Hi Jack,

Very nice! Looks to be a well thought out cleaner. Have you had a chance to put it through its paces yet? With 300 airwatts I imagine it will have pretty good performance!

Rob

Wonderful pictures Jack!

I guess that you will have to do the usual and create some artificial dirt in your ultra-clean home to test the pick up? Will the machine be carefully cleaned and placed back in its box once a video has been made and stashed away to become an antique of the future? ..or maybe Vax are paying you to test it for them?!

Regards,

Stephen

Jack

Interesting machine.

I see that the cyclonic bin has been redesigned compared to previous models.

Can you do a series of photos of the bin cyclone arrangements?

Rob - it's actually just been independently verified as having 340 airwatts, so it's more powerful than even Vax thought! I must admit, though, I'm a little disappointed; the build quality isn't amazing, and it has a few design quirks I'm not happy with. It's not terrible by any means, but not incredible, either.

Stephen - I use all my cleaners from time to time. It will be used occasionally, when I feel like it!

Calum - here's a picture of the separation system; the outer bin is just air-ducts and drop zone for the dirt.

Forgive the sloppy MS Paint diagrams!

Outer cyclone flings larger particles out to the side of the separator, away from the shroud. The bulky debris then falls into the lower portion of the bin.

Meanwhile, airflow carrying finer particles passes through the shroud, before being split between 13 high-efficiency cyclones. Dust particles fall into the upper chamber, whilst the clean air passes upwards, through the prefilter.

I guess Vax designed the shroud to create less air-resistance than the traditional perforated shroud - but it's hopeless at deflecting human and animal hair! Only one person who lives in this house has long hair, and I used this cleaner to vacuum once... all this was caught up...

Hair also got caught on the baffles of the cyclones, blocking their exits... remember, this is after a single use! I doubt many users would bother (or even think!) to clean all this out after every use, so I can see it clogging up fairly quickly...

Hair on the pre-filter. On the plus side, as you can see, it seems to have removed the fine dust fairly well.

Good pics and explanation of how the cyclone works.

Heres a pic of the filters on my Dyson DC24 after 1 month use. I have a problem with hair geting straight onto the pre motor filter but to be fair, this is after a months use, so its quite efficient.

Thanks Jack.

So it seems to be one of those "a nice idea that is hopeless in practise".

One wonders if Vax's research department actually conducted real world testing. They would be better sticking with the perforated shroud.

Exquisite pictures as usual Jack - (except for those MS paint markings eeeewwwww!) Thanks for such a detailed view/explanation of the unit.

Unbelievable it can't handle long hair. It would fare well on all the long dog hair in our house.

Calum - quite! I wonder if the intention was to create a machine which would outperform Dyson on paper (higher airwatts, larger bin capacity etc), but in reality, the compromises taken to achieve these targets have resulted in a machine which doesn't actually work properly...

Rick - many thanks, really glad you enjoyed them :)

Pete - perhaps I should lend this cleaner to you... the results would be quite entertaining!
