If money was no object, and storage space was infinite, which NEW vacs would you ask for for Christmas this year?

Here's the condition: you can have as many as you like, but they have to be currently in production. Nothing vintage, no refurbed older models!

Here's my list:

AEG-Electrolux UltraOne

Here is the Sentria I think you'll enjoy. It simply needs a light dusting, and a new belt and she'll be brand new!!!

I thought the rules were no vintage. Maybe I misunderstood!

That Vorwerk Kobold is neat looking, and as much as I like my older Vorwerk, I'd love Kobold, wish they were available here. That Electrolux looks awesome, and I usually don't like Eurekaluxes!

I think the Sebo X4 would be the only new thing I'd want... especially in red! Everything else I like/want is no longer in production (Lux Guardian, Dirt Devil Cruiser, Hoover Junior)... I guess I'd take a Miele S7 too!

Hey Bobby - AEG-Electrolux are a different company to EurekaLux, as far as I know. There's a big mess of sister companies and usage rights to the Lux name, but here, EurekaLuxes are sold as 'Electrolux', while the UltraOne, UltraActive and UltraSilencer ranges are sold as 'AEG-Electrolux'. AEG-Lux have only recently begun selling in the UK under that designation.

This is the TOL powerhead model, and it's designed to take a bite out of Miele's market-share. Which? Magazine have tested the lower-tier UltraOne models, and even the straight-suction model achieved 5/5 stars on all floor surfaces, as well as for noise output and filtration!

I've had a play with one in-store at John Lewis in London, and I was impressed - it's heavy and expensive (£299.99, plus lifetime of bags and filters), but very solid, well-made, quiet and powerful. It's beautifully designed, too - easy to use, and great to look at. The only thing stopping me from rushing out and buying one is the price, but when I have some spare cash, it's very high up on the 'want list'. Unusual for me, because it's not multi-cyclonic and not an upright!

OK, Jack.... I thought there were just two... the old Lux which is now Aerus and the Eurekalux (was that AB Electrolux)... but now I see yours and Whirlpolfs (nice btw), so I'm totally confused!

Kyle, I played with a Sebo Felix, and I didn't like it one bit! It just didn't have a good feel and was very heavy to hold... I thought I'd fall in love with it, and couldn't believe how incredibly disappointed I was with everything about it!

ONe more to my list If it hasn't been discontinued.... the entire Hoover Platinum Collection, especially the light weight bagged, but I'd really like the whole set!

Mine would be the Thermax CP-3 commercial carpet steamer.
With a 3 gallon stainless steel resivor and return tanks, and built in water heater.
A very pricey several thousand dollar carpet cleaner, but well worth the money

Ahh that Thermax machine reminds me of the one we used to rent from the grocery store in the early 90s. Ha a bit more rounded shape tho.

I want one of these, or one of its brothers and sisters from the 80s before the Express.

Hoover Freemotion

If you can get hold of one, I'd very strongly recommend the bagged versions over the bagless!

Their main let-down is the build-quality - the plastic is very thin and it just feels flimsy. I wouldn't trust the electronics, either. If you can put up with that (I'm sure you take excellent care of your stuff!), you'll probably like it - it's a nice design overall.

The combo dusting brush/ upholstery tool/crevice tool is useless, but the mini turbohead makes up for that. The clear powerhose is about average length and fairly lightweight, but mine tore almost completely around in the short time I owned it - it needs a strain-relief cuff where it exits the wand-handle. The pivoting floorhead is great if you live in a home like the one in the video - it's not so brilliant on carpet. Hoover haven't used it on any of their subsequent canister models, which might say something. It's a fun concept, anyway! The 'Navigator' wand handle is nice to use, as are the fingertip light-up power controls and wand-adjustment. I've never been keen on the pull-to-rewind cord set-up, though.

The pop-up filter cover is a cool visual touch... can't think of anything else to say about it!

Post# 115509 , Reply# 39   11/22/2010 at 00:52 (4,875 days old) by DysonAnimal ()

Here's the hose damage... the clear plastic isn't strong enough to hold up well over time without additional reinforcement.

Upcoming new Kirby Model

I am going to ask Santa for a rain check at Christmas and wait until the new Kirby model comes out, which I hope will be sometime in 2011.

I generally don't buy something so new and untested, but since Santa is being so generous, I'll gladly take one as soon as they come out. I know I'll be very curious and want to test it and put it through it's paces.

Of course I'll report here in detail on my findings. LOL

A Certified Pile Lifter-the big heavy chromed body-with the engraved-painted "Pile Lifter" logo on it-and the huge usually blue outer bag that takes paper inserts. And it sports a Royal upright motor for suction-and a chromed 1/3 hp split phase motor to turn the GIANT drum like brushroll to deep clean carpets-before wet cleaning or shampooing-then after when the carpet is dried to relift the nap. They are BEAUTIFUL machines to see in person-but large and heavy.would love to have one with its sales demo kit-the dirtmeter that goes with it-sort of like the ones on Kirbys.

Happy to say I've now acquired two of the cleaners from my wishlist (which I'll share in the next few days)... did anyone else get any of theirs over the Christmas period? If so, let's see some photos!

A cautionary tale...

Prompted by the discussion of the Hoover Freemotion above, I bought a brand new replacement for the one I used to own from Amazon just before Christmas. It was on offer for considerably less than it's RRP, and I wondered if maybe I'd just been unlucky with my previous one.

It arrived, I took it out of the box, snapped a few photos, then took it into the dining room to try it out. And encountered a problem... as you can hear from the video below, the 4 gaskets around the dustbox fail to make an airtight seal, so the cleaner shrieks when you try and use it on the higher power settings. I considered contacting Hoover's customer service dept. to get a replacement, but after hearing from two friends, both of whom had encountered exactly the same problem with exactly the same cleaner, I returned it to Amazon for a full refund!

Sebo Felix

Found a picture of the Sebo Felix Premium Navy I used to own - from a set of pics I took for the eBay listing when I sold it.

I wasn't keen on the hose set-up, but no complaints about use or performance in upright mode. I *personally* find this manual-with-guidance height adjustment system vastly superior to the automatic adjustment on the X-Series machines, but that's just my preference. Brushroll's a bit aggressive for some looped-pile carpeting, but aside from that, a great cleaner!

Hey there Kevin! Love this Electrolux! The 110 Volt Ultrasilencer Green is highly rated by Consumer Reports here as a great non-carpet cleaner.

Just curious - where does one store the crevice tool? You never see anyone on YouTube showing you this.

Hey Brian! Nice to hear you like it, the butterfly tool clips on the handgrip like most of the Luxes, but there's no place to store the crevice tool, so I store it on the box.

Gracias Kevin!!!!! :-)

Well that's a bummer! You'd think for the money you pay, they could at least have made a tiny slot somewhere on the vac to slide in a crevice tool! I mean it does not require design ingenuity to find a place to dig a slot for that slim little uncomplicated tool.

Love the machine, but that must be a little annoying, don't you think? :-)

$$$ no object?

Then I would like a Miele USA S 5481 Earth, please.
Because, it's a TOL model, it has the electronic controls, electric hose and telescopic wand, comes with the SEB217-3 Powerbrush, it's a sexy shape and it's Blue...and we all know how important colour is to a vacuum's performance.

I have also wanted the S 5281 Pisces from last year because it's also blue and it says PISCES, which I am one of, so that's a no-brainer. But I never got serious about it because of the price being asked for a BOL entry level Miele, it has no power hose or PN and uses the rotary dial. If and when I find a used PISCES I will not hesitate to snap it up.

I'd also like a Miele S-7 upright but again, the same criteria would apply...TOL in a pleasing colour.

Why not get one in Canada, you ask?
The Canadian S-5 models have been reduced to only three versions, they have silly pretentious names (Contour/Momentum/Continuum) and they are all much less pretty, never mind no blue.

Hi Jack,

Nice looking cleaner - this that floor nozzle a power nozzle?
It reminds of a certain Electrolux Twinclean ..... How does it perform overall?

My sister got a new Vax "Magnum" upright today, to replace the falling apart Hoover Triple Vortex (motor screaming, handle release/chassis knackered, dust filtration failing, etc).

I am very impressed by the Vax suction at the floor nozzle: it lifts the carpet properly clear of the floor, unlike the Vortex.

Also, the Vax has nine secondary cyclones, in addition to the primary cyclone. Cleans carpets brilliantly and more efficiently than the Vortex.

Kevin - yes, was a little on the pricey side, but I couldn't resist... I totally recommend it if you do decide to get one, it's worth every penny!

Shanon - Currently awaiting delivery of a Digital Slim ;)

Al - The powerhead is certainly similar to the TwinClean's, but feels a lot sturdier, as one would hope for a cleaner of this price! It has a 'proper' brushbar, too.

It's a brilliant cleaner, more power than anything I've ever used. I'd say in terms of performance, design, and the feel of the build-quality, it at least matches, if not beats, a Miele Revolution. And as a huge Miele fan, I wouldn't say that if I didn't mean it! Miele's great advantage is their well-established reputation for long-term reliability - AEG-Electrolux is rather an unknown quantity in the UK that respect. Although as you know, the Revolution 500 series were notorious for powerhose failure.

I'll bring it along to our next meet-up so everyone can give it a try. It really has to be experienced before it can be fairly judged!

I've attached a link to a release from the Electrolux Press Dept., about the UltraOne series having topped consumer organisation testing in five countries. Which? gave one of the more basic UltraOne models a glowing review, but recently stripped all of the AEG-Lux models of their 'Best Buy' status, because they 'didn't receive enough data on reliability in their latest user feedback survey'... kinda stupid when they were happy to make ALL Miele S7 models Best Buys without ANY reliability data! They've refused to make Sebo's new cylinders Best Buys for the same reason, despite their good test results.

Calum - the Vortex was always dreadful! I don't have one of the Vax Magnum models, but they look good on paper. Glad to hear it's met expectations. Vax have some new multi-cyclonic uprights coming shortly... will post more about those when I can!

Powerhead from my (former) TwinClean, for comparison...

Bristles like feathers - two rows are very soft, and two are very slightly stiffer. The brush bar is much more like the kind found on cleaners for the Asian market. It actually does a pretty good job on hard floors and lower-pile carpets.

UltraOne powerhead... closer to the Miele Electrobrush SEB 217-2.

The bristles aren't very aggressive, but they don't need to be! This cleaner rips the carpet off the floor...

With regard to Brian's comment about the lack of storage for the crevice tool on the Ultra Silencer - the TwinClean had a similar problem: storage for the crevice tool and dusting brush, but nowhere for the upholstery nozzle! Very annoying!

That's interesting, thanks.

When I was checking out the various vacs (online and in a few local shops), I was quite befuddled by the range of machines that Vax has on the market. The Vax website has only a select few in the main page; the Magnum was classed as "other upright".

It seems that the generic machine, say a Mach 1, is restyled/coloured differently and sold at certain outlets. Differently coloured/named versions are sold at other places.

I would say that the Vax Magnum is more usable than some of the Dysons that I have used. The Vax hose is easier to get at if you just want to remove crumbs off the sofa. The Vax also has a handle lock at 45°, to skip the cleaner nozzle over threshold strips and rug fringes. The Vax can get up to the kitchen units' kick strip, side on. Several Dysons cannot.

Did you consider the XP Pet? It looks almost identical to the Magnum, but claims 225 airwatts over the Magnum's listed 160, as well as a 10m cord, and a redesigned handle grip:

Speaking of Vax and multi-cyclonic technology, this is another of my recent acquisitions - a TurboForce Zero, based on the US Hoover Whisper.

For a cleaner with an RRP of £150, it includes a lot of high-end features: multi-cyclonic technology, a separate brushroll motor with on/off switch, reset button and indicator light, instant hose with telescopic wand, a soft-start motor, performance indicator light, lifetime washable filters...

However, it does feel lacking in power compared to other multi-cyclonic uprights of similar input wattage. I was surprised to find that the instant hose/wand doesn't have a changeover valve, so all the debris from the floor has to travese a long passage of U-bends and right-angles through the hose and internal ducting. It's also rather heavy, and feels a little bulky in use, like the Mach 7.

The head is much wider than most UK machines, which is great if you have lots of carpeting, but not so good if you have lots of furniture to navigate round - it would do well in a big house. The brushroll is extremely soft, as with many Vax cleaners - I'd be interested to see what, if any, difference using a Hoover Whisper brushroll in it would make, since more aggressive agitation might help compensate for the lower suction power.

Overall, it's not too bad, and well-equipped for the price. If given a choice, though, I'd probably rather have a Mach Air Reach. I notice the Amazon reviews are extremely mixed, and I can see what UK users would dislike about it.

A strange feature of this cleaner - although the exterior cyclone empties through a trap-door base, the fine dust collector does not - it's a sealed cup, which you have to untwist and tip out by hand. Although this is mentioned in the manual, and there's a sticker with text on affixed to the rear of the bin, I can easily see the average user overlooking this step, under the impression the entire contents have been dumped via the trap-door.

Post# 120560 , Reply# 99   1/7/2011 at 23:24 (4,829 days old) by DysonAnimal ()

It fills up fairly rapidly, so it wouldn't take long for fine dust to start backing up in the system.

I assume Dyson's patents necessitated this design, because I can't see any engineer creating this compromise unless they had to. I remember Vax multi-cyclonic uprights a couple of years ago in which the fine dust collector was sealed by a rubber plug on a piece of cord - like a giant bath-plug!

Vax Magnum

I bought the Magnum at the discounted price of £79.

I don't think that it is 160 air watts: it has a 1400Watt motor and 9 high efficiency cyclones. Compared to my mum's Mach Air, which has a 1200W motor and seven high efficiency cyclones, the Magnum seems to have similar or slightly more "oomph" than the Mach Air. And it is nice to have a proper beating action upon the carpets once again.

Also, I found a listing on the web for the Vax Astrada (another Magnum/Mach variant), and it purported to generate 180 Air Watts.

The Magnum also had instructions in the booklet about the inner cyclone "twist to remove" bung. However, the supplied model had none, and simply emptied in one movement, ala the Mach Air. Maybe the Dyson patents expired?

I considered Hoover UK models, but web reviews by purchasers were not complementary in the slightest. The Hoover Slalom got slated by one customer, where the drive belt was knackered from new and had to be sent back for servicing.

Purepower / DustManager models were considered and discarded because of the weak chassis in the cleaner head, where the handle-release pedal knackers up and causes problems.

Jack - glad I was not the only one annoyed by Electrolux's tendency to offer on-board storage for only 2/3 of a 3-piece tool set! Just amazing! And the Oxygens here are using that same tool-holder under the hose handle - I can't believe they could not come up with a way to store that nifty yet slim uphostery nozzle! I remember asking a Sears salesperson about the inclusion of an upholstery nozzle for an Electrolux Oxygen Three, and she had to go way back into the warehouse to find the little thing for me!!!! :-)

Tool storage

Electrolux designers are clearly losing the plot. Had they continued to produce the 2-in-1 "dusting brush with foldable wings", that would allow storage for a crevice tool and the 2-in-1 tool.

Another thing: doesn't tool storage on the handgrip add to weight and bulkiness, making the job of cleaning more awkward? Tool storage on the cleaner seems to be best: close at hand, but not in the way.

I am not a big fan of these 3-in-1 tools - the crevice tool is just too short! How can I use that to reach far and deep between my kitchen stove (cooker) and the wall? Or far down between a car seat and gear shift console, or far down between deep sofa cushions? And what's more ridiculous is the new UltraOne actually has plenty of space for three separate tools right under the hood of the main unit. The 3in1 tool sits to one side of the storage compartment!

I agree with those that prefer tools on board on the main unit. The tool holder under the hose handle again makes it difficult to position the hose handle in varying angles to clean in nooks and crannies. I sometimes like to drop the hose down the gap behind a refrigerator just to suck up the dust bunnies and with the tools hanging on for dear life, I would never be sure if they would not catch on some part of the refrigerator!!!!

This is where I think Miele has an advantage (forgetting the poor excuse for a dusting brush provided these days). They still give you 3 separate tools and a decent fabric nozzle with velcro thread grabbers. And even with the new S2 series, you can store all three close down to the main unit without having them get in the way up on the hose somewhere.

No matter how weird these Electrolux tool storage challenges - I love that UltraOne, Jack!!!! Lucky you....could not be in the hands of a more deserving vac afficianado! Not sure why you guys did not get the full power nozzle we can get with the model here on this side of the pond. I am awaiting with bated breath our Consumer Reports review of this vac!!! :-)

Post# 120805 , Reply# 112   1/10/2011 at 05:25 (4,826 days old) by DysonAnimal ()

'Not sure why you guys did not get the full power nozzle we can get with the model here on this side of the pond.'

It's just not necessary for cleaning our lower-pile carpets - the smaller powerhead, like the smaller Miele head, is perfectly sufficient. Another important difference is that the European 240v version of the UltraOne is rated at 2200w (as with many of the current Miele models), whereas the US/Canadian 120v version is only 1200w. The entry-level, straight suction model got 5/5 stars on all floor surfaces in Which? Magazine's testing without any form of revolving brush!

I've had to use mine on 'Auto' mode so far, because with a lightly-used bag, you literally cannot push the powernozzle across the carpet on anything above the middle power setting!

It is a great cleaner, and I'd certainly recommend it to anyone in the UK - can't speculate as to how the US version would perform, because of the differences mentioned above. No complaints about build-quality or ease of use, though, and I think it's a beautifully-styled cleaner.
