WHERE DO YOU WORK?

A couple weeks ago there was a really fun thread on AutomaticWasher.org where people posted photos from their offices or places of work. Let's do that here! I'll start with mine--

First is my office at home. Cluttered but comfortable! I have both a Mac and a PC, and a very clever switching device I found that allows me to share one set of keyboard, mouse and monitors for both systems. (The Mac displays across two screens -- very useful for graphics work to have tools, folders etc. on the right screen and the work area on the left.)

Note my old phone and fan - both of which work of course! - and Royal typewriter. In the lower-left corner you can see just a portion of my "sweeper miniatures" display.

Then this is BUCKLEBEAR central -- my main graphics client for the past 10 years or so. I do both print graphic and website design.

BUCKLEBEAR is a cartoon character who teaches safety concepts to preschool children. That's him sitting in my chair! The company is owned by two "little old grandmas" who started it up back in the 1970s.

See the web site for info if you're interested. There's lots of fun stuff to do and see there, inclduding some games and stuff!

Then last but not least my office at church, up in the organ loft, where the hub of activity is the wonderful 1957 Casavant pipe organ.

Well I consider myself extremely fortunate, I retired a year ago this past January at age 49 after 30+ years on the railroad and that was enough. I probably would have stayed longer but it wasn't fun anymore during the last 5 or so years. A lot of senior railroad employees were/are of retirement age and leaving en masse 10 years ahead of the industrial national average for and in both the US and Canada and sadly many, not all, of the new hires etc seem to have this self-absorbed attitude where they think they know everything.

Here is the building I began in. This photo was taken in the 1930's but it didn't look any different when I worked there beginning inthe 70's.

It was torn down in the 80's to make way for Expo 86 and a hotel was put up.

Charles Richard...

Thanks for sharing. I'm amazed at that home office. I guess I'm claustrophobic. I need to be near a window and lots of natural light. It would be a little too tight for my comfort; although I applaud you on your creative use of space. Living in San Francisco has really taught me to appreciate the efficient use of space.

BTW, I love your desk in the second photo. It looks very Eames-esque or Danish modern. Let me know if you ever come across another one like it for sale.

A colleague of mine uses a living room closet as her office. It's actually very cool. She has a gorgeous home here in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, with a huge loft style living room. When she's ready to work, she just opens two, wide closet doors and voila, instant office. When she's done working for the day, all she has to do is close the doors and it's out of site.

Here's my workspace. I've been in the process of streamlining my desktop, eliminating wires and peripherals as much as possible.

Mike,

Can I send my staff to you for training...I think they are finally getting it... I walk behind them all the time and put things away.. I can't stand clutter, does not give the members of our credit union a feel of professionalism when they walk in and see things laying everywhere...

I would love to post pictures of my office and place of employment, but due to the nature of the business I can't for security reasons. We have cleaned up a lot since I started three years ago. Cords are still a nightmare for me... but sometimes you have to go with what you have. We also don't have any windows as we are located in a Wal-Mart. Dust is another huge problem for us... we could actually dust twice a day and never be ahead of the game.

I am playing for a funeral tomorrow and I plan on taking a dust rag with me LOL... bulbs for the organ lamp...Oh my how things have changed since I left 10 years ago...still trying to figure out where the soloist will stand.

Morgan

hi

Would you be able to post a picture of the miniatures? I would enjoy seeing them if you would be so kind.

Well, let's see...my main area of computer-related stuff can be taken all throughout the house, as I have a refurbished Dell Inspiron E1505. Works good enough for me!

But when it comes to repair work and such, THAT happens in my playroom. That's also where the majority of my collections (yes, collections) lie. I have my cameras, fans, vacuums, fountain pens, and so on all in the playroom. My workbench lies in a corner next to my bookcase. Here are some pictures!

And more...I made my own pegboard to hold my tools (and a Polish-Aire!). All of my polishes, oils, greases, and etc. are below the pegboard. Anyways...

Oh, and there are the vacuums across the room. Along with my homemade hose storage solution.

And in one of the other pictures, you can see two blue containers. Those hold my attachments. A big clear wrapping paper holder houses my extension wands.

Okay, that's all I have for now!

This is fun. It's interesting to get to know people on a deeper level.

btw my office may appear "cramped and windowless" but if you could see the bigger picture you'd realize that's not the case. The office "area" is just a corner of a much larger room -- the remaining part is taken up with floor-to-ceiling book cases along two walls, and then, at the far corner of the room, my vacuum cleaner display area.

Andrew, I couldn't live like that I'd be forever bumping into things and the one I live with LOL It's a beaut no doubt about it.

Fred, how do you stand the excitement everyday crunching those numbers. It's a good thing you have this website to come home to for relaxation purposes.

no pic as of yet

I'll try and get a pic in the near future. But my office is a 2005 Peterbuilt 379. Semi truck. I'm based out of Tucson, AZ but travel all across the country.
