Hi all, might as well get the site started. Fred you and Robert have done a fantastic job setting this all up. How you have done all this in such a short time I will never know. Your introuduction Fred was great!! Now for my question. A good friend of mine, Chris in St.Louis sent me a Hoover convertible with the model 706 on it. I am wondering if anyone out there knows anything about it, ie. when it was made, color name, etc. Thanks for any help on this. It does have a replacement bag on it that reminds me of a Eureka bag, no printing on the bag at all. Terry

Terry...the 706 was a fairly rare cleaner as it was made for only a year. It was the promotional Hoover in that it was a hybrid...not a basic machine but not deluxe either...it was made for 1970 then replaced in 1971 by everybody's favorite the green green and more green 707. The 706 was persian gold with a seal griege hood and body/handle. The original bag was gold with snaps. It is also minus the handle grip, but you did get a headlight and a full bumper in the deal. These machines were priced to sell. They just were not around very long.

Terry,
Here is my 704-I think it is the same machine-same color- as your 706 but with only two position height adjustment. Next to it-the 66 I just found in Sun City.

Hi Roger, I am not sure, mine seems to be more of a creamy color base. Oh I do love that Green!! Terry

griege

QUESTION -- I have seen several references here to the color "griege" --- is that a special Hoover color, like Kirby's "Sirocco" ??? At first I thought someone was a butter-fingered typist and had misspelled the word gray! haha

Roger's Kirby

Gee Roger, that sure looks like a pretty Kirby behind the Hoover! Let's see some piccies of it! And what is the mystery attachment sitting just to the left of its nozzle? A canine-disturbulator?! hahaha

Post# 423-9/1/2006-12:47 ||| hoover1060 (Roselle, Illinois)

griege...

Charles, greige is 1/2 a color name that Hoover used starting in 1965. The proper name was seal griege, and they used the color in light, medium and dark.
The dark DARK brown on the middle 60's model 1120 DAM is the dark,
the pinky-biege base is light.
If I was not at work I'd post a picture.

A side note: In one of the archives I went through at Hoover I ran across a color sheet containing a paint square of each color from the 1969 line. Things such as marine blue, spring green, delft blue, victorian rose, all there and preserved.
How much I would love to take that to Home Depot and have paint mixed in those colors!!!

Paint matching...

Jeff

I presume youd get the colours scanned and the paint mixer could mix them??. The lower handle of my U4003 is pretty scratched and at some point im gonna take it to B&Q and get them to scan it and mix some enamel to repaint it. Apparently its 99% accurate :)

Seamus.

Maybe I should get some Seal Greige for the woodwork whilst im there lol!!!!

Charles,
The hiding Kirby is a model 560. My sister-in-law found this one for me. I could have grown tomatoes in all the dirt that covered the machine. I disassembled it and cleaned everything then sent it off to the local spa. It came back looking like this.
BTW..the things on the floor next to it are some of my "fur children's" toys

That is a really pretty Kirby - and Hoovers too, Roger!

Roger that 560 is a beauty!!!

That bag is pristine! Is it original to the machine? I have a 561 like that that needs some work. I won't send it back to Kirby since they will change the color scheme. I know Greg has a place in Omaha that gives them the spa treatment and may send it there. Love those old Kirbys. Here's my pride and joy, the 519 found new in the box. It was unfortunately stored in temperature extremes and the cord rotted, but I found some replacement parts. Here modeled with our own Ms. Tania. That bag still has the creases in it! You can see my factory-restored D80 and the can of Sweet-Aire in the background.

Roger...wow what a beautiful Kirby! That in my opinion was Kirby at its finest. If I had to choose a Kirby that would be it. I just love the shine. I am easily distracted by shiny things that light up!!!!! Oh...of course I really like the model 29 Hoover beside it. You have one in very good shape. I love the maroon and hammertone color combo on those. I want to redo my house with grey siding and maroon shutters just like the 29! How cool!

The color seal greige is just a combonation of grey and beige. It is a hard color to match. The next "generation" of Hoover Convertibles used a "taupe" color which is nothing more than the appliance epoxy spray paint in almond. The pinky beige is hard to match. The 706 was a much more bland machine and the next model 707 was ultra lively!

Beautiful 66 and 704 Roger! Thanks for posting them.

I am posting a pic of my 706.

Here is the height adjuster on the 706...the adjuster pad is seal greige and the handle release pad is gold. This particular machine was a rescue. I had to find an original bag. The machine itself was found in a vac shop on top of a pile of other cleaners. I cleaned and greased it and voila...it runs like new. This is a fairly rare cleaner made about one year 1970.

Fred,
Your 519 is stunning. What a beautiful machine.....and to find it new in the box. The 560 had a replacement cord when I got it but I had an original cord in my stash so I put that on it. The bag was original to the machine. I forgot to mention that it came with all the attachments and a can of Sweet-Aire as well.
Thanks Greg.
Tom-the red and grey Kirby's are my favorite too-probably why I love the Hoover 29 so much too--the color scheme. I have a couple 29's-the one in the pic is not the best one-the best one has the original bag on it! I have loved the model 29 since I first laid eyes on it.

Roger that 560 is just beautiful. I think that the "spa" really out did themselves this time.LOL Fred that 519 is just beautiful too. Tom, thanks for posting the picture of the 706. Now I know which bag to be on the look out for. I do think that was one of Hoover's most unusual color combinations. Terry

Ugh!

I HAD a 706 but thought it was ugly and parted it out! :( I think Victor has the carcass! Wah!

Roger, nice Convertibles! I noticed on your 704 the height adjuster/handle release pads are the newer type, but you mentioned that the machine was only a 2-position. Interesting because I thought those were only used on the later 4-position machines.

Post# 511-9/2/2006-19:09 ||| Rogera608s (Tucson,Az)

Thanks Austin.....the foot pads are the newer type. I noticed that too when I found the machine. Must have been at the time they were changing over is the only thing I can think of.
