Jeff and I found a "surprise" today..... after getting a new tire for my mini cooper and then going to lunch, i took an alternate route home to avoid the MALL traffic. Jeff spotted a good will store (i've lived here for 13 years and didn't know it was there) so we went in..... for a whole $7.53 this is what we walked away with.

Congratulations, Michael!

That's one nice 28, and the original bag is frosting on the cake! It's not very often that you find a 28 with the original bag.

Congrats Michael...

I see you've definitely been bitten by the vacuum and "thrifting" bug.

We still need to talk one of these days. Hope you and Jeff are doing well.

Incredible!

You guys are surprised to find this at the Goodwill? You gotta be kidding! Think for a moment about the responses we have seen from some of our members about what they tell someone who inquires about the value of a machine. Or maybe the owner just visited this site for awhile, saw the value sandbagging and concluded there was no way of getting a straight answer. So she/he said, "Well, that's wierd. I thought those guys would have some idea of what it is worth. I'm just going to drop it at the Goodwill - who needs the bother."

Don't you get it? Members of your own club are sending these machines to the Goodwill, and worse yet, to the dumpster. You need a management change that can figure out a better way to communicate with the public. The way your system works now, a couple of members are positioned to skim off the cream and send what they don't want to the dumpster. This is an important discussion. This is a discussion your members should be permitted to have.

A civilian looking around in here would soon learn that the only way they get a fighting chance at a fair price for their machine is eBay. What is learned on this site leaves a civilian with three choices, eBay, Goodwill, dumpster. And the attitude of this club toward the discussion of value probaby sends the finest machines to those three places in about equal ratios.

But, that's just my opinion.

rocket...................this was NOT a discussion about what its worth. just sharing the find is all. and again "worth" is whatever a person is willing to pay for it.

Let's not soil yet another thread, guys, please.

The majority of us here are Vacuum Collectors, in that we like to find, admire, restore and use older vacuum cleaners. Their value to us lies in their beauty of form and function as originally intended and engineered.

A minority here like to find older vacuums and subject them to bandsaws, grinders and torches to evolve them to a higher artistic form that is also much appreciated by some. The value of the vacuum in its original state is clearly not a consideration to this minority.

These two groups of enthusiastic Forum participants are unlikely to see eye to eye on many core issues - as has been amply demonstrated to the consternation of the the Club at large as we bear must witness to the excruciating and pointless one sided needling exchanges until what began as a generally interesting thread simply dies off from exhaustion.

This is called hijacking and clearly is not appreciatied by the membership. To those who delight in bullying or belittling, how much fun to you think you are to live with? Please go piss in someone else's sandbox.

Dave, having a lovely time, now in Winnipeg exploring the limits of Subaru AWD on ice coated streets. Now that's FUN!

Oops, my bad.

You confused me. I read the topic title "People just don’t know what they are getting rid of…" and then I read what I thought was some glee that the purchase price was $7.53. So I thought it was about the notion that someone might have abandoned something of value. You sucked me in by talking price. Some people are curious about what the price should have been. Anyway, sorry.

I just can't seem to get the nuances of the rules here. I apologize for hijacking your thread and shall, when I organize my thoughts, start my very own thread on the subject.

Again, sorry to suggest these things might have some value. Have a nice day.

Just one more, than I will stay away

Dave, in taking your cheap shot, you forgot a category. You indicated there were people who were only interested in some lofty esoteric value and there were butchers who somehow can't appreciate your purity. There is a third category, and I know a lot of these people: People who 1) like the lofty esoteric value of the machines, their form and function, 2) like the vacuums that have been rescued from the dumpster and turned into assemblage art by people like Jimmy Descant and myself, and 3)like to buy and sell old vacuum cleaners and are interested in what a machine might bring. It is the person that likes all three of these things that you are dissing.

I just can't seem to get the nuances of the rules here

you just can't seem to get A LOT of things........you are always trying to start something......QUIT being so weird and just go with the flow!!!!!

Post# 26499-12/9/2007-17:41 ||| Rocketwarrior (Omaha)

Go with the flow..

Okay, good idea. Here goes, more favorite things:
I like the sound my snowblower makes as it is shutting down
I like that eerie quiet after it stopped
I like my wife's snoring (from a distance)
I like cutting cockpits in old canister vacuum cleaners
I like some of the Pope's outfits
I like my office gal friday's laugh
I like California Kitchen Thai Pizza

How am I doing? Love ya. Gotta go, Fred wants to talk to me.

Michael...

Great find. I really like that you found it for under $8. I can't wait to see the after photos. Let me know what you need for it as I have lots of parts that I would be happy to share rather than put it on ebay. The model 28 is a wonderful design and looks best when it is switched on and the huge bag inflates. It looks like you even have the original headlight lens...truly a rare item!

To me it is more about sharing with club members and not the monetary value of something. I think sharing some of our ideas with fellow club members should be done through private email or phone conversations so that these threads do not get out of hand.

Since this one was inexpensive, you can splurge on its restoration.

Way to go Michael!

Yes, Christmas came early

and to think we found that while trying to AVOID traffic around the Louis Joliet Mall!

The Goodwill store was jumping too, and there sat the poor model 28, surrounded by very recent plastique machines. For $7 it was a treasure to be had!
Now to keep that store on the radar and check in there now and again. Who knows what will be rescued next!

good find

I see a lot of 28's out my way + convertibles. I think that I have over 13 model 28's. I lost track.
