Hi guys,

I guess you could officially say the collecting bug has bitten now.

Went into the British Heart Foundation shop today, walked straight over to this, and bought it without second thought.

When I got it the handle release didn't work, but a bit of dismantling and reassembly and that's all sorted.

2 slight problems, but not the end of the world

The hose has a tear in it, which leaked suction badly, a bit of tape has sealed it up, not exactly pretty, but fully functional still.

The filter cover is also broken...another tape job :-D

strategically placed ofcourse...

Thanks guys!

I really like it, just wish the vacuum shop would hurry up and open so I can get a new belt, bags and filters and really try it out!

Now just to find a new filter door and hose....

Would be nice to get a new brushroll at some point too, bearings are starting to go in this one.

Nice find...
re the hose tear. I've "fixed" some of those using GE Silicone Glue It comes in a tube sort of like toothpaste and it dries clear and very rubbery. If the GE isn't sold near you there's probably another UK brand name available at a hardware store.

The 612 is one of my favourite 600 series, great find
I had a very good condition 612 when I was a kid, think it got dumped :(

The hose is fixable!
The one on my 610 had split there, I managed to repair it,
can't remember how,
Somehow managed to get it out of the cuff etc and cut it back and then back together :)

Heres my line up of 600's, mainly thanks to James Brown ;)

The hose

Hi Pete,

I've never seen that silicone glue before, I'll have a look into that, thanks.

Hi James,

Love your 600s! I knew two or three people who had the 614 for YEARS.

If I can't find any way of sorting it out without shortening it (not that it would make much difference) I'll have to give that a go!

I notice on the bag door of your 612, the '612' is written next to 'electronic'. On mine it is above. I guess one style was earlier and one was later?

Cheers

Matt

Thanks,
I can't remember exactly how I fixed the hose, but I think I just cut the hose at the split to keep it as long as possible, then pulled the last little bit out of the cuff/ swivel collar thingy.
It was glued in I think, then simply screwed the hose straight back in! Its deffently possible and worth doing.

Hmmm, maybe ealier and later, the other James knows more about it then me, but we compared my 612 and the one he kept,
there where quite a few differences between them.

I need another 612 really, for parts, a few of my 600's need some repairs.

Good luck with the hose if you choose to repair it, keep us updated.

You're a star! Cutting and reattaching it worked PERFECTLY!!!

I'll post a pic once I've removed all the sticky sellotape crap off of it lol.

Fab 612 and great news on the repair,

Always one of my favourite colours, id love to own a 612 at some point. Already got the 610 albeit the German version badged Progress. Made in the UK all the same though.

link to the thread below.

This year bought the Progress from a very good friend of mine and thought that one would do me. Well low and behold weeks after stumbled across a 614 and weeks after a 616 which I couldnt darn well leave. May as well go for the full set haha.

Machines that are a pleasure to use, even the shortness of the hose does not really retract from the pleasure. Light and compact enough to carry on the stairs, the butterfly tool certainly the best dusting tool of any cleaner modern and past. These models IIRC were the last to have this tool supplied.

Not to cause any wars but I was thinking Sebo may have been the first to have the hose integral to the machine and even tools attached? Perhaps a little advertising bloop from Lux?

Enjoy your Lux!

Great find there Matt!

Really pleased by your new find, but start taking pills for the collecting bug thing!

From one who failed to take the required doses, I can assure you that it will spiral totally out of control. lol.

100% fun though.

Hi James.

Love the 600-series lineup picture!

Have never seen a 615 before - was it an exclusive machine or part of the core model lineup?

Am liking the light mustard yellow colour too, though looks strange on an electrolux non 500-series upright.

Paul

Haha, glad it worked for you Matt :D

Paul, thanks, I believe the 615 was an exclusive model.
Im not 100% sure if it is meant to be mustard colour, or just very badly sun damaged etcc.
The dusting brush is much whiter, but the "wings" themselves are very yellow.
I strangley like it that colour too haha.
Nice machines you have there :)

Hi guys

Thanks, the more I hear about these vac's the happier I am about my purchase. I'd never really thought about them much before, never used one, have just seen them in neighbour's garages, most people I knew had the 500 series or the later Glider and Contour models.

Seems strange that there aren't more around, poor build quality would be the obvious answer, but to my hand this feels very sturdy and the plastics have a nice feel to them (excluding the bag door...which bows in if you put your hand on the end of the hose *LOL*)

If definately needs a good polish and a few little (mostly cosmetic) repairs (the camera flash picks up every little mark, but in nomrmal lighting it looks very smooth!)

Have never head of the 615, the colour does strike me as being rather odd, I thought perhaps a case of yellowing too, but the other white models from the range don't appear to suffer from this. Odd!

That German model must be quite a rare beast, I can't imagine these sold too well on the cylinder-dominated German market (can't imagine it being too practical either, considering most German homes I have been in have had hard floors throught!)

As you say Rob it is rather light and easy to move, it's excellent for stairs (especially with the half landing at my parent's house). Mother has been a cylinder girl for about 10 years now, this is the first upright she's used and enjoyed using. Perhaps it has coverted her....

Take care all!

Matt

User guide

Congratulations Matt, great find.

My mum had a 610 model for years when I was growing up- as a young kid I managed to rip the hose handle off too and it was replaced with the grey hose from another model- must have been a weak point in the design! Sadly that one is long gone, but it's good to see from this thread that they are still out there to find.

Attached below is a copy of the user manual from ours..

Hey Matt,

very nice first find! I do have a soft spot for these, all credit to Electrolux for building well designed clean fan action machines after Hoover lost interest. Quite a revolutionary machine really, apart from yer Orecks and Kirbys, just about every upright nowadays has attached tools.

ISTR the advertising slogan at the time was 'The vac with the hose at the back'...

Simon

Post# 119472 , Reply# 33   12/28/2010 at 09:36 (4,861 days old) by twocvbloke ()

I had one of the later Electrolux ContourII models in dark blue (great colour, best thing about that vac!!), and I really didn't like it, yeah it worked, but, even a piece of stray sellotape was enough to block it up, it just didn't have the power (and it was an "ESP" one, Extra Suction Power) to fold a piece of thin plastic film.

When it finally broke it's belt, I decided it was time to get rid of it, by then it was about 10+ years old, and was long past it's best (plus I got a free Kirby LegendII, so no real loss to me)...

I actually saw a Contour nearby being thrown out a couple of months ago, I took a few looks at it, wondering if I should save it, but I didn't, mainly cos I remembered about the past experiences with my ContourII...

Post# 119474 , Reply# 34   12/28/2010 at 10:18 (4,861 days old) by sebox4 ()
Hi Simon

Definately revolutionary at the time, you could almost get away with selling them now (albeit with less 80s styling perhaps).

David, I have an original Contour 'Varipower', that replaced my Mum's Hoover Junior back in 1993, a very powerful and effective cleaner I find! IIRC the ESP was simply a 'boost' button, which gave you a few seconds of max motor power. Mine has a variable power dial, so I can run it at full power all the time if I so choose.

Matt

Post# 119483 , Reply# 35   12/28/2010 at 11:16 (4,861 days old) by twocvbloke ()

You know, I don't actually recall a button for a power boost on that thing, the only buttons being the release pedal and the power button (and the bag compartment too I guess), if there was one on there, they hid it well... :S

The only differences between that one and the other Contour models that I could see was it had a loop-handle, where the other models just had a plain, straight handle, I liked the loop handle, just like the one on my Sanitaire, makes them easier to use... :)

Contour 2...

turbo500's profile picture
I don't believe there was a contour 2 with ESP, as they were all 1000w by that point. It was the second generation of contours that had the ESP and the boost button, from what I remember.

I have a 1995 Electrolux Airclean (a contour, but with 1200w and a looped handle) and I love it. It really is a great vacuum!

And Matt, congratulations again on the 612. the 600 series are some of my all time favourites. My grandma had a 610 when I was a kid :)

Post# 119486 , Reply# 37   12/28/2010 at 13:15 (4,861 days old) by twocvbloke ()

Well, our ContourII boldly proclaimed that it had "ESP", printed on the base above the nozzle, so, it was either a misprint, or someone made an error when manufacturing the thing... :)

I think it was a 900 Watt model too...

ESP

turbomaster1984's profile picture
Ok folks,

When the Contour range first came out in 1990 they had several models rranking in wattage and various feature order, it went like this

Elite (Red 500w)

Twin Turbo (White 600w)

Contour (White 700w)

Contour (Turquoise 800W - Pulse power- a 10 second burst at 800watts reverting back to 600watts after)

Airstream (Grey 1000w Variable down to 300)

Then in 1992/3 they kept the same models but altered the Turquoise contour to be an 800w variable power machine with a slider like the airstream albeit a thinner disc to turn.

Then came ESP in 1994.

Same line up of machines but instead of having black or grey elbows on the hoses they were made clear.
Also ESP aka Extra Suction Power was printed on the hoods for whatever reason, IIRC they tweaked the motor fans to produce more suction.

Then in 1996 a whole new range came in various NEW colours, looped handles were put on some mostly TOL in the Contour/Airstream categories, ESP stayed as a feature and advertised on hoods. There were several wattages of Contour from 700w to 1100w, maybe even 5 models on the go at the same time superseding the Elite, Twin Turbo etc etc.

Airstream went to 1200 watts.

As i remmeber more il post, but thats the jist of it.

Several models ran until about 2002 or so and some did indeed stil have ESP printed on the machine.

Rob, IIRC, the Contour 2 range (including the Flexihead) had more basic graffics than the original contours, and didn't feature ESP? My nan had a yellow contour 2, 1000w, and that just said "contour 2" on it, in VERY basic font on the hood, with electrolux written vertically up the bag door. I don't remember a Contour 2 with the ESP logo?

Post# 119566 , Reply# 41   12/29/2010 at 12:33 (4,860 days old) by twocvbloke ()

Makes me wish I had a picture of the thing (this was before I got interested in vacs), I'm 100% positive that the thing had the ESP logo, in green, printed on the base of the vac...

Thinking about it, I do know we have a post-christmas/new year video somewhere, from about the time that the vac was relatively new, no idea where it is though... :)

This is the SS96 Argos catalogue,

Has the same Contour 2 I have in the storage unit, which is indeed an ESP machine,

You can just make out Contour 2 with the 2 in the turquoise handwriting style and ESP is rather clear on it,

Soon as we get up storage il take a few pics of this model.

DC01...

The DC01 has poor suction, is the flimsiest of all the Dyson's and the messiest to empty. It also has the most impractical tools. The DC04 was a VAST improvement. If only it had the bottom emptying system.

I used to get a few..

hooverbaby's profile picture
610s, 612s etc in for repair. They were straightforward enough to work on, though I never really took to them, partly because a few of the examples I came across had already been hammered and suffered from the worn out inner chassis syndrone. In particular, the black inner chassis used to wear badly around the rear wheels, which would then go skew wift and fall out. Later chassis were improved upon but they now seem to be an obsolete part.
The other thing that used to sometimes wear out was the little white plastic fork adjusting the front rollers, though, to be fair, these would generally give good service. A worn one would cause the handle to lean inwards.
Early 612s had metal handle ratchets; later ones had slot-in plastic ones..and on one side the suction pipe was attached.
I remember one week doing well with a couple I fixed on a local car boot sale; this was at a time when they were just becoming popular about 1990.
Early..and some replacement brush rolls were a pain, having a screw to remove at either end, sometimes seized in position. Some of the later Gen Electrolux ones had interchangeable ends for either Contour or 600 series machines.

As for the exhaust grilles, they were forever flying off! I did have a few second hand hoses but many disappeared with a 2004 garage break in. However, it's quite possible I still have a new one in storage and don't know where it's at! I've fixed a few myself, though it's a while since I've seen one; usually you can wedge in some screwdrivers to unclip the end, yank the remaining wire out of the screw thread and twist a new piece in. Some glue might help stop it working loose.

Stephen
