Please note--the GE TT and in his other auctions--Magnavox speakers and amps-taken from VINTAGE "Maggie" Hi-Fi consoles. The GE TT came from a console. The seller is a "Magnavox Murderer!"He dressed up the "Maggie" amp so it would look nice not being in its "console"wish these folks would just sell the HI-FI WHOLE and not Butchered.Wouldn't it be nice to have the GE Console Hi-Fi that TT came from?

I agree with you Tolivac, since now I'm aware the man is a butcher. I saw the complete console, or one identical in our long gone General Electric dealer in Fort Pierce. I wonder if that one is still hiding in town? If I ever see one, it's mine. Crevicetool, don't forget to move the grand piano to the side. I still say though, it's one thing if you have a crapped out set that even a restorer wouldn't touch. It still makes me sick that hundreds of sets get gutted to make liquor cabinets for the trailer park set.

Gee-1939 GE Stereo!

Pretty good trick since home stereo hit the market in late '57. Maybe because this set has the Musaphonic logo next to the word stereo. Also annoying-when any old set is in a console, it is not always a stereo, like a lot of sellers say they are.

Not a GE, but one of the best Zeniths made

I got one of these from the original owner, purchased new in 1974 from Jetson's Home Appliances in Fort Pierce. They are still in business, and that is the owners real name. PS, mine was free.

Alan,

Was it Zenith who had the round speakers that were 360 degree thingies? I think those were Allegro too. Maybe. I can't remember. They were cylinder looking objects not unlike a tank vacuum cleaner on end with a cone shaped device on it that directed the sound. Ahh, the seventies.

Hi Crevicetool, Zenith Circle of Sound ran from about 1965 to the early '70s, with about three models of the cylindrical speakers. I have two sets with radio, two without, and the one radio set I found without speakers. There was a short plastic set, the tall set with the cone thing and woodgrained particleboard, and a deluxe set with a cone on the top, and one on the bottom. Magnavox made a square shaped copy in the early '70s. Allegro came out about '73, and ended up calling a line of remote controls, some radios, and other items Allegro too. Allegro speakers started great, and ended up garbage as time went on.

during the transition stage in the later 50's early 60's some "mono" Hi-fi systems were converted to stereo-the owner had a stereo cartridge added to the TT,Purchased a stereo amplifer-and another speaker system-usually in another cabinet. The orig speaker was then used as the other channel.sometimes these were well matched by a knowlegeable dealer and customer. To really tell if these "conversions" were truely Stero--Are there really two leads going from the cartridge to the amplifer(not just parelled.)and two speaker systems connected to the amplifer. With tubed ones was easy to tell by looking-are there two separate Push pull tube stages or a two single tubes-and with two output transformers. You need the tube stages and output transformer for each channel.
Zenith "Allegro" systems were the attempt by Zenith to get into the Component hi-fi market.some of their systems succeeded-others failed.I remember them from the 70's.Appliance stores in those days carried the Zenith "Allegro" hi-fi systems.

I think also a lot of people put a second mono amp or receiver and a second speaker when they could still get their hands on a mono unit. I need to fit stereo cartridges on my mono Magnavox console, so I can safely play stereo discs on it. That should be simple enough. I know it won't turn the set stereo, just keep from destroying the records. I also have a Stromberg Carlson hi-fi console that I just plugged a stereo Astatic needle/cartridge assembly into, and it seemed to work.
Considering what the original Allegro systems were, they were the cheap, plug in and play alternative to many expensive seperate components. I had a $15.00 thrift Allegro set that I gave to a friend because the speakers were the newer crappy Allegros. The new owner is not a hi-fi freak, and is just thrilled with it to this day. It's the same tuner and amp that I like, but in a particleboard cabinet and has 8 track.

yes, putting stereo cartridges in older mono hi-fi's will allow you to play stereo records safely.
In my business-radio stations-ran into the situations of AM radio stations with mono systems-since mono cartridges are NLA,have to use the stereo ones.Had to parallel the channles.Just make sure they are in phase. In AM stations now-they have stereo consoles and TT preamps-they just use the consoles L+R output to feed the transmitter. If the AM'er had a stereo gen for the transmitter-you would feed the stereo out from the console to the st gen,and the L+R to the main transmitter audio in.remember the failed "AM stereo"?Today with radio stations-some of the folks there would now ask--"Whats a record?"
I never tried an "Allegro"so I am not real famaliar with them.I just remember them as an attempt by Zenith to get into the component feild.Largely-Component hi-Fi buyers weren't interested. Also they were made in a period when consoles were becoming less popular-yet folks still wanted a plug and play system that could be more flexible in installation-they could put it on or in their furniture.

Here is an original Astro-Sonic component receiver

This is definetly not a hack job, this is a seldom seen early Magnavox component. I'm not sure my early '60s Maggie speakers would be adequate.

You Can Be Sure If It's Westinghouse

And this, because I don't want to lose track of it. I wish I could find the VM/Westinghouse changer in base for it. The one that was on eBay was $75.00, and it didn't even work! Cosmetically it was beautiful.

Oh, here it is!

$75.00 for a cosmetically perfect but non working unit is silly for me, but the odds of finding one around here are zero. Hmmmmm..........
