Hi all, I recently acquired a circa 1984 Advance Carpetwin 14 (actually model 140) that needs a new brush roll motor. This is a real tank of a commercial vacuum and I hate to relegate it to display-only status as it survived nearly 30 years of hard daily use.
The brush roll motor is actually a 1/10t HP permanent-magnet DC motor, which gets it's power from a bridge rectifier. Unfortunately, while parts lists and service manuals are easily available for this machine, everyone I talk to says they no longer have any parts for such an old vacuum. The other model Carpetwins, including the current 16XP use considerably different AC motors.

Anyone have a parts-machine Carpetwin 14 that could be a motor donor? That said, if anyone has any working Carpetwins from the pre-Nilfisk era that they wish to part with, let me know as well.
I sort of fell in love with the massiveness and commercial quality of this machine and would love to find more.

Thanks in advance!
Doug

I've always liked the old Carpetwins. They're great machines, and yes, you called it right when you said they were massive.

One thing to consider -- my understanding is there was a relay on these machines to start the brush motor. Are you sure the motor is bad and not just the relay? If it's the relay, that might be easier to find a comparable replacement than the motor, and probably at considerably lower cost.

Also, I'm guessing the 16-inch version (Model 160) from the same era probably used the same brush motor. Might be a good idea to look for one of those as a donor machine too.

Good luck!

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the notes. I am afraid it really is the motor. How do I know? Well, the magnets themselves have become unglued from the housing! Amazingly, the motor worked for a little while with the magnets simply wedged in place and stuck to the armature, but that didn't last long. I tried re-epoxy-ing the magnets back in place as close to where they were as possible, but I think I got it wrong as the motor now does not run smoothly at all, and it spins, but erratically.
I tested it under load on the bench using a typical bridge rectifier and resistor to simulate the conditions when installed in the machine, and it still works pretty crummily.
Likewise, the 16 does not use the same motor, in fact, it is a 120VAC motor. None of the other Carpetwins seem to use this DC motor.

Thanks again for the help.
Doug

AC vs DC motors in Carpetwins

I am also a bit surprised that they used a DC motor in my 140. I was really hoping I could just swap in a motor from a different model, but it seems like they all used something different, even amongst models made during the same time frame. I think mine was built around 1983 or 1984, and indeed the 160 has a motor that won't mount correctly in the 140. My motor looks extremely similar to what was used on countless gear motor assemblys made by Dayton, Ametek, and who knows what other manufacturers, but I cannot seem to find a 100V version anywhere.

I may end up using a 120V AC motor that fits and has comparable RPMs I'll Just wire around the bridge rectifier and put a small capacitor across the handle microswitch to minimize contact arcing.

Doug E.
