My oldest vacuum is going to be nothing compared to most of you guys and gals, but here it is anyway, I believe this Regina is from the 1940's? I used to have an early Apex canister vacuum as well, and as usual I'm kicking myself for letting it go.

Post# 15-8/25/2006-22:42 ||| Unimatic1140 (Minneapolis)

Here is a close-up of the poor dear. So let see some pictures of some really early vacuums, how far back do you go and who has the oldest?

Oldest vacs

My oldest machine of all is a Regina Model A; my oldest electric machine is, I think, a Hoover 102. Or is it my Eureka Model 9? I am not sure of the exact dates of these. I'll get pics up eventually.

I'd show you my "oldest" vacuum but it's a 2006. The Kenmore was bought before the new Connie so it's defintely the older brother.

Post# 266-8/29/2006-18:18 ||| Convertible68 (Bellville, TX)

My 2 oldest

Hoover Special 105 and "Baby" 103. They both need a full restoration (the 103 runs well, but the 105 runs very slowly and needs some motor attention) so I'm a bit embarrassed to post them in their present state, but here they are...

Post# 342-8/31/2006-08:16 ||| Vintagehoover (Surrey, England)

My oldest...

...would be my Models 700 and 543, both from 1926. Both run like new! As you can see, the 543 still needs a bit of tidying up, but it's a drastic improvement from the state it arrived here in!

I'm still searching for a 541, and even a 105, although the chances of finding one in the UK is probably pretty slim!

Post# 358-8/31/2006-10:12 ||| Dysonman (park hills, missouri)

Kyle:
Just wondering why you believe your upright is a 1909 model?
The vacuum in picture is really a Royal Purifier, probably branded as an Electro Hygiene. You can tell by the metal piece with the holes in it, above the intake opening. That was for moth crystals (hence the name Purifier). All Royal-built uprights of that era had the knob for height adjustment in the very back, between the two wheels, like the one in your picture.

I notice your machine has a Westinghouse bag on it. I have a collection of cloth bags that Stan Kann gave me. If you'll tell me exactly what your machine says on the name plate, I'll see if I have the matching bag for you.

My oldest

Is this Hoover 450 that was a gift from Little Fred. Beautiful vacuum that works well and looks great.

Made from 1933 to 1935 and was the "budget" vacuum to the Hoover 800 which was the "deluxe".

Hi Kyle:
I brought my Royal collection to the convention this year, and one of the machines I brought was a 1933 Royal Purifier. It is identical to the one in your picture, except for the original bag on mine. I believe that somewhere I have another original black bag. You can have it as soon as I find it. Somewhere among the 340 machines in the store room. Does you cleaner's name badge say Electro Hygiene or Royal, or something else?

Charlie W.:
You are in luck. I do have a black Hoover replacement bag with the correct stitching pattern for your 450. But I distinctly remember you having a beautiful 541 that you brought to my house a few years ago. That would certainly be ten years older than the 450. Don't you still have it? By the way, I'm LOVING the Royal PowerCast from the meeting this year. It's so elegant and stylish. Just like a Singer R-1 (and just as heavy - but I don't care). It would be very difficult to find a modern cleaner that outcleans the PowerCast.

T.G.

Hoover 541

Tom Gasko,

Yes, I did have a mint 541! It took 3 541's to make it that way. One was a Canadian built and the other 2 from the US.

In a clean out, it went on ebay and Frank Morgan bought it. Wonder what ever happened to him? We used to see him at the conventions.

Anyway, I would love to acquire the bag for the 450. What do you have in mind? Email me if you would like to discuss further.

Glad you like the Powercast. Yes, they are monstrous but reasonably good performers. I played with the one Mike Rogers brought to Milwaukee several years ago when they had just debuted. It seems they were never embraced by the public and Royal ended up just about giving them away. Several club members have them and good them for great prices. It is far too new for me to buy!

Let me know about the bag and thanks!

Post# 635-9/5/2006-01:24 ||| Hygiene903 (Galion, OH)

Hey Tom,
Would you happen to have more than one original black Electro-Hygiene Bag? If so, I could certainly use one for my model 80, which is identical to the 230 except that it does not have a switch on the handle, only on the cord.
Also, did you notice the nozzle on Kyle's 230? Looks like it came from a different model, perhaps an earlier Royal? Any straight suction EH I've ever seen has a wider nozzle than that.
Also, do you have any information date-wise on the earlier Hygienes? I have both a model 80 and a model 94. The 94 needs work but I hope to finish restoring the 80 before I tear into the 94. The 94 has the hammered finish. Any info you might have would be appreciated.
Thanking you in advance,
Jeff

royal/electro hygiene/health-mor/crown vacuums

Jeff:
Royal did a LOT of private labeling starting in the mid 1920's. Kyle's machine appears to me (from the picture) to be a version of the Health-Mor (which Royal began to make in 1930). For the first two years (1928 - 1929) Health-Mor sold a private labeled Scott and Fetzer Sanitation System as the "Heath-Mor". Kyle's machine appears to have the Health-Mor type rug nozzle, as well as double back wheels. I didn't notice a swtich on the body of the cleaner in his picture (unlike a Health-Mor) and his cleaner does have the "purifier" moth crystal dispenser above the suction opening. It's definately an early 1930's Royal straight suction upright. I have one black Electro-Hygiene bag for my E.H. straight suction from 1928. The other Royal bags I have (the extras) are all black/red from late 1930's through 1950's. My Royal Purifier has its correct bag, as does my Royal Super and Royal Standard. I brought my 1910 Royal model 1 to the convention this year, together with my Standard, Super, Purifier, and Health-Mor. I did not bring my E.H. since it's the same cleaner as the Purifier.

To Charlie Watrous:
I'll be happy to give you the proper bag for your Hoover. Gratis. And with much love and affection. You are a wonderful person and a good friend, as well as being a total joy to be around. Remember your favorite phrase: "If you can't say something nice about someone...come sit here by me".
I love 'dishing' with you. Call me.

My oldest vacuum...

is a 1950s (I think) Kirby 515 with a replacement bag. If anyone has a 515 bag or similar to it, may I please trade for this practically brand new replacement bag? It is an old bag, but shows now signs of wear. The vac is in great shape, as the picture shows. I am curious... why do the bumpers not match? The vac works great, and is seemingly a great vacuum. Kirby rocks!

Your 505 has the bag from a model 62 and also the cord is from the model 62 as well but your headlight bumper is from a Dual 80

Post# 2241-10/8/2006-17:19 ||| vacuumkid3 (Alabama)

the vac...

On the bottom it says 515, not 505. The cord says "for Kirby 3CB." I have no clue what that means. I can see how it is from the Dual 80 [the headlight bumper]. Is there anyone who has a proper bag, cord, and bumpers for this vacuum? Thanks!

Post# 2242-10/8/2006-19:00 ||| converto-skip (Lafayette, Louisiana)

Hey Kyle the reason I said 505 is because that's the rug nozzle that on it is a 505. Boy You got one bazaar kirby it got bits and pieces from at least 3 or 4 different models

Here is my oldest Hoover vacuum cleaner...a "Special" model "N" from 1916. No this is not rebuilt, it is called a Special for its size. Larger than the "Baby" and smaller than the "Junior" or the "Senior" models, it was going to be the standard size Hoover in the near future. This model was replaced by the model 102 in 1919. I made the bag for it. It has lost its bumper and gained a new cord. The original push button switch works great. This is one very quiet machine.

The Kirby model 3CB was the Tradition (blue), but the cord you have is definately "Sirroco" or the tan color that started on the 562. The headlight bumper is from a D80.

1909 cleaners

Kyle:
The universal motor (as used on the machine in your picture) was not invented until 1910. The machine in your picture is, for sure, a Royal. It might be a private labeled Royal, but a Royal it definately is. And, it's a Royal Super (as opposed to a Royal Standard) made AFTER 1928, since the bag is on the right side (bags were on the left side until 1928). I'm not just making this stuff up, I can prove it to you if you wish, at the convention in Omaha next year, or the St. Louis Mini-Meet in December. In any event, I have an extra original black bag that fits your machine.

ease of restoration on older models

My favorite little junk shop has an old Cadillac, Hoover and Electro-Hygiene machines. I'm afraid to ask what he wants for them. Nothing has been restored on the machines. Are these difficult machines to restore? What am I getting into here?

Post# 3721-11/9/2006-13:38 ||| dysonman (park hills, missouri)

restoring old cleaners

BigBubba:
It's not difficult to restore old machines, as long as the motors are not frozen in position and the commutator is good. All my vintage cleaners started out as machines that were in someone's basement, or hanging in a vac shop. Of course, I fix cleaners for a living. If you get any, the Electro Hygiene will be the easiest to fix, next to the Hoover. The Cadillac might be trickier.
