Perhaps Jack, who's ill and has had a very busy day, hasn't had the chance to comment yet. But thanks for revealing the surprise...

This tool has been on the Japanese site for over a month now

Companies, such as Wessel Werk, already produce tools for vacuuming animals. These can be fitted with either an actual brush or a curry comb.

The Dyson groom tool is only recommended for medium or long hair dogs only... The tool is not compatible with any of the motorhead canisters that were sold in North America. I find this odd considering all "Animal" models (which are supposedly tailored to pet owners) were purple motorheads in the first place.

...then again, with that wand setup, it would be like using a baseball bat to brush your animal...

I guess we'll start to see turbinehead "Animal" models now... ;)

MSRP for the tool in Canada is $83.99.

Jack, I certainly hope you're feeling better.... I just got over a terrible cold a few days ago that a very generous co-worker gave to me (wasn't that sweet)... it's no fun! I'll send some good thoughts your way!

I saw something about that on an internet site a few weeks ago (vacuum site), it looked interesting. My cat is very laid back normally, but I wouldn't get within ten feet of him if I were chasing him down with that thing in my hands attached to a running vacuum.... this from a cat who enjoys having his nails clipped! He is just scared of vacuums, maybe he feels outnumbered. They are OK if they don't come to life, but once they roar, he's gone!

This must be more for dog owners, as I think they'd more readily "hold still" for it than cats.

Piano_god:

Yes, it's been out in Japan for a month, unfortunately simultaneous global launches are tricky to pull off.

Dyson haven't claimed this is the first, or the only, tool for grooming animals with. They've simply announced that they've launched one, and explained how theirs works.

Yes, the Groom tool is only suitable for medium- to long-haired dogs, as Dyson state on their site.

You've listed three Motorhead models that Groom won't fit (it's not recommended for the handhelds either), but you've failed to list the models it WILL fit:

DC07 Origin/All Floors/Target/HSN Exclusive/Original/Pink/Low Reach/Animal/Full Gear
DC11 All Floors/Full Gear
DC14 All Floors/Animal/Drive/Low Reach/Total Clean/Full Kit/Full Gear/Full Access/Complete
DC15 All Floors/Animal/Totalclean/Totalkit
DC23 Turbinehead/Animal
DC17 Allergy/Animal
DC18 All Floors/ HSN Exclusive/Total Access/Full Kit
DC22 Turbinehead
DC24 All Floors/BLUEPRINT
DC25 All Floors/Animal/BLUEPRINT
DC26 Multi Floor
DC27 Total Clean/HSN Exclusive
DC28 Animal
DC33 Multi Floor

In other words, it fits the vast majority of Dyson cleaners sold in the US. Since the bulk of Dyson's sales in the US and Canada are uprights, the models it's not suggested for only account for a low proportion of Dyson's total output. Perhaps you feel that because owners of Motorhead models won't be able to use the tool, Dyson shouldn't have bothered creating a tool to help owners of any of their other models? Not everyone with a pet opts for a TOL Animal or Motorhead canister.

There is already an Animal Turbinehead model on sale - the DC23 Animal. ;)

Rick and Bobby - thanks for the good wishes :) I'm looking forward to spending this weekend in bed, recuperating!

DysonAnimal:

I do not feel (nor did I say) that Dyson should not have bothered create the tool...

What I am unsure of is why they would spend a year designing a tool that ends up not working on a series of current / recently discontinued models.

Furthermore, the marketing behind all "Animal" machines, including the DC23 Motorhead Animal and DC31 Animal, states that they are designed for homes with pets. I apologize for bothering you by thinking that a tool designed to be used on a dog should be designed to work on a machine that is being marketed and sold as "designed for homes with pets", along with the similar non-animal versions of the DC16, DC21, DC22, DC23, DC30, DC31 and likely the soon to be DC35.

Perhaps a version two will be in the works to address this...

I hope you are feeling much better soon.

Scott

Scott - I appreciate your point, and I agree that pet-owners with Motorhead models may find it frustrating that Groom isn't compatible - but although Dyson may be many things, they're not clairvoyant! The current Motorhead canisters have all been out for over two years - DC22 and DC22 were launched in 2008 - and pre-date the development of the Groom tool. It does, however, fit the vast majority of their cleaners, as I've tried to show in the list I compiled above. Dyson's best-selling model in the US is the DC25 Animal upright, which the Groom tool is compatible with. I, too, hope the next generation of Motorhead models feature a detachable wand, as I don't fine the current style very practical for above-floor cleaning.

Apologies if I misread the tone of your original post, but it seemed like you were just listing all the negatives, and I do find it very tiring when the forum's attitude to anything new is 'it looks like junk' or 'it won't work' before they've even tried it!
