100th Birthday Kirby convention and it won 1st prize for best rebuilt. I still have a few of my parent's old vacuums. | ||

You Guys Are Lucky...
I remember two bagged vacs that my dad used to clean drywall dust. In the house, we had a Shark upright that started "screaming" a year later. Bought a Bissell Lift-Off, but me as a dumb 5 year old cut the cord WHILE IT WAS LIVE!!! We got a Bissell Healthy Home Vacuum to replace the Lift-Off. The Healthy Home got nasty and was replaced with a Dyson DC25 which I loved! (I didn't know Dysons were terible!) My great grandmother had a Hoover Elite with a metal brushroll, but that was tossed because the belt had slipped.

My parents first vacuum was a new Electrolux Model E purchased from a friend of my Dad. At the same time my grandmother has a brown Kenmore Commander pull around tank from the late forties, that was shaped like a torpedo and sounded like a jet engine winding up when it was turned on. Today I own one just like it along with a recently acquired Kencart version in the same color. Very nostalgic for me!
