Kyle in the Ann Arbor News...................

Kyle,

I just saw your picture and 1/4 page story this evening in the Ann Arbor News. They did a rather good job, and spoke about your experience on the Megan Mullally Show. You collection is over 100+...that's fantastic.

Maybe if situations permit, you could drop into my store sometime and see the "oldies" I have up on the wall. I usually rotate them from time to time. And not that your far away. I'm just up in Scio Township on Jackson Rd.

Good luck on your TV debut, and maybe we can meet sometime at my store. I would love to have you pitch one of my Simplicity's that I carry...as you know it's a Riccar in drag...LMAO

Good for you!!!

Adrian boy swept up in enthusiasm for vacuums
Collection of cleaning machines earns him visit to TV talk show

OK, some might say 11-year-old Kyle Krichbaum's hobby sucks - but it's getting him on TV, so eat your hearts out, stamp collectors. Kyle, a sixth-grader from Adrian, collects vacuum cleaners. He has about 100 of them stored in his parents' basement and a shed out back, and at last count there were 27 vacuums in his bedroom.

Kyle's been invited to appear on NBC's "Megan Mullally Show,'' a new variety show hosted by Mullally, the actress who played Karen Walker on the series "Will & Grace.'' Kyle and his parents fly out Monday to tape the show, which is scheduled to air on WDIV at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Kyle's mom, MaryLynn, says he's been fascinated by vacuums for as long as he's been old enough to know what they are. At a year old, he was trying to push the vacuum, and he got his first real vacuum when he was 3.

He likes to hang around vacuum shops, talks vaccums like a pro and will happily tell you why your next one should be a Riccar ("It'll last a lifetime, and they're super easy to push,'' he says. "It'll be the last vacuum you ever buy.''). Not long ago, the owners of one of Kyle's favorite vac shops let him run the cash register and sell a few vacuums.

"I want to have a vac shop (when I get older),'' Kyle says. "But I also want to be an inventor and invent something quiet.''

Kyle's parents figured four or five years ago that Kyle's passion for vacuums would start to fade soon. Instead it has gotten more intense. In the summer he'll vacuum the house several times a day, trying out different models.

"Every time he gets a new vacuum it's his ultimate dream vacuum,'' MaryLynn Krichbaum says, "And then he gets on eBay and he's found another ultimate dream vacuum.''

The Taping

I just got back from the taping of Kyle's appearance on the Megan Mullally show which airs tomorrow (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. on NBC.

Not only will his presentation make you chuckle mightily, if you watch the audience you will probably see a glimpse of someone else whom you know and love dearly! (moi!!)

(Note, while I am pretty sure the show airs the same time all over the country, you may want to "check your local listings."

It's not carried on our NBC affiliate, rather our ABC affiliate--at 11 AM.

I had a lot of fun with Kyle and his folks yesterday. I went to the TV taping and met them afterward on the studio lot; then they went to get some lunch and recover from the taping.

Appearing on a TV show certainly is a high-octane experience, to the extent of being absolutely surreal. It's like stepping through Alice in Wonderland's mirror into another -- very strange, bizarre and alien -- dimension.

Even watching a TV show being taped is a high-octane experience! I left there yesterday realizing anew how phony it all really is! The audience doesn't clap and cheer and leap to their feet because they adore the host -- they do so because a hyperactive, over-caffeinated "audience fluffer" directs them to. And it's no accident that PILES of candy bars are set out for the audience in the waiting areas, and when you come inside there is candy on every chair. Watching people stuff their faces (and pockets, in some pathetic cases) was kinda funny because I knew they were getting all pumped up on a sugar high. (I'm quite proud to say I resisted the temptation!)

Attending the taping was not a particularly FUN thing. It actually was quite exhausting, and afterward I had a sore throat from all the yelling and cheering. I wouldn't drop everything to go do another one! This show was fun because of Kyle, but really, being an audience member is a lot of work and it's very hard to keep up the kind of energy level they expect from you.

Later on in the afternoon I picked them up at their hotel and brought them over to my place for the Grand Tour. I think I can say that Kyle had a lot of fun here, and he saw a few vacuum cleaners he had never seen before. I just wish I had a bigger place, with more square footage of vacuumable flooring, and with a better way to display my collection. But he did spend a couple hours looking and playing, and in a couple of instances salivating! (He seemed quite enchanted with my toy Hoover Junior that another Kyle gave me!) Then I took them to the Grove, a really nice shopping center near my place and next to the historic Farmers Market so they could do some souvenir shopping before they left.

His parents are GREAT -- very, very nice people. (His mom is a dental hygienist and his dad is a worker's comp claims adjuster for a large corporation.) I was talking to his mother in a t-shirt shop while Kyle and his dad went to go to the rest room. I got a little bit choked up when I told her what great parents I think they are to allow their son to explore this part of his personality, to really even encourage it. I told her I wondered how differently I may have turned out if my parents had been even a little more encouraging than they were, instead of it being such a completely negative thing my entire life. (Even to this day -- they do "indulge me" I suppose, but if I start talking a little too much about "sweepers" I can sense them tensing up and starting to shut down, you know.)

It really was a lot of fun having him here and I told his folks I hope they will come out again when they can really spend some time doing all the "touristy" stuff. I do love playing "Hollywood Tour Guide" for out of towners. There really is a lot of fun and exciting stuff to do and see out here!

Here, and following, are a few photos I took of them.

Great pics Kyle! I know that you had a great time. I am sure that you were impressed with Charlie's collection. It is wonderful that you and your family were able to do this together! I agree with Charlie that your parents are wonderful to let you express yourself this way. It seems to be only a positive experience for you. Now...you have to get on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno!!!!!

Kyle...you the man!!!

So,

After watching youtube here It's a safe assumption that Ken Tacony will be seeing this. As you should know Ken is the president of Tacony's who make your favorite vacuum the Brilliance that Megan gave you.

You should take a bow sir, every customer I had yesterday mentioned you. You're a Washtenaw County Celebrity for sure!!!!!! And just so you know, I sold two of the Simplicity Synchrony's just off your reccomendation. Being that their a Brilliance in drag...LOL

It pleases me that finally a person with your enthusiasm get's the hobby into the limelight, and furthermore makes all of us pleased that our hobby from the "closet" isn't so strange and unnatural anymore. I wish I had you're guts when I was your age for sure...

EXCELLENT job Kyle. I see you as a excellent salesman, and repair person in the future. And also...you're welcome at my store anytime you wish to visit.

And he will be....

Kyle,

I just sent a personal message to Ken Tacony and John Kaido of Tacony's sending them the youtube clip of your apperance on the Megan Mullally show.

I felt that anyone who would be good enough to give their company a boost should get credit, if any is due them. I also sent it to my roadman as well. I know that you just recieve the Brilliance from Ms Mullally, but maybe they will still do something special for you.

Im am unsure honestly,if there will be anything coming of it, but I just spoke to John a few days ago about a problem...and I mentioned you. He's heard about you but had not yet seen the video.

Guess who will when he hits his computer tommorow morning? Both Mr. Kaido AND Mr. Tacony.

You deerve recognition by them. I joked with John about you being their "future national sales manager".

Again Kyle, thanks for being such an inspiration, and putting product on the map, while informing the television populace with the intricasies of our hobby.

On Air-Way and Hoover

Kyle,

Per our conversation this afternoon at the store, I will be going to Lansing this weekend to get that Air-Way Sanitary System for you. It is the model with the avacado green brocade bag with the dark green or blue? airplanes on it.

As a sidenote, the upper cord hook has broken off, and I have never been able to find a suitable or correct replacement. Also, the switch knob is cracked, and as I've told you just leave it on and unplug it and re-plug it when you want to turn it on or off. Also the thin celluloid dome over the fan opening that says "Air-Way Sanitary System" in script has a few cracks but is there and serviceable! And of course I replaced the old fabric cord...that is just an unfortunate must with an electric item that old.

Also as I mentioned, I will have to find the tools for the Hoover model 28. I have not seen them in awhile but im fairly sure that they are up there as well. The 28 has a replacement bag, but the rest of it is original. The base has a few chip marks, but again from 20 paces it looks good...and it all works.

I may have a few more goodies for you to choose from, as I am thinning down some of my stash. As I mentioned to you, they are either extra's, or ones that I have multiples of, the ones that have come from my vac freinds are staying around..

Im really glad that we were able to have our conversation. I really would love to see that Hoover Model O someday too ....possibly after you've had time to restore it!!!

Anyway, call again when you have the time and we will set up a day possibly next week for you to come and see and possibly if you want them take home the Hoover and the Air-Way!

I'll leave that up to you...

FYI

Kyle,

I am open from 9 am to 6 pm Monday thru Friday, and 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday.

So Monday is a go if it's workable with your mom. I will be leaving for Lansing in about a half an hour so I can get that Air-Way for you.

I checked up on the attachments for the Hoover, and unfortunatly...I can't find them. I have no Idea where they are. I will check at another place where I keep some of my stuff...but I'm guessing in one of my moves recently...they were possibly displaced, and dissappeared.

Unfortunatly, with moving recently; it's one of the crap things that happens when you have too many people help...or just not know where things go...or pay attention well.

The Hoover 28 is still your if you would like it tho.

On display at my store is my Apex A-3 the Apex 503 the Hoover 725, and 28 , the Kirby 505 and the Electrolux XXX.

Will look forward to your call.
