I just finished cleaning and polishing my Kirby, got it all back together now and it looks great again! Replaced the brushes on the motor while I had it apart, didn't do the bearings at this time since the local vacuum guy didn't have any and the current ones are still in good shape.
The cord is new from a year ago, bumper is original, and I've got a new headlight bumper on the way since the current one is severely scratched. There are still some scratches on the headlight, and I didn't do anything with the bumper but otherwise everything else looks great.

Lookin good. Were you handpolishing (ouch) or using a polisher of some type

Post# 117660 , Reply# 5   12/9/2010 at 18:45 (4,880 days old) by gusherb (Chicagoland)

hahaha, I hand polished it. I want to get a polishing tool though, can only get so far hand polishing before your hand starts to cramp up

I know all about the cramped fingers. There's all shapes and sizes of polishing pads that fit onto an electric drill, from tiny little things to med. to big, triangle shaped, ball shaped etc. Not sure if Home Depot carries them but if you look up Lapidary Supplies (rock polishing) in the Yellow pages there might be a place near you that would have them and other neat stuff.

This was originally my grandma's vacuum and when she got it new (around 1982) it was with the shakeout bag system and she later had it converted to paper bags, hence the Heritage II bag instead of the original orange one.

Hello Jonathan.

Nice job on the Heritage. Congratulations.

If I may be of assistance, don't hesitate to contact me.

You may or may not be aware that you can use the Mini-Emtor setup with a Heritage bag, that is if you'd like it to be closer to original.

Cheers & hagd all,

Bill

Heritage Series

I like them too! I especially like the HeritageII and the LegendII. They are very powerful and kind of quite. Not like the deep throaty roar like the 500 series.

The Heritage series has a very musical tune to it. I get so relaxed vacuuming with it that it's like meditating. hahaha

Yes, you're right about the Heritage II being powerful. Still, I have to laugh when I watch this video. Shame they had to ruin a '72 bug though....

I love the Heritage

Just after high school I bought a Heritage from a local thrift store. I had it serviced and while it was in the shop I had them change the bag to the H2 bag(I wanted the L2 bag, they were out). I used that vacuum daily for several years. When I got my first G3 I gave the Heritage to my sister-in-law(she hated it and traded it for a bagless Sanyo when I had my vac shop). I wish I still had it(that and several others).
The Heritage did look better in the H2 bag. I can't stand orange.
Justin

Nice job of polishing, what did you use?

Post# 118981 , Reply# 23   12/22/2010 at 03:07 (4,867 days old) by gusherb (Chicagoland)

I used Turtle wax rubbing compound, then Mothers aluminum polish. all done by hand.

Post# 119017 , Reply# 24   12/22/2010 at 11:59 (4,867 days old) by electroluxkirby ()

I going to start polishing my Legend II and Tradition soon, not sure what to use.

I think I will use Mother's on one and Simichrome on the other. The any scratchers on either machine, but they do have "age spots" as I call them, and if I remember correctly someone said to use 000 steel wool?

You did a great job, she looks as good as new!

I use a polishing compound usually made for plastics, as well as a light wax such as turtle wax

And using a very light grade sandpaper in soapy water really does the trick too before you use compounds...it really gets the grime right outta the metal!
