Who is Jack Bailey?? and is "Queen for a Day" a national award or something??

Was a daytime television show during the fifties and perhaps the early sixties. Jack Bailey was the host. The theme was a group of ladies with terrible hard-luck stories would come on the show and tell their tales of woe (husband died and left her unemployed and broke with six kids, farm burned down, etc. etc.) At the end of the show, the audience applause would be measured and the lady who got the loudest applause, became "Queen for a Day" and would win fablous prizes which were supposed to ease the pain of their woeful existence. I am sure that the "losers" got some consolation prizes.

Anyway, besides new washers and dryers, and other things, Compact vacuums were one of the prizes given away. You will see another picture coming up in the week or so with a lady with the cape and crown and the Compact vacuum display set up for the show.

The polish-aire was a vacuum-driven floor polisher similar to the Electrolux power polisher, except the polish-aire had two spinning brushes instead of one. I will post a picture of one that I have when I get a chance.

"Queen For A Day" was an early television show, I don't recall
exactly when it began or ended airing, but I remember watching it in the mid to late fifties. The "Contestants"
were housewifey types down on their luck in a crisis of one
sort or another. The audience voted on who was the most deserving of being "Queen For A Day" and the Queen would
win a slew of fancy domestic labor saving devices. IIRC the winner was determined by how "high" the clap meter registered
for a contestant. Jack was the show MC/Host. Apparently,
the contestants had failed to "Mind the Gap" at some point in their lives. I suppose the "Ladies in waiting" , rec'd some
lovely consolation gifts.
