Since there has been talk about using a filtrete bag on a Hoover convertible, (and there are none that I am aware of), I decided to get creative with my Hoover 728 and a Kirby filtrete bag.

First, I covered the opening that would go on the Kirby fill tube with several pieces of packing tape making sure to fold over just a bit on the cardboard collar so it would be secure.

Then, I cut the end of the bag off to make it open. I slid it carefully on the Hoover bag tube and had to wrap some of the filtrete material so the bag ring could hold it in place. You can see it in the pictures.

It seems that the air flow is improved and it works great. Now I can use a convertible and have a filtrete bag. The Kirby bag could be cut to fit a bit better but since it is on and working, I think I'll leave it as is.

When I put on the attachment converter, I was surprised by the amount of suction. Maybe the air flow is truly better after all. Of course, the bag was empty so the conditions were ideal. I'm going to use it for a while and see how it performs as the bag fills. As you will see, I am also using a "bojack" brushroll that is all wood and has 4 rows of brushes. It is great on berber.

The filtrete bag is placed inside the outer vinyl bag and the 728 is ready to start cleaning---almost dust free! Once again, modern technology makes an old vacuum work wonderfully. The 728 production was from 1971 to 1973 and was a "B Line" Deluxe model with full bumper, zipper bag, headlight and longer cord.

Charlie...great idea...just one question...how are you going to stuff the kirby bag into the vinyl jacket of the Convertible? I would like to see a picture of it being used with the bag intact. How well does the bag seal to the tube? It has to be better than the type C bag! I like the CWP brushroll too. I use them in my Convertibles and do they ever fluff the carpet nicely. Thanks for the pics.

In the last picture, the Kirby bag is inside the vinyl jacket of the 728. I'm not sure about your question as the Kirby bag is inside of the vinyl bag and it is inflated with the motor running.

From what I have seen, the bag seals to the tube very well as long as the bag ring is tight as can be seen in the picture.

Interestingly, ESSCO turned me onto the CWP brushroll and the low cost is wonderful as well as the GREAT performance. I then told Fred S., Jeff and a lot of other VCCC members about it and it seems to have caught on.

I'm so glad you tried this. I was vacuuming with my Kirby today with the filtrete bags and they do make such a huge difference in air flow. I too had read some of the posts about the how great a filtrete bag would be on a Hoover Convertable. So I thought well, why not? Use some tape over the opening of a Kirby bag and cut the bottom and fit it onto the fill tube of the Hoover. I was thinking about this and thought, "one day next week when I have some time I'm going to try that." And lo and behold I log onto the web site tonight and find that you did exactly what I was thinking of. Thanks Charlie for paving the way.

BTW...I would be interested to know how you would have trimmed the bag to fit the Convertable even better. You had mentioned that, but I wasn't sure what you were thinking because it looks like it fit pretty well exactly how you did it. And if you think about it, the G-6 outer bag is a lot smaller than the fully expanded Filtrete bag. But I'd be interested to know what you had envisioned about this.

That sounds like a neat idea-will try it in my Hoovers-May just have to get another 9-pack of kirby Filtrete bags!Also this would be interesting to try on a Hoover#28 that I have that uses a very wide opening discharge tube to feed a paper bag-the Hoover "HandiSacs"I only have one Handisac.Bet that cleaner has NEVER seen so much airflow until now!

Hi, this is what I've been doing since kirby Micron Magic bags have been introduced... These newer bags on hoover convertibles work fine, filter very well and do not restrict airflow in a considerable way. The best vacuum cleaner and one of the best filterbags ever made together;-)

Although our 60s bags are cloth and wider than the US vinyl ones so may be better for this one????

Should be better than standard filtration!- the airflow is DEFIANTLY improved :)

Is the bag pictured similar or the same as an Eureka type "F&G"I have used F&G bags in a Hoover convertible I have-Have to do a little folding-but they do work-and converts from Hoover"C" bottom fill to a Top fill bag-(F&G)without changing anything else.I have to fold over the very bottom of the bag so it fits inside the Hoover outer bag.

another thought for the Hoover using the Kirby Filtrete bag-You should be able to pick up so much more than the orginal "C" bag-probably 3-4 times more dirt!the Kirby bag may end up saving you money over the Hoover C bags.Say one Kirby Filtrete bag for 3 Hoover C bags.

These bags are actually for a Electrolux Sanitaire ZC880 so yup I would imagine they are the same :). I folded the top but either would work obviously! There is a definate improvement in suction with this and the capacity is greater as well :)
