I was at Unique Thrift Store two days before Christmas, and shoppers were carving up the store like a turkey. I peeked into the stockroom where donated items are stored before they are tested, priced and put out on the sales floor. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a grey and orange Dyson DC14. I asked if I could purchase it, so one of the salespeople said "yeah, give me 5 minutes." About 5 minutes later, I walked out with the cleaner for $16.99. I brought it home, cleaned all the hair and string off the roller brush, and plugged it in. The suction works fine, but in order for the roller brush to turn, you have fiddle with bare floor/carpet knob. No clicking or ratcheting issues. You can tell this machine has had its fair share of use. Is this a belt issue, or a clutch issue? I've never taken one apart (except to thoroughly clean the cyclone assembly). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
This sounds like perhaps the clutch is faulty or worn- is there a certain position you have to put the dial at for the brush to turn? It is possible that the clutch is not seated correctly in the brush housing, but this would be unlikely unless someone has fitted it incorrectly.
I have replaced the clutch on my UK model DC04 a few times (it is over 12 years old now, and heavily used)- the part is very common in the UK and available for around £17 GBP. If you can get a clutch at a reasonable price it may be easiest to simply replace the whole part.
This is quite a straightforward process, if a little fiddly..I've linked a video guide. Perhaps the US models have a different brush bar? But essentially the process should be the same.
